In this video, I go into detail on one of the biggest questions that people have asked themselves about the new Jurassic World movies. What Would Michael Crichton Think Of Jurassic World? I cover this topic in full by referencing not only The Lost World and Jurassic Park by Michael Crichton, but also his work on Westworld, the meta commentary in his novels and even the history of the original book and how the story of Jurassic Park was initially shaped. I hope you all enjoy this one. We'll be getting a Jurassic World Novel soon, so I think its time we dived back into Crichton before the new material :)

Today I had a argument with the biology teacher, because he was saying Steven Spielberg was a dumbass making Jurassic Park in a scientifically wrong way. I told him that the mvoies and also the books explains why the dinosaurs in the stories are far different from the real ones. He didn't accept it, and laughed at me, saying that the movies are monsters movies, and not dinosaurs movies. I told him that he was right, because the dinosaurs of Jurassic Park are scientific freaks in form of dinosaurs, not real ones. Then he told me to shut up and pay attention :v

The first and second are dinosaur movies mostly because the films made an effort to at least include some dialogue re: paleontologists and paleontology. JP 3 sort of did, but JW didn't bother in the slightest. It was very much a monster movie.

When the first one came out, it was the most scientifically accurate portrayal of dinosaurs yet put to film. Why do people always seem to forget that? You can’t compare it to information we have now. That’s like comparing Star Trek the original series to technology now.

I never knew that Crichton originally envisioned a more child friendly and whimsical Jurassic Park, considering how gruesome the book and its sequel was. The more you know. I do think he would like the way the films are going, as they are keeping the overall theme of the franchise; man’s obsession of controlling and interfering with nature.

To go a step further, Michael was always happy to let other directors do what they want with his work. In an interview in the lost world special features, Crichton said that he preferrers directors to have their own vision than just straight up replication. I think he would have accepted Trevorrow's 'action movie' because it's smart but also definitely a different style.

There must be something to your theory, as "The Lost World", which was an abortion of a movie, had precious little to do with Crichton's book of the same name. There was another island. There were two (small) groups of people. Thats where the similarities end. The book was more of a corporate intelligence / counter-intelligence story (with murderous creatures all about) and was far more interesting than the great big dump that Spielberg took and called a movie. I found Jurassic World more entertaining than The Lost World.

Personally I think he'd be pretty pleased. In a BTS for the first movie he said he totally understood why movie adaptations need to change things from the novels, so he wasn't pent up about how they "weren't faithful" and could see the merits of the film separate from his own material, and what they need to do to be good. The idea of genetic hybrid dinosaurs (as someone who has only heard things about his works) feels like it'd totally fit within what he would write about regarding genetics and playing God (Malcom's "could/should" speech comes instantly to mind). And interestingly to me, the sinister angle taken by InGen in the most recent films is a lot like the rather callous and sinister-Walt-Disney take of Hammond from the original novel.
@PhantomationTV
@PhantomationTV 3 жыл бұрын
Hell, in Crichtons novel Henry Wu mentions how the Dilophosaurus' venom and frills were purposefully genetically engineered and not an original feature. So genetic alteration of dinosaurs to entertain the public has always been a thing in the series. The only argument I could see working to say that Crichton wouldn't apreciate the JW movies (and this is something I firmly believe) is that they flip how we see the dinosaurs. In Jurassic Park the dinos are treated as spectacle because they exist, and their treated like animals with their actions. While in JW the dinos are seen as animals as they exist, the wonder is lost. And the spectacle comes from their actions, treating them like creature feature blockbuster monsters, instead of the animals they are.

Oh god yes! Thank you! I've been seeing articles out the ass about how Fallen Kingdom is a bad idea and the Jurassic World sequels are ruining the franchise and LITERALLY the ONLY argument they have is basically "the first film was the best bc I said so and the new movies are not the original" or some other kind of vague opinionated horseshit about how it's "just another Hollywood blockbuster" and how the first film should have been the only film with no real credibility to their statements. There is SO much ground to explore in a franchise with dinosaurs like Jurassic Park, it would make less sense to stop only at one film.
@bernardcz92
@bernardcz92 6 жыл бұрын
Bret Buckley thank you! I always hear the same argument spouted, "It's not like the original". Nothing will be as the same as seeing JP as a child, I agree. But, many see it through rose-tinted glasses and only care for pandering, instead of bringing in new ideas and concepts and reaching out to a new generation of fans (the older fans think that a franchise can only survive solely on them and not appealing to a new audienve as well). If these people are true to their word, then they should avoid anything that they have done once already, since it won't be like the "first time".
@bretbuckley704
@bretbuckley704 6 жыл бұрын
The biggest complaint I'm seeing from the pompous side of the fanbase is Jurassic World's lack of "awe and wonder that was so powerful in the first film" without acknowledging that first Jurassic Park was awe inspiring and completely ground breaking FOR ITS TIME. Don't get me wrong it still is, but the thing is we've seen dinosaurs in movies after it countless times, so seeing them again in 2015 and 2018, obviously, isn't going to be as special. It was a privilege to live in the 90's to see that technology and believability have such an impact of cinematic history. We've reached a high peak in special effects and artistry for films. Now it's about pushing the franchise forward and doing things it hasn't done before within the respects of its source material. Jurassic World is giving the modern day experience of Jurassic to a new generation while gifting older fans the nostalgia they so much desire. It's what David Koepp said in the making of the Lost World "they know we can do dinosaurs, but now it's about what we can do WITH them"
@bernardcz92
@bernardcz92 6 жыл бұрын
This is why I avoid being overly nostalgic about films I watched in my childhood. JP is still my all-time favorite film, watching the films and reading the books at least once a year, however, I do try to listen to criticisms about it and where the movie fails (i.e. the science debating is not really delved into compared to the novel). In some ways, this is similar to Star Wars. Many SW fans are angry at the new Sequel Trilogy but you find a lot has to do with nostalgia and how they glorify the OT, when even the actors and filmmakers admit the OT were not perfect (Mark Hamill stated his acting back then was not top-notch). They were revolutionary at their time but just bringing back old characters and doing the same thing won't save a franchise (more likely kill it off very quickly). Being so overly protective of childhood films and close-minded to new ideas and adaptations only shows how immature one can be. A franchise cannot survive solely on old fans but it needs new ones and needs to keep itself relevant, with new ideas and concepts. Whether they work or not is subjective but I'd rather the filmmakers take risks than play it safe and pander to nostalgia. Jurassic World kept the nostalgic element to a minimum, allowing us a few scenes where remnants of the old park are shown, just enough to remind us of JP and how Jurassic World was built on the shoulders of JP (emulating what Ian Malcolm said back in JP).
@bernardcz92
@bernardcz92 6 жыл бұрын
Worst is the "[Insert new film addition] has ruined my childhood" argument. How sensitive one has to be to have a new addition to a franchise ruin the memory of their childhood? For me, that means it was not a childhood worth remembering. I saw JP3 and I do think it is the worst JP film in the franchise. But I did not allow a sub-par addition to a franchise ruin my childhood, because it would be just immature.

I think you fried them with that Michael Crichton quote, Klayton. After watching this video, I believe that Michael Crichton would have loved _Jurassic World_ or at least condone it. It's been years since I last read the novels, but from what I remember while reading them, had he wrote a third novel in the series I'm sure it would have involved the creation of genetically-hybrid dinos. How else would the plot have advanced? And not only that, but I feel that the fourth film totally advances the plot from the first film, more so than the second and third. While _Jurassic Park_ showed what happens when we play God, _Jurassic World_ showed what happens when we continue playing God. Those two films alone is why whenever someone brings up the idea of bringing back extinct animals to live, my answer will always be "Hell no."

SilentSaturn The only Bay ish parts were the Chopper scene and the InGen attack scene. The Chopper scene can be defended, it's a great deconstruction of the folly of Man. "The folly of Man is thinking he controls nature and not the other way around." They even hype you up with a military march and talking a little bit about the US military, then quickly show incompetence and drastic failure. But what did you expect, they sent one helicopter against an intelligent predatory animal. The InGen ambush was stupid, but was needed to show Indi was part Raptor. There were some minor plot holes but I would be more interested in you articulating your point, rather than droning on and on.
@silentsaturn7604
@silentsaturn7604 6 жыл бұрын
Bryce Mckenzie Minor plot holes? The entire plot only happens because every single character acts as dumb as they possible could. From incompetent Claire who has no clue how to do her job (she's the real villain), to her nephews who roll into the woods through a demolished fence in a state of emergency, to Owen giving in to the Raptor plan even though he was holding all the cards, to Hoskins coming up with the plan in the first place etc. and so on and that's just scratching the surface. There is nothing redeemable about the story or characters. The people behind it just had some ideas for "cool" set pieces (flying dinosaurs attacking visitors, raptors running next to a motorcycle...) and threw some story elements at it to make it happen. And that's exactly how MB does it. Jurassic World is by far the worst entry in the franchise and the most disappointing film I've ever seen.
@Halofreakanoid
@Halofreakanoid 6 жыл бұрын
The entire plot happens because Henry Wu kept information from Claire and made shady deals behind Merani's back, all while performing unauthorized and secret alterations. Claire is a flawed protagonist who's story arc is only at its beginning. She's the park's operations manager, and I'm interested in your take on how she "has no clue how to do her job". Her nephews did what children do, they make stupid decisions. They also didn't know there was an emergency situation at the time. Owen gave in to the raptor plan because he recognized that the raptors were factually the only way to find the IR and possibly kill it. Hoskin's character is the embodiment of one aspect of the overarching theme. His desire to use wild predatory dinosaurs in a controlled manner is part of the entire theme of the Jurassic park story. As Klayton said, you either don't have a solid working knowledge of the source material and what Jurassic Park is all about, fail to see the very obvious connections it makes, and/or you just don't like what Jurassic - IS - at its core. If JW was the most disappointing movie you've ever seen, then I guarantee you don't watch movies.
@silentsaturn7604
@silentsaturn7604 6 жыл бұрын
RealityStrobe No actually the plot happens because Claire runs a park with minimal security, hires guards as incompetent as she herself and refuses to evacuate the park when a wild monster dinosaur is on the loose and has already killed plenty of people. If they have trackers inside the dinosaurs, the first thing she should have done is to make use of that when she thought the iRex was gone. If she'd done that, they'd realise she's still in the paddock and case closed. No film. But no for the plot to happen Claire is written as an idiot and the iRex is so damn smart it understands trackers, video cameras, thermal sensors and knows to pretend to have climb out of its cage with claw marks on the wall. Apparently it has some Jason Bourne genes in there too.

I mean, would you rather have what they wanted to do for JP4...cuz I don't. I wouldn't want the franchise to just die, especially if would have left off at 3. The movie was good, this fandom is just becoming the new Star Wars fandom...

But they'll never accept that because it's not the OG, and I'm worried the Jurassic fandom will become that. I have 100% faith JWFK will be great, but the JW haters will find something to bitch about..

To be honest i think that JW is a bit ridiculous at times (when Blue co-ordinates with Rexy to take down the Indominus) and I don't like it as much as the first movie... However in the past movies we had a Spinosaurus with a phone in the belly that announces itself like the crocodile in Peter Pan and that's literally EVERYWHERE on the island during the event of the film and raptors that every movie are smarter than in the last :P. All in all I watched this movie like 4 times, I have all the DVDs and even though the trailers for JWFK do not intrigue me that much (the volcano exploding and such I find a little bit over the top) I know I'll go watch it and I'll buy the DVD anyway. Just to say, only because there are some goofy elements or flaws (which movie doesn't have flaws) doesn't mean it's less enjoyable.

I actually read the first two books and have seen the first two movies multiple times. I absolutely love them and the universe they create. The characters are pristine, the plots are amazing, the visuals are also equally as great. I love Jurassic Park. I have very mixed feelings for Jurassic Park 3, and I hate Jurassic World, and Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom. I have spent many years fascinated by the first 3 movies and books. They really are the greatest pieces of art ever in my eyes. JW's acting, writing, and special effects are incredibly dumb and unbelievable. I can't suspend disbelief with either of the Jurassic World movies because of how absurdly they present themselves. Every Jurassic film since The Lost World has either had really unfortunate production setbacks (JP3) or are soulless cash-grabs with bad writing, directing, special fx, and they are all incredibly alienating to fans of the original movies and books. In my opinion.

In the novel (by Crichton) Wu proposes to Hammond to create the kind of dinosaurs the public expects to see. Slower and dumb. Hammond rejects this. The novel (and movie) tells us the animals are genetically engineered to be females, unable to synthesize lysine and a faster growth in order to gain fully grown mature animals (investors won't wait for 5-10 years). And lets not forget about the frog DNA. This essentially states that ALL the dinosaurs are hybrids already. The Indominus and Indoraptor are simply the next step created by Wu in the movies. And it still has the same result: the creation turns onto its creators. Crichton would like that.

He would like the World movies more then he did the 3rd movie. That being said the only thing that's lacking about the World movies is the lack of a "scientist hero." The lack of one is more akin to his later works, when he became much more technophobic, and borderline anti-science. Otherwise the themes are spot on, and Fallen Kingdom seems to be fallowing up on the threat of a dino-apocalypse that was hinted at in the novels.

If the "journalist" had any decent arguments on why Michael Crichton would despise Jurassic World would be really nitpicking at something they barely understood. Honestly I don't know whether or not he would've loved the movies (I don't know his opinion on the films and what I've seen most authors who eventually see their works get turned into movies, most of them either hate it or don't like it), because Michael always had a very bloodthirsty approach to the way he made the Jurassic Park books; not only that but there would've been more talking and philosophy in his writing. For example in the first book while shit was going down while Grant and the kids were out in the park, there was a few pages dedicated to Dr. Wu's backstory on how he was hired by John Hammond and how the working relationship between the two was always one sided. How John Hammond always demanded more of his work and to make it work according to his designs and what would make the park more profitable; and driving home the idea that people in charge of revolutionary new advances will always "find a way" to pollute the basic concept just to make more money. To finally end this gigantic paragraph, Michael Crichton I believe would at least appreciate the fact that one of the main themes of Jurassic World was how consumer greed has grown to massive sizes and how corporations continuously make bigger and "better" products. I'm not sure if whether or not he would like the story and characters, but I'm pretty sure he would at the very least enjoy watching Owen Grady being the Ian Malcolm of the movie at times.

The beautiful thing about this series if you don’t enjoy the new films, you don’t have to watch them. If you enjoy them, then you can keep watching. For me personally, I’m not a huge fan of the online canon aspect of the newer Jurassic films, but I can appreciate them. I also really liked Jurassic World, but didn’t like Fallen Kingdom as much. I did enjoy the latter half of FK, the more horror themed scenes with the Indoraptor felt like it was ripped straight from the pages of Jurassic Park the novel.

Though Jurassic World doesn't take as much time to do philosophical deep dives into the discussion surrounding the park and dinosaurs like the original film does, it's conceptually a loving amalgamation of Crichton's core themes, as well as a sun-soaked techno-thriller adventure for people of all ages. Hoping Fallen Kingdom manages to add to this, despite my apprehension.

Great video! As soon as Jurassic World was announced I was worried. I had read Crichton's novels and just the idea of a hybrid dinosaur made me anxious. Closer to the film's release, however, I found myself more excited for it and when I eventually got to see it, I thought it was awesome! I saw it a total of four times in the cinema and from the latest viewings I could see a theme of "control" in the movie. How we all think we're in control of a situation and how actually not in control we really are. Many scenes in the movie depict this quite well, in a subtle kind of way. I thought it was brilliant and in-line with Crichton's novels. Let's just hope JW: Fallen Kingdom does this as well. Anyway man, I thought your video would be just some ramblings about how JW ruined Crichton's work, etc. I was pleasantly surprised and you just got a new subscriber ^^. Keep up the good work! :)

Personally, I think Jurassic World was a missed opportunity. The Indominus shouldn't have been villainized, I think the film would've had more heart if the Indominus died at the end fighting humans and not other dinosaurs. The Indominus was the victim, not the villain. I think a better movie would've been the Indominus Rex escaping it's enclosure, freeing the other dinosaurs, while the humans flip their shit but realize that they created this mutant and not they're paying the consequences. The Indominus, with good writing, could've had a role similar to King Kong in the 2005 film, it would've been touching and made not only just a good film like Jurassic World was, but a great one

Also read Dragon Teeth and liked it, nevermind the poor reviews, I liked it, especially since Chriton started it before Jurassic Park but it wasn't finished or published until after his death... sort of like it brought him back... like Tupac actually! No one can say for sure but it seems likely that Chriton would get a kick out of Jurassic World... and Westworld too... I don't know if he was one of those people that thought that source material for movies and television were more important, but I can't imagine that bringing a book, play, ect, to life in a way that does justice is ever a bad thing.

Jacob Anaya While Jack has been wrong, this likely isn’t the case with his Dracorex, Pachycephalosaurus, and Stigymoloch theory due to the overwhelming evidence in support of it. Even if we completely ignore his spongey bone method of dating dinosaur fossils, why is it we have only ever found baby Dracorex and Stigymolochs and only ever found Adult Pachycephalosaurus? It’s rather strange. Especially when you realize all “three” dinosaurs lived in the exact same area at the exact same time.

Michael Crichton didn't want to write a book for the 3rd installment of the films because he couldn't think of a good reason to get back to the island. He was putting storytelling first. Jurassic World had some good ideas and concepts, but it botched every single one of them. From the characters, plot, special effects, dialogue; Everything felt underdeveloped. Spielberg handed it of to Johnson and then to Trevorrow. This franchise keeps getting handed to less experienced directors and the quality of the films degrades every time. I'm glad to see interest in the franchise reinvigorated but if the quality of this last movie is any indication of the direction the film is moving, I'm worried this series will cease to be anything special.
