As the son of two police officers I was taught to react quickly in situations like this but it wasn't an immediate response, it took years of reinforcement from an early age, and in any dangerous situation that primal fear is still there. I understand a lot of these people, this is why "What Would You Do?" is a show with a genius premise.

i need to correct myself here. it's more to do with diffusion of responsibility and the bystander effect than the fight or flight response; the more people witnessing the event the less responsibility each individual feels they have and the stronger the feeling that someone else with do something. check out the case study of Kitty Genovese
