@aquss333 күн бұрын

@GoldenJayTime3 күн бұрын
as an australian, compulsory voting is good, actually. it means politicians have to cater more towards the moderates, which prevents like, full blown fascists because you can't just rely on your group voting and no one else voting. Our voting day is a Saturday, and you can vote in person at like most community centres (schools, churches, some like, dance centres or whatever) around the area. they run bake sales and sausage sizzles to help fundraise for their community, and voters walk away with a (overpriced, but delightful) "democracy sausage". Plus, compulsory voting just means you have to show up and get your name marked off. if you truthfully dont care, you can just donkey vote and walk away. its not like they make sure you write something. growing up, i was baffled to discover that not all countries have compulsory voting, and even more baffled when i realised that most of them dont.

The election of 1860 is one of the most interesting elections because it was essentially two elections in one. Former Illinois US Representative Abraham Lincoln and Illinois Senator Stephen Douglas in the north and former Tennessee Senator John Bell and incumbent vice president John C Breckinridge in the south. Abraham Lincoln the only anti-slavery candidate. Stephen Douglas being the candidate known for supporting popular sovereignty aka letting people in newly admitted states to have slavery or not. John Bell whose entire new party basically said they'd keep everything the same and finally John C Breckinridge whose party was for secession although to my knowledge Breckinridge wasn't.

1:16 Voting maps like this are always extremely misrepresentative and very bad for demonstration. Land doesn't vote, people do. Voting maps where they're all like "see, only these few tiny areas voted for this, so they must be a very tiny fraction of the population and thus don't deserve to have their voices heard or their wants met" is a long-standing conservative method of misleading the uninformed into believing their lies. (also notice how that post says _"only_ 56%" despite that being _well_ over the majority mark of 50%) People see "red big, blue/green small" and associate that with tyranny of the minority, disregarding that those tiny areas are so much more _densely_ populated. How densely populated are and how many people live in the huge sectors of Sweden to the north-west, compared to the primary cities that are in green? The _ONLY_ thing that matters in voting is pure population numbers and vote counts. NEVER maps like this.

Hey Jack! The mass of the same object doesn't change depending on where you are. What changes though, is its weight (the force of attraction to the center of the planet). On Earth, to calculate an object's weight in Newtons (N), you'll need to multiply the g constant (roughly equal to 9.81 m/s^2, which "happens to be" the acceleration of objects when they are falling) by the mass of the object (in kilos). The g constant on Earth is different than the one on Mars, for instance, as it is calculated with the mass of the planet and the distance of the object to it (g=(Mass of the planet * Mass of the object * G (gravitational constant))/(distance between the center of the planet and the object ^2), to be precise). As Earth isn't a perfect sphere, due to its spin that causes it to be slightly compressed in the equator, the weight of objects with the same mass in its surface can (very slightly) vary depending on their latitude (how north or south). But that map was just bullshit 😅🤣

First photo taken from space was in 1946 by a suborbital rocket flight, and first satellite wasn't launched until 1957, almost 20 years after that picture. That is most likely taken from a high altitude balloon.

The standard printer paper in the USA (and its neighbours) is "US letter", officially designated "ANSI A". US Letter and a bunch of other inch-based sizes for paper are standardised by the American National Standards Institute and the American Society of Mechanical Engineers in standards document Y14.1-2020. US letter is 8½" × 11", just a little bit wider and shorter than A4 (which is 210mm × 297 mm).
