John is always thinking through the moral, tactical, and legal ramifications of taking action in a bad situation. To think "what if" is usually considered paranoia, but if you're paying attention to today's culture, it may benefit you to consider all angles - prepare mentally before you have to act in the real world.

I actually had the somebody breaking into my car scenario happen to me. I started video recording and placed my phone in my breast pocket (it's tall enough the lense doesn't get covered) like a body cam. Then I put on a smile and asked "you lock yourself out? Dude, that sucks!". This caused him to look at me, agree, and start making up a BS story about how his girlfriend locked the keys in the car. It also allowed me to get a good look at his waste line. After getting good footage of the guy's face and voice, I backed off about 25 feet and called 911. I say "there's a guy trying to break into my car, I got video of his face up close" and he looks up to see me holding a gun. (Finger off the trigger pointed straight down, but out of the holster in case he decided to do something stupid and as a warning in case he tried to assault me to take my phone). The look on his face was priceless. He booked, cops showed up eventually and got a copy of the video and took the mangled coat hanger as evidence. He scratched the crap out of the inside of my passenger door. But it was kind of a beater anyway.

Great stuff! Will have my daughter and her husband over and play one scenario at a time and discuss each. Let me tell you what happens when there is no plan and not including your spouse. True story: I'm sawing logs at 2 am. My wife smacks me awake and says someone's in the house. I grab my shotgun and head for the door of the bedroom to investigate. All of a sudden a light goes on in the living room. My wife is running ahead (out in front)of me in her panties and t-shirt running through the house flipping lights on to see who's broken into the house. 😱Seriously my brain is on fire. So much for a stealthy search, possible ambush of a bad guy, possible self defense shoot of a bad guy. Now I'm looking at possibly shooting my wife in the back of the head, her becoming a hostage or being shot by the intruder. She's a smart person, a RN manager, she handles stress and crisis every day and this really happened all because we didn't have a plan. Thankfully no intruder was there. We have plans now

Hate to burst your bubble but I live with my brother and his wife. We are all above 60 years old and my sister-in-law and I have this, my brother not so much. He refuses to think he is human and needs a plan. If he has a plan he has not shared it with us, and will not discuss a plan with us. I have taught people how to plan and work scenarios, but "a prophet is not welcome in their own home". 2 days ago we are sitting around our farmhouse 1000 foot down the gravel drive, eating lunch, watching Matt Dillon on Gunsmoke, when the front storm door opens quickly and someone tries to open the front door. Of course it was locked (remember, I like to plan ahead). I investigate the door immediately because I am closest to it, with my hand on my concealed pistol,(that is always on me). Our dogs have now started a full farm cry and the Malinwa is being ferocious. I look back in the room to see if anyone else has moved or taken positions and I see my brother up and retrieving his single action .22 revolver. I am thinking great, he is going to shoot me if anyone burst through here. I open the door like we were taught in church security (I could see no one from the fish-eye in the door). I see a shoulder of an older lady standing there and as I pie the door jamb, her eyes where as big as saucers ands asks if she is at so-in-so's residence (our neighbors house). I politely tell her how to get to our neighbors and the excitement is over. We discussed how quickly something could happen but it was then dropped because he was not privy to discuss it. My sister-in-law has actually run cocaine burglars out the driveway with her car before. That is another story.....

As to the movie theater one specifically though I've played this one out with the wife before. Around here all of the theaters in my area have a row a little over half way up that's got a concrete ledge in-front of it, usually overtop of the entry way you came in although one is just a divider on the walkway. Take the row behind that, preferably the one over the hallway on the outside edges. This gives you good cover from over half of the room and a quick drop directly into the nearest exit if that's the needed move. There's no perfect option for any of these but I've found that to be the best one for movie theaters if needed.

For the first question, the choice is improve home security. You NEVER want a situation where someone can kick in your door without a LOT of effort. It should take several minutes of determined effort to get in that way. Windows should have bars if possible, but, if not, at least ensure they have metal blinds. Blinds will slow a person down by several seconds as they have to carefully move them to avoid getting entangled. If the blinds also clip at the bottom, that makes them even better. The whole point is to delay the person so that anyone inside has a chance to grab a weapon and get to a safer area.

I've always remembered that and I continue to formulate scenarios myself. Disclaimer, I may not have the quote exactly right..

On top of the particulars for each of these specific cases, I try to got about daily life guided by the tried and true general principles: - Where there's more than three (bad guys), I will not be. - Around bad guys, never relax. It might not prevent all episodes of violence, but it does a good job at avoiding about 90% of them. That's it. Nothing fancy. Also the quest for good schools (with as few bad guys as possible) never ends.

I have always had these scenarios going in my mind even when I was around 6 yrs old. I believe the good LORD wires certain people this way. I will watch some of the Active Self Protection videos to see real life scenarios and think, "how can I avoid this situation, or how can I prepare for such a situation, or what would I do?" I have even taught classes on personal situational awareness to women of all ages. In doing so I have done a ton of research on the cycle of violence. Don't rely on just yourself, "how would I react" because you have never been in such a situation. Learn from some who has, so you can feel the panic and train yourself to move through it. Reactions are not always best unless they have been practiced. I still hear from some of the ladies how they were aware of a situation and avoided or deescalated it because of what we learned in the classes.

On the second one I've had that happen to me with a guy who had severe autism and I just walked right past him keeping an eye on him with my peripheral. I was in high school and he had stolen some scissors from his teacher and was running down the wallway with them. My mind was on deescalation and it worked. I felt that he was concentrated on running and if I stayed out of his way and payed him no mind I wouldn't get stabbed. Not always the right answer though, if he had been hearing stuff or had some accompanying mental illnesses I may have had to break contact or stand my ground.

I said if I tell her to “run or go”, just take off in the safest direction without hesitation and call for help. I would give her enough time to get away, while they likely won’t chase with me there. I would rather one of us (her) get away safely, than both us us staying and getting hurt possibly. What would you do?

So, the answer is always "D" Kidding. Oddly I've experienced several of these examples firsthand. Was a kid when three guys kicked in my house door to rob the place. They were more shocked than we were, because they thought the place was empty. Then the dog escorted them home. I've walked up on someone trying to break into my car. I asked him if he locked his keys in the car, and offered to call someone if he needed help. He pretended that someone was on the way and walked off. I know he saw me get in the car and drive away. In my old neighborhood we often had mentally challenged homeless people who'd walk the streets talking to themselves. Generally, they'd ignore you just like you probably ignore them. But keep an eye out for warning signs. You don't know who they think they're talking to, and I've seen people get hurt In that same bad neighborhood I've seen people running down the street with a fun in the hand, and even may have witnessed a shooting. I kept it to myself. May not have been right, but snitches get stitches.

I'll be honest, I know we go through a lot of these "If" scenarios but, no matter your situation what will you do After? Do you talk to the Police? Do you call a lawyer? Do you have USCCA? I'll be honest, officers are there to collect information only! I know this because family members are officers and they tell me this. 90% of their work is paperwork, collecting information. They are not your friends after an incident. This is why when an officer discharges his firearm, other officers are quick to pull that officer away from the scene to protect them. Anything you say to officers willing or unwilling will be used against you in a court of law. That means if you choose to remain silent and you put into the back of a squad and your talking to yourself out loud there is cameras and Mics inside that record your information on the record. One thing people don't think about, what is your Family going to say?, because that will be used against you as well. If you need to protect your family from an intruder, you fear for your life. You discharge a firearm, you choose to remain silent until a lawyer is present but, your wife and kids are freaking out and get questioned. What will they do? Anything they say will be used against you in a court of law. We've seen this all to many times. The wife says she saw someone in the house husband shoots injures or kills the intruder, wife says, she didn't see his face, or hear a bang, the husband went for his gun, didn't call the police first, it was all to fast... That stuff will land you in prison for defending your home and family.

Here's one: You're spending a few days at a friend's apartment with him and his girlfriend, and another mutual buddy is there. It's early evening, and you're all sitting in the living room, yakking and watching TV. Suddenly, your host hears some muffled noise in the hallway. He opens the door, and in bursts three big, hulking guys wearing masks, and two of them are brandishing revolvers. You can see the rounds in the chambers. What do you do? BTW: this actually happened to me, years ago. Uh, it didn't quite turn out as they had hoped...and nobody got shot.

The answer is for each person watching to do the work of considering scenarios with few if any good outcomes possible. Then think of how to avoid them. Then if unavoidable, think through what options have the best possibility of positive (least negative) outcome. Do you scan your surroundings? Do you choose your location based on ingress/egress, cover, etc when you enter a room? Do you ask yourself what would I do if...? Does your spouse (other family members often with you) know what their role is? Have you discussed such things? My wife refuses to carry a firearm but is competent with one, that's her choice. I carry everywhere always. We have spoken and unspoken signals for emergencies. She knows to seek cover away from me whether we're alone or with grandkids, etc. If she can escape the area even better. I will place myself in the position to confront, distract or engage the threat drawing all focus to myself if needed while she seeks safety. If that mean sending, and or, drawing fire so be it. I'm armed and trained. I carry a backup in a pocket holster. It's not necessarily for me. I can hand it off given time, and she will be armed as well with 13 rounds in a P365 as a last ditch effort if I fail. I may not choose to act, I may just observe. That will depend on many factors including threat level and ability to evade/escape. If I do act, she knows I'll be the focus and she'll have better odds of escape. The exits and possible cover have been predetermined as we enter without even having to have a conversation. This type of OPEC may seem extreme but its automatic now. Decades back a firearm and awareness saved our lives while traveling. Since that time we've had many conversations about scenarios and sollutions. After 38 years married, she knows how I think and can almost read my mind. With a look she knows immediately if I'm on alert and what to do instinctively until what I'm keeping an eye on resolves itself. You can learn to be alert and aware, prepared without it being uncomfortable or paranoid. But it takes effort at first to develop that awareness. I don't know anyone who hasn't had a close call with extreme malevolence that develops this ability. I know very few who have looked evil in the eye and escaped it who don't develop it to some degree.

There's been a couple of times I've been in either genuine danger, or misconstrued danger, and it's weird how your brain just goes clear sometimes, like there's a whole lot of options to pick from, if you get to the other side of panic. I don't like the options I come up with sometimes, but at least I am trying to problem-solve. It's not being brave; I think bravery is when you're scared but do something ANYWAY, like you know the danger and choose to face it, whereas it's more like on the other side of blind terror there's a place everything is really matter of fact and being scared can happen later. When the actually bad stuff was happening my brain seemed to be just figuring out ways out of this, trying to be proactive (with varying levels of success, but enough that I'm here to type this), and then when it was over, THEN I had jelly knees and cried. I'm really glad you mentioned guys who prepare like this talking about it with their wives/girlfriends/female family (although you have female viewers too!). As a woman, sadly most of the biggest threats women face are going to be people we know, often men in our lives (but there's some crazy women out there too, and I once had to fight off another woman who tried to sexually assault me in a toilet). I've been to some women's self-defence classes, looked up videos and advice, etc. it's always the 'what if you get jumped in an alley, or trying to get to your car' scenarios that we're told to prepare for, but which are the type that make up like about 15% of all assaults on women. For us situational awareness needs to include more about reading behavioural red flags from strangers and from people you know and how to extricate yourself before it gets to fighting of any kind, and not so hyper-focused on the stranger-danger type rapists. Also, not much of it thinks about what kind of work women often do, as we're often in customer-facing jobs and that comes with a lot of dangers like people trying to rob the store you're in or violent customers and, the prepared pro-forma 'what to do if someone tries to rob the shop' training you get at health and safety at work stuff always assumes that you're already behind the kiosk - but what do you do if you're stacking shelves when someone tries to rob the shop, or if you're waitressing and a customer starts getting violent, or if you're on reception and your work doesn't have door security, etc. Those are all pretty common scenarios where women can be in danger that are often overlooked.
