Ah, France. The country of decadent cuisine, fine art and fashion, and the shining example of European democracy. At least, that’s what France in the American imagination looks like. In reality, France’s sterling image neglects its history of colonial violence, never-ending religious repression of Muslims, and racist political rhetoric, on the left and right. In this episode of “Backspace,” host Sana Saeed explores the pitfalls of romanticizing France and suggests how Western media can do a better job framing the country in the context of its inconsistent values and colonial past.

@margaretgreenwood4243 I agree. This issue has never been before but suddenly now. I think europe has gone through the enlighten era where it separates itself from religion. One law for everyone might be controversial, but people have to understand that religion should be in the heart, temple, and home of a person, not on the state of governance. French care about its culture and might lose if it follows one part of the religion, a special privilege, and other remain the same. And soon it overtakes the country.

At the end of sixteenth century, we had faced decades of War of Religion. A solution was found by king Henry IV. French Catholics and Huguenots could finaly live in peace in one condition : the power of the king had to be higher than the power of any Christian religion. The king himself changed his religion, showing that his political interests where higher than faith. Later, our Republic symbolized barbary for many people in the world. The Popes claimed they were against french Republic. A solution was found at the beginning of twentieth century : separation between Church and State. Religion became something private and could no more interfere with public life of citizens.

@annerigby4400 2 жыл бұрын
@@BugsAreCoolIGuess You cannot look at France with the same eyes that you look at the US. US society is a racist society, intolerant of people that are non-white, non-christian. France is a country that has recently become focused on radicalised Islamic movements in France because of attacks and threats. Before that, the whole head scarf thing came about because of french liacity.... i.e. no religion as politics or social measure. So everyone is free to follow whatever religion, but not free to impose it on others. There have been incidents in France where Muslim parents have been 'offended' by the mention of Christmas in schools. Christmas in France is not a religious event, not since the Revolution. It is a cultural event. To some French people it is a religious event. Remember that France's culture is originally Judeo-Christian so there are many cultural social events and activities tied to that. When Muslim leaders demand that the cultural events be taken out of the calendar of France, it will cause problems. It had nothing to do with religion, but an 'attack' on culture. How would Americans feel if some group living in the US, that had been there for decades (there have been Muslims in France for a very long time and nobody had a problem with any cultural differences until recently) and that was very much a part of the society, suddenly declared that they were offended by the Fourth of July? would Americans remove the festivities of that day? As I said, it is impossible for Americans to understand what goes one with cultural differences in France. There has been a right-wing movement in France for a couple of decades that is doing its best to create a 'hatred of the other' and it seems to be working, unfortunately. Personally, I think banning headscarves in schools was a bad idea, simply because when dealing with teenagers, bans usually accomplish the opposite. However, I have a friend who worked in elementary schools and she saw little girls, under 12, getting beaten up by their brothers (who brought them to school), if they had let their headscarf slip or were showing too much hair. So, perhaps the idea of the headscarf being used to oppress girls and women, might also be a problem. It is a lot more complicated than 'racism' or 'intolerance'. There are girls who wear a headscarf because they have to and there are girls who wear a headscarf because they want to. None of these girls have to wear a headscarf based on the Quran. It is a social thing, not a religious one.

There’s nothing wrong here the problem with these religious beliefs is that they always want to impose and make other people believe and accept their beliefs. For example if someone visits a Muslim country they are supposed to abide by Muslim rules and not try and tell the Muslim community that I will not do this because I’m not Muslim. Same as when Muslims visit Christian countries and non Muslim countries, they can’t impose their beliefs and dictate that non Muslim country. You can’t tell a local school in France 🇫🇷 to stop serving pork because your son or daughter goes to that school. They must adjust to the culture there. Same as for Christian as well.

Bringing over family members the hold extreme anti western views from wartorn countries and setting them up in mosques from where their ideology can gain a foothold, attempting to impose sharia law in European towns, calling for Sharia law to imposed in European spaces. These are just some of the things that come along for the ride with that nice Muslim family down the road. Islam is by its nature an expansionist religion, many of the concepts in its are designed to ensure the spread of Islam. Don’t get me wrong there are many amazing things that Islam and Muslims have fostered, but by its nature Islam Seeks to depose or subjugate every other form of belief system and people in the world. my pov as a French: 10 y ago, I was quite open to immigration; now, I'm firmly against. Too many problems, too much change. I've never cared when a woman wore a a veil; I care now, because sometimes in the bus, I'm the only woman not wearing one. Immigration is not a problem when it's controled, and the people coming, comparable. I understand that showing the Prophet hurts muslims; I don't understand that it hurts French, even if they are muslims; because this freedom of speech is our best weapon. Edit: Doesn't mean that France is just a victim: we still have too much power over some african countries, and meddle in middle east buisness.

Exactly. I think a lot of people here are commenting from the American and somewhat British mentality of how their country is a country for everybody and you nad your identity come first, then your citizenship and what that means. France is not that way, French people don't buy the "hyphenated" identity most people in say the US sustain. And that's okay. Different nations are built differently and in their own right. Regardless of what you may say these people chose to go to France rather than a different country, and no matter what they're facing now their lives are better off than had they stayed in their motherlands. People know that France puts law, secularity, and its own culture before everything else if you're French. It's not a melting pot because it's not a nation of immigrants.

And if someone destroyed your home , you went to their house tell them you ruined my place of living then you must leave me a space in your house ,then he says no , what would do , would you just say it's his rules then I shall respect it ??? You seem to forget the social benefits that France offers to anyone living there. Benefits that are paid by French citizens so they can enjoy them. Without going back to the colonization problems imposed by the French in Africa- and they were many_ the fact seems to be, according to many French people I spoke to, that ex-colonialzed come to France with the intention of taking advantage of the social benefits without contributing, which create resentment and distrust among French citizens. Many North Africans have integrated themselves among the local population and are broadly accepted. The violence comes from dissidents and extremists who do not want to be accepted!! I have witnessing towns in the suburb of Paris where a large community of ex-colonializeds- mostly muslims live in peace with the local population. They sell their wares, have their shops and mosque. Religion or the acceptance of the muslim faith is not entirely at the root of the problem. It is much deeper than what you show. I am French but I have lived in a few countries and my being integrated in the society of these foreign countries was to respect the native culture and ways of life while at the same time keeping my culture without imposing it on adoptive countries!

To get a sense how the French viewed (and still view) the people, culture and heritage of the Algerians, look at Le Corbusier's plan for Algiers. In this city re-envisioning, the old sections were torn down and replaced with literal walls of buildings, and the ancient Kasbah Quarter was to be segregated by these structures. We in the US see France as appreciative of art and culture, but there is a brutal and oppressive side of French society that has facets of totalitarianism and cultural oppression. It is note worthy to point out that the city plan for Pyongyang was modeled after Le Corbusier's work.

French Muslims are certainly disenfranchised but at least they are represented in media (fiction and non fiction) as well as the government. They are not denied basic existence and the history of colonisation and issues such as institutionalised racism are widely talked about in mainstream media. Many of the US Muslim immigrants were from Iranians escaping the religious dictators and they became integrated into the American culture. Throughout history, the French have been known for their aggressive imperialist and colonialist tendencies. From the 16th to the 20th century, France has colonized numerous territories around the world, including parts of Africa, Asia, and the Caribbean. The French used their military power and economic influence to gain control over these territories, often exploiting the resources and people for their own benefit. This ruthless pursuit of power and expansion resulted in numerous war crimes and atrocities committed by the French. One of the most infamous examples is the brutal treatment of the people of Algeria during the Algerian War of Independence. The French military used torture, mass killings, and forced displacement of civilians in an attempt to suppress the Algerian independence movement. This disregard for human rights and dignity is a clear demonstration of the French's ruthless and inhumane approach to colonialism and imperialism. Furthermore, the French also carried out brutal and exploitative policies in their colonies, such as forced labor and land seizures, which had devastating effects on the local populations. In Vietnam, the French imposed heavy taxes and forced the local people to work in plantations and mines, leading to widespread poverty and suffering. The French also actively suppressed any resistance or uprisings from the colonized people, often resorting to violent methods to maintain their control. Even after the end of colonial rule, the French have continued to perpetrate war crimes and human rights violations in their former colonies. In the 1990s, France supported the Hutu-led government in Rwanda, despite knowing about the planned genocide against the Tutsi minority. This complicity in the genocide resulted in the deaths of over 800,000 people and has left a lasting scar on the relationship between France and Rwanda. The French have also been accused of committing war crimes during their intervention in the civil war in the Central African Republic in 2013. French soldiers have been accused of sexually abusing children and killing civilians, leading to calls for an investigation into these allegations. These incidents highlight the ongoing issues of French military intervention and their disregard for the rights and well-being of the people in the countries they colonized. It is clear that French imperialism, colonialism, and their resulting war crimes have had long-lasting and devastating effects on the countries and people they have exploited. It is time for the French to acknowledge and take responsibility for their actions and learn from the mistakes of their past. Instead of glorifying their colonial history, they should work towards reparations and reconciliation with the countries they have harmed. Only then can the French truly move towards a more just and equitable relationship with their former colonies and the world at large.

France’s freedom of speech laws aren’t like the US. The threat is journalists who target specific groups and hide behind legal doctrines to protect their rhetoric. People often forget that France killed over 5 million people during the course of its occupation in Algeria. Within the first three decades of French occupation, a third of the indigenous population had died, due to famine, war, and massacres. Another 2 million were sent to internment camps. Such atrocities have tangible effects that permeate French society to this day and forgetting this leads to complacency of the racism felt by French Muslims. News media often speaks of the "civilizational clash" between France and Islam, but fail to discuss how the colonization and occupation of France's former colonies impact the living conditions and social status of French Muslims, an extremely reductionist viewpoint.

@@Kamfrenchie I'm not really sure what the point you're trying to make is. France was also bad to Indochina, specifically Vietnam, but South Vietnam didn't make trouble for France? I'm not talking about the current relationships that France has with countries, but rather the impact of French colonization has on formerly colonized people, living in and out of France. I don't think anyone can deny that crimes on such the a level that were committed by the French colonizers could still impact formerly colonized places, especially since the French were present in the colonies for so long. This can be seen in many places, not just France. I'm reminded of the American institution of slavery, and how Americans still feel its impacts today. French Vietnamese people also do face xenophobia and racism in France, and this was especially seen with the rise of anti-Asian racism with COVID-19, but I suspect it's less for a couple reasons. One, there are much fewer Vietnamese people living in France than there are Muslims, so Muslims are seen as a greater threat. And two, because they are seen as a greater threat, any outward sign of their faith is seen as an attack on French culture, because it does not line up with the mainstream French identity.

Why is it that none of them have attacked Charlie Hebdo or any other institution representing French elites? France's brutal colonial history is real. Islam's exceptional resistance to secularism is also real, there are no countries called 'Christian/Budhist Republic of...' Islamic tradition is deeply invested in the ideal of an Islamic State. As a Dutch man in France, Bourgogne and Paris, I can say that the problem is far more complex and has only so much to do with history but more with everyday life in cities and fear of change in the countryside that is mainly driven by ignorance. In Paris we have two extremes, open well educated and well integrated and therefore moderate Muslim North Africans and low educated secluded Muslim North Africans that have no business mixing with non Muslims since the French lifestyle and social norms and values are haram. It's like mixing oil and water. Parallel there is a group of mostly young North African men that don't have a legal status and have to live either in undocumented jobs or on the street trying to make a daily living with illegal activities. The first group is more or less invisible the latter though is extremely visible and is building up a frustration in the rest of the population although these young men don't have another choice most of the time. I would like to see more effort going into education of the last two groups and a smarter French/EU immigration policy, it might be able to create more unity. There are also many immigrants from all over the world including sub Sahara Africans but we don't see the same problems there.
@johannasegard737
@johannasegard737 2 жыл бұрын
Ok yeah, just one little precision : you speak of two extremes, but most "muslims" are situated in the middle (and probably closer to that extrême of open, integrated, "educated") and the radicalisation of many of the people from the 1st of your 2 problematic groups has been in my opinion done by decades of stigmatisation and marginalisation. The retreat of public services in the banlieues, the constant présence of hostile police forces who experiment more and more aggressive technics on those populations, and the recurrent use of the hijab by french politicians to counter scandals in government ie. les contre-feux. So education is always good (particularly for french society at large to re-acquaint itself with our laïque values, which are that, religious expressions as long as it doesn't threaten public order is guaranteed by the state) but I'm not sure it is enough here...

@joostandhisband9648 2 жыл бұрын
@@johannasegard737 What I meant is that when you live in Paris you go for a cup of coffee or shopping or a glass of wine or a dinner, you meet people from all kinds of backgrounds and when you have a conversation it doesn't really matter where they are coming from or what they believe. But if you have a hostile attitude towards other people because of different backgrounds it's impossible to create unity in a society. Personally I am not religious but as far as I understand all religions are advocating that everything is connected, all is part of each other, even science agrees with that. So if anything in a certain religion is meant to divide people than hopefully more knowledge through education might moderate these hostile attitudes. I think it would be better to increase the educational efforts in the Banlieues and give young people a better access to a successful life than sending more police. To give this a chance you need the help of the communities in these area's and the acknowledgement of the problems and it's solutions by the whole of the population and the political spectrum. It's like waking up to the present facts and it's future consequences and make a collective U turn. The middle you are talking about is the French Muslims that are pretty much religious but keep it for themselves and mostly interact in their intimate life with other Muslims but on a day to day base respectfully with everybody else. They don't drink alcohol, they are not openly gay, they don't eat porc, they don't have romantic relationships with non Muslims but that's nothing against others. They respect non Muslims have a different idea about these things so there is tolerance. The very first group the open well educated Muslims put their Muslim background on a less important level and are philosophically more connected to for instance Albert Camus. And have a less rigorous explanation of Islam. This group fully integrates in the French traditions. Now I originally come from Rotterdam. We have the best mayor of the world (officially). He was born in Morocco and he is a Muslim like the middle group. Although I don't think he would be against mixed marriage. This guy took every chance the Netherlands was offering him to become the best he can be. He said after some riots with 2nd or 3rd generation Moroccan youth in Rotterdam that if they are not appreciating the Dutch norms and values towards society and towards women in particularly, they better pack their bags and find a place of their liking elsewhere. That was not against Muslims, that was against scum hiding behind "being" Muslim.

From our perspective we also see non-Muslims as Middle Class educated and tolerant, they tend to be friendly and inclusive. Then you have the poor rungs of society of non Muslims, they harbour a lot of hate in their heart because they are poor and have no potential for upward mobility. Then you have the outright anti Muslim activists that make it their duty to ponce money off of big donors and antagonise muslims. Generally speaking, most Muslims want to be integrated in the Middle-CLass camp, but they often have to start from ground 0 on social housing programs with the lower rungs. Countless victims from the Muslim community due to going to school and mixing with the lower rungs. What we are seeing in the UK is upward mobility of Muslims now where a stable middle class is being created, and Muslim middle-class ghettos are forming.

@@strictlyyoutube6881 I agree that anybody with a limited education is more vulnerable for xenophobia. @@joostandhisband9648 That's what they are currently doing in the UK. New developments will only be accepted if 10-20% of the units are for social housing. The Government figured out building huge social housing projects was a social experiment disaster. We will only know how well this housing strategy works in the next 10-20 years when the children and teenagers who now live on those developments turn out. Not sure how it is in the EU, I'm sure it is similar as Racism is the first boss to defeat, the second is class. It goes without saying anyone not white is defacto not upper class, you have to almost outrightly prove you are middle class as a non white.

Because compared to France, the Chinese government is too nice to Muslims. Let me explain why: 1,Uyghurs can earn extra points on the gaokao . 2,Uyghurs can have as many children as possible without restrictions on family planning. 3,Uyghurs often engage in illegal activities (such as stealing, fighting, etc.) with impunity . 4,In order to help Uyghurs out of poverty, the Chinese government every year to the Muslim community into a huge amount of subsidies, and through large tax incentives to attract enterprises to set up local factories. All the accusations circulating in the West about genocide, forced abortions, forced labor are lies. In addition, Uighurs do not have the tradition of wearing veils, they have their own traditional dress, just like kazakhs and Uzbeks. Burqa was introduced to Xinjiang only in the last decade or so along with Islamic extremism. In fact, the ethnic group that is systematically discriminated against in China is Han, the majority ethnic group. You think you have full freedom and democracy, and you are so proud of your "freedom of speech" and "critical thinking", when in fact you are just pathetic people living in a larger information cocoon that can even believe such a simple and crude lie.
