I remember being disappointed by F1 onboard sounds, after playing a game where F1 car sounded very good I wonder if that's because microphones couldn't handle the sound of extremely loud engines, thus giving us this weird sound

It could also be the vibrations from the engine that tamper with the sound as well. That’s why you hear lower sounds in the onboards.

Yes, with their 2.4 L V8 in 2006. I believe Cosworth also reached 20,000+ rpm, but I'm not sure exactly how much...

The teams could've reached higher rpm's but the FIA imposed regs to limit them to 19k. As you said no car ever got above 20,500👍

I may have a faulty memory when it comes to this, but I'm like 99 % certain that McLaren back in like 2004 or so when their engines where blowing up and Raikkonen was driving for them, did ca 22500 rpm's. And that's also why their engines didn't last the race distance. This was an attempt to catch up with the extremely dominant Ferrari back in those days, because they didn't have anything else that could close the gap at the time, so they took a chance. Now this was before the first rev limit was imposed by FIA, which was 20500 rpm, right? Which the year after became 20000 or 19500 rpm I think. And then finally 19000 rpm. But I don't remember exactly how that went. The problem is that even though there's obviously quite a bit of footage from those years, I haven't been able to find any showing the rev count on screen. And there definitely were, otherwise I wouldn't have known about it in the first place. And I distinctly remember that one of the two Swedish commentators pointed it out.

They probably do, it's just the MGU-H that's muffling the sound. They rev to 15,000 RPM. Any engine over 10,000 RPM sounds super-high pitched and "screamy".

Anyway, the sound is still kinda screamy and loud af, I was at Interlagos last year watching the F1 GP and the sound is brutal, Honda engine has the best sound, the feeling is that the exhaust was inside my head when cars passed on the main straight, I could feel the body vibrating

It honestly amazes me just how strong those pistons and bearings are in the engine to be able to smoothly handle 20k+ RPM and still deliver power. The engineering skill to achieve that is almost magical.

There would be different combinations of exhaust gas patterns in the higher revs, so speeding up the video does nothing.

McLaren did 22500 rpm the year before FIA limited the revs. And that was to 20500 the first time they did it, so no, everyone did higher than 19000 rpm's, which later, and for quite a few years became the rpm ceiling in F1.

@@Superknullisch exactly.. there was TWO limits!!! and so first LIMIT to go LOWER rps... at F1. And the most recent again LIMIT to lower 19,000 - ... so... you are so right. ALOT of the F1 cars did over 20K. 22500 sounds right for one of highest before the first ban! wow thats roughly 22K-23K. i loved the older F1 v10-v12 even v8 :D

@@jaynee8581 no disrespect, but on a dyno i can make anything rev till it goes poof. so for me it needs to be during at least qualifying to be "official". the Big shame is that the bmw p85 never raced. that was reportedly capable of 19.8 in race trim. the v8 did go over 20k in 2006, most noteably the cosworth. shame that the rev race stopped in late 06 :(
