As a Norwegian living in Iceland, I think a union of all Nordic countries would make much more sense. The Nordic Passport Union has secured open borders and free movement between the countries for citizens of any of the Nordic countries from the 1950s. However, crime has lately resulted in more border checks.

Swede here! Two points: 1. Stockholm (probably) wouldn't be a contender for capital. Gothenburg would be our contribution, because of its location. 2. Our languages are mostly mutually intelligible, but not perfectly, and arguably not enough. We'd have to merge them a bit, but the logical choice would be norwegian, not swedish. Norwegian seems to be most in the middle, it's the easiest language for both swedes and danes to understand. Especially if we consider a sort of nordic union in whole. (EDIT 2: I asked on the danish subreddit and out of maybe 15 replies, the majority said that swedish was the easiest.. hardly scientific but still. I think the determining factor is which language is the easiest to merge to. Norwegian has the international perk of being the easiest for english speakers to learn, I've heard, but that's secondary.) You can't simply use the metric "most populous" or "largest land area" or something like that. Otherwise, I'm all for a union! I meet a lot of danish and norwegian customers, and most insist on atleast trying to speak their own language as far as possible. It warms my heart. But some are just not intelligible. Norwegians often adapt to swedish, they sort of dumb it down for us. Danes from anywhere but Copenhagen are actually quite hard, and I'd say I'm more linguistically capable than the average swede. EDIT: Although Gothenburg would probably be our contribution, Copenhagen is another good option. Gothenburg is the largest port in Scandinavia. But Copenhagen sits at a strategic strait, and is closer to Sweden. Gothenburg is however connected to the scandinavian mainland, while Copenhagen is not.

@@jonathanlindqvist2608 as a Norwegian, I agree to all your points
@TheDandelionViking
@TheDandelionViking Ай бұрын
As a different Norwegian, I agree fully with the first point but only largely with the second. In Norway, we have two official languages, bokmål (book speach, the "correct" language as it was written in the books imported from Denmark when we were in a union from 1380-1814) and nynorsk (new Norwegian, based on dialects from around the country deemed to have little influence from Danish). We have to learn both of them, and any and all official documentation you receive HAS to be written in your preferred language of the two. That also means you can refuse any ticket issued by the police or court until you get it the correct written form. You do have to inform of the mistake yourself, though. There's also Sami, and while we do have to learn some of it it is not an official Norwegian language. I think we would end up with a system of several different languages where you'd have to learn enough to be proficient, but primarily use one. Additionally I think the languages would continue to evolve more or less as they have, closer and further apart.

@@jonathanthomsen3111 I'm open for it! Any particular reason why you think so? It is on continental Europe, so that's a plus. But it's also not on the mainland of Scandinavia, so that's a minus. Copenhagen is a large natural harbour, but it's smaller than Göteborg - sorry, I mean Gøteborg, so that's a plus for Gothenburg. But Køpenhamn is connected to the Baltic, so that's a plus. But perhaps most importantly, danish is the hardest language for most scandinavians to understand. I don't know what that means practically though. (Btw, are you danish? May I then ask which of the other two languages you and perhaps most danes find easiest to understand when spoken? You have a sexy first name btw)

@jimbøb-i9q But it was united under the Danish queen Margrethe the first , but at her death her husband Erik of Pommern became the ruler, and he sort of treated the Swedes unfairly. He made war to the south with the German states in which Swedish soldiers had to participate and there was nothing gained in it for the Swedish noblemen. Eric also put Danish people into the powerful positions in Sweden. The Swedes ended up rebelling and the king at the time Christian the second, killed them all in the "Bloodbath of Stockholm" 82 nobels and rebels war decapitated or hanged. Well that didn't have the unifying effect that the stupid king thought it would have, it just sparked a much larger rebellion, and the Kalmar Union ended. I'm from Denmark, and my country has had its share of stupid kings. Never give any one man absolute power. Not then and not now. Power corrupts. Sweed here; We were united once , and in some ways we never really split apart really. We're still very close, like to me going to Norway or Denmark isn't leaving the country for me, still feels like I'm on home turf. Also the capital could be Gothenburg it's like the perfect middle point, plus traveling to Sweden on the ocean, Gothenburg would be the place you arrive to at first. To get to Stockholm you'd have to either go around the southern point or go through the river both takes a lot of time. If we wanna be technical only Norway and Sweden are the Scandinavian countries, because the scandinavian mountain chain stretches along the border between Norway and Sweden. Denmark is connected with a bridge, Finland up top but its not scandinavian. However I'd still plop in Finland cause we're all connected; Norway Sweden and Finland are fused together and Denmark clamped on with a bridge so we're all united really :) would feel odd leaving Finland out when its attached to us

Sounds to me that you really just want to create a Greater Sweden than a Scandinavian union. Gothenburg is not even in the middle, that would rather be Trondheim or Bodø. And what is your point with the statement that Denmark is not really Scandinavian? You don't receive anything else than upsetting a lot of peole, but it might ofc be a point for a swede in itself. Also it's abit hypocritical to hear from a swede since it's only thanks to swedish imperialism that Denmark is no longer physically on the Scandinavian peninsula which we were for a thousand years prior to that. Also a Scandinavian union should be focused on culture and Denmark frankly has a lot more Scandinavian culture than Sweden which has lost its nordic roots thanks to mass immigration over the last 50 years or so. Why do you want finland in? Again this is from a very swedocentric pov as finland plays a big role in the swedish empire. But finland is not ethnically a Nordic country. It's a country founded by central asian nomadic tribes, just like Estonia and Hungary. If Finland should be let in, then Iceland, Greenland and Faroe Islands should also. Especially the latter two since they are still a part of the kingdom of Denmark.

I'm surprised by this obsession of some people to weld the Scandinavian countries (some are obsessed with the Nordic countries, which would include Finland and Iceland) to become a single, unified country. The Nordics already ARE working together to the extent that they can be considered as one country by outsiders. Trying to force them to become a single country would be like trying to force grown-up siblings, that have been living independently for a long time, to revert back to living under the same roof! Not conductive to a peaceful existence - is this Putin's idea, a way to sow discord among siblings?

AS a Swede.. All emotions put aside a Scandinavian union won´t make sense without the rest of the Nordics(Finland, Iceland etc..) With those additions we would have a union of about 30 million people, The only feasible capital should be Copenhagen. It´s geographical location in combination with communication makes it most suitable. Sorry, but Stockholm has to play the second role here. Gothenburg is out of the question. It hasn´t the facilities needed for a capital regarding diplomatic quarters, Embassies etc and it would crazy to built that in Gothenburg when we have cities with those facilities already in place. Main language is of course Norwegian. It´s the only Nordic language all countries can cope with, even Swedish speaking Finns, so it´s the easiest to adapt for coming generations. The flag should be the Kalmar union flag with a blue cross in the middle of the red one. It connects to our historical inheritage as well as every country is represented colourwise. We should have the Nordic "krona" as currency and put all our military forces in a joint army. This would create a federation that would be extremly strong financial, have a strong military defensce, a devoleped welfare system and be a major political power to be considered globally. But since this is a great idea and logical step for us preserving the fortunes and welfare of our countries, it will unfortunally never happen. This due to petty nationalism and stupid people who instead of cooperation chooses conflict instead. But it´s a nice dream..

@@haga2519 Not a separate tectonic plate, though it is sometimes referred to as the Fennoscandian shield, it is still a part of the Eurasian plate. though reading up on it rather than going off memory, the Fennoscandian peninsula consists of many smaller regions in which there is typically split into Karelia, Finland, Kola peninsula and the Scandinavian peninsula So I was wrong in my original comment as there can be confusion as Denmark is clearly not a part of the Scandinavian peninsula, but it is still culturally defined as Scandinavian Personally i use Scandinavian and Nordic interchangeably so on your last point I agree (though i feel it was tangential to the topic)
