It's very difficult to comment someone's else work because we have our own taste and style, then we always try to improve according to that. However, doesn't mean we are right to other's eyes and this what turns this hobby in something so special and diversified. For me, the most difficult part, mostly when we do it professionally, is taking care of someone's else work, trying to understand their point of view and what they want to achieve, even when it's not our favorite style. Put ourselves in someone's shoes is definitely difficult and I'm sure lots of aquascapers would learn a lot, even if it was just once in a lifetime. I have a big respect for all that take care of the maintenance of someone's work! It's damn difficult!!! Cheers guys and was so great to see some of you in Germany past weeks. Take care and see you soon!

I think the problem with many Dutch style tanks is that the aquascapers are not creative enough with the distribution of plant color and plant texture so the result is just a massive multicolor bush. The plant colors and plant textures are the hardscape in those tanks. Coming up with creative ways to emphasize a particular texture or color would make them more interesting.
@FAAOAquascaping2 жыл бұрын
Not really... Lot of people think that a Dutch style tank is just a planted aquarium without hardscape and have groups of stem plants... But, it's indeed a bit more than that. There are some rules that we don't even know, unless we are Dutch and really into it. It was crazy for me when I was judging and commenting the general appearance and then listen the guys that really know something about it... It's a bit more complex than I thought. Just do a deep research about it and you will see about what I'm talking about. 😉

Watching the build video of that, you can see that they were in an almost constant conflict over the number of plants to use, I felt this friction, the limited selection and the time constraints if y filming, were antithetical to constructing something as delicate and precise as a Dutch style.

I think it's informative to see an aquascape thoughtfully critiqued because it's a way of learning and of understanding how others see the work.

Very informative. One of the toughest things in art is the ability to criticize your own work. Sometimes having an outside voice is the best. I am sure Tommy, Balasz, and Viktor working together brings out the best in all three. To me, the tanks are all a joy to look at. My favorite might be the tiger barb jungle tank or the walk around tank with the rice fish. Can't go wrong with any of them. Thank you, take care.

The sand substrate on the moss only iwagumi. I feel like it doesnt suit the scape. Its like someone placed the rocky moist mountains from a green valley on top of a beach. I am also not sure what might suit it better. Maybe a full carpet with varying heights as per the geography OR a rocky bottom with various size of rocks, pebbles and sand with spots of green carpet plants. Also the background. Is there a bg? Its like a blue unnatural sky.
@TheAquadise2 жыл бұрын
Tommy the moss only Iwagumi would benefit from larger stones at the base of the left side of the aquarium. Also on the video the placement of some of the stones could face a bit forward. I can imagine seeing the tank from the side and it would look too horizontal.

Love both of the large shallow cube tanks. Maybe in Tommys iwagumi 90x90x30, perhaps just add a small rhino stone in the shade area rather than introduce another plant? The riccardia iwagumi, just level the sand foreground 😃 Beauty really is in the eye of the beholder, aquascaping can be very personal 💚

Thanks, really great video it is nice to see all your tanks in one video. For the moss only tank I would change the type of rocks used. I do not like those too much because they look like concrete and take away form the sense of nature.

IDEA: Maybe try different backgrounds. Black ones, photo ones, colorful ones, or even play with the blurred transparent ones that have a spot light indicating the sun, etc… play with light! IDEA no.2: I personally have different “mood” setup for my aquascapes when lights go off. I have those tiny reading led light spots beaming in the middle of the tank, I have some small blue led lights beaming into a Brazilian aquascape making it like the moon stands above it, etc. Nothing that creates algae of course. Nothing intense. All lights go out after 23:00 and switch on 3 hours before the normal Chihiros one switches on for the 8 hours daytime period.

I’m very different in that I love the Dutch style tanks with big bushes of multicoloured plants. The contrast between green, red, pink, orange are just breathtaking. I personally love red plants so that’s big points for me. I really dislike the iwagumi tanks because I feel like the fish have nowhere to hide if they want to and they always seem more stressed. Like all those tiny fish cowering in that small shady area that didn’t grow any plants. It does look nice, but it needs a small area of longer, bushier plants to provide cover and hiding spots, but this is just my personal opinion.

Great video! But I have a question, If I am using Seachem Stability during the cycling of the tank, should I do the daily water changes at the first week, then water changes every other day and continuing this way constantly? Or should I let the bacterias to grow and stable on the filter without water changes? Because there's a lot of ammonia being released by the aquasoil and I don't know if I am doing it well. Thank you guys!

A mature tank with slow growing plants does not be redone after a year or three. Just because some hairgrass in your foreground is overgrown, dig that out.
@goodvishnu2 жыл бұрын
Totally unrelated, i took inspiration from you and raised two hills with aquasoil, nutrient substrate underneath it, just to avoid leeching, topped that with abou 5-6cms of mixed gravel. Would it cause an issue for the bacteria, would they suffer low oxygen or something? The Hill's are about 2cm of nutrient substrate, 30cm of aquasoil and 5-6 cm of gravel on top Thanks so much!

Sometimes i see fish tank with different rotala spieces next to eachother. I tried this also. But some have different grow speed, and in the end they are growing mixed, which is not good for contrast, do you plant, rotala next to eachother, and how you keep them seperated if you do?

We found they grow kinda at the same pace, but you can always top-off, and that will equalize growth.

Tommy's tank is stunning, as I am asked what I would change, it would be the shape of the top rock on the left of the valley, it's so strangely shaped that it breaks the illusion of a natural rock outcrop, looks too much like a human hand, too sculpted looking, catches the attention a bit too long.

You guys don't like Dutch because you don't like the maintenance plus the point here is to keep plants healthy and looking their best of their nature, real aquatic gardening work! rocks and wood don't have live that's more boring to me and occupies more space than the plants, all plants used are always easy to keep and low demanding that's so mediocre, and of course from the sales point its more profitable.
