You mean third? Anyways, there's a bit from Half-Blood Prince that could actually be better applied to that: But when Harry arrived downstairs ten minutes later, fully dressed and carrying his empty breakfast tray, it was to find Hermione sitting at the kitchen table in great agitation, while Mrs Weasley tried to lessen her resemblance to half a panda." Pandas are black and white; Hermione would only resemble a panda if the bruise was showing up on white skin. Also, this one early sketch of the Midnight Duel that features Harry, Ron, Neville, Hermione and Dean Thomas. Note how Dean is shaded in, and Hermione is not.
@mysticmama_36923 жыл бұрын
Exactly. I don't care about what skin color the characters are, but putting several descriptions in the book as her being white, and then saying she never specified her race just seems like a bit of crowd pleasing to me. It was clear that Dean was black, and that Hermione could show black bruises on white skin, and had a white face peeking out from behind a tree. She also makes the Patel twins race clear. Seeing as this obsession over race wasn't a thing back in the 90s and early 00s, I think she described the character of Hermione as she meant her to be....white. During the current political climate, it was just easier for her to say Hermione could be black to smooth tensions, despite the descriptions already published in the books SHE wrote many years earlier...She also described the characters to the cover artist for the first book, and Hermione is WHITE on that cover. I think honesty should always be the best policy, and she most definitely was not honest about this.

Obliviate is a very nasty spell which is irreversible. She changed their names and implanted a desire to move to Australia.
@kyleethekelt2 жыл бұрын
Hurray! sensible discourse. Of course, those of us who use the original source, the books, know that the use of 'Obliviate' in this context was both incorrect and sloppy. Here is the relevant quote from Deathly Hallows. "I've also modified my parents' memories so that they're convinced they're really called Wendell and Monica Wilkins, and that their life's ambition is to move to Australia, which they have now done. That's to make it more difficult for Voldemort to track them down and interrogate them about me - or you, because unfortunately, I've told them quite a bit about you." Anyone who has read these books will know that 'Obliviate' is only used to completely wipe someone's memory, as lockart tried to do to the boys in the Chamber of secrets. "... Say goodbye to your memories!" He raised Ron's Spellotaped wand high over his head and yelled, "Obliviate!"" The films are unreliable as anything more than pure entertainment because they contain so many errors.

Since Hermone's my favorite character, I knew all of these things... Except for that last one. Even though I haven't truly been a Potterhead for very long. Thank you, HP Wiki, Books, here I come. Two things though... Firstly, I find it curious that Rowling got the name Hermione from a play of Shakespeare's that had nothing to do with Helen of Troy. Helen's daughter was named Hermione. Secondly, 0:46. It kinda was specified. This from Chapter 6 of Half-Blood Prince: "But when Harry arrived downstairs ten minutes later, fully dressed and carrying his empty breakfast tray, it was to find Hermione sitting at the kitchen table in great agitation, while Mrs Weasley tried to lessen her resemblance to half a panda." There is a problem making Hermione black, unless you change her parents' professions. If they were born at about the same time as Molly and Arthur Weasley - in the movies they appear to be around the same age - then becoming new student dentists in 1968 who are black, would have been a big problem it being the time of tremendous protests worldwide. Black families were not commonly well off financially. I can imagine a struggle to consistently find the fees and scholarships, then to succeed in a dental business would have been a tremendous effort, racism being what it was and is. The wizarding world doesn't have the same problems, but a black Hermione would not enter unscathed from the muggle world. I have no desire to see the play; I wonder if the playwrights addressed this question. What should have changed in the characterisation? How would this have affected the relationships between Hermione and her best friends? Think about it

1: Not to contradict J.K. Rowling, but there is VERY STRONG evidence that Hermione IS White. Two from the books and the third from a concept image for PS/SS of the Midnight Duel. Where Dean Thomas has darker skin and is specifically mentioned to be black in the book. The two from the books are her 'White' face in POA and her Black Eye from HBP causing her to look like a Panda. You can't look like a Panda and have black skin. You can't even get a true 'Black' Eye with Black skin. This is the cause of my problems with the casting, not racism. Of course, that's only the start of my problems with Cursed Child. 2: Knew it. 3: Knew it. 4: Kinda knew that. 5: Fair enough. 6: You can tell that by her Boggart exam in Third year. So not unknown. 7: Interesting. 8: Kinda a cheat, it's mentioned. 9: Knew that as I study the story. 10: Debatable. 11: ALL the girls were attracted to Lockhart. 12: Meh. 13: Fascinating. 14: I knew most of it. 15: Interesting. But some of it I knew. 16: Yeah... 17: Because putting yourself in the stories is egotistical. 18: Well, yeah. 19: Yeah. 20: Yeah.

Actually, Hermione is specified as being white in the books. When Harry is rescuing Buckbeak the hippogriff, he sees "Hermione's white face" sticking out from behind a tree mouthing at him to hurry. The Yule Ball was the first time Hermione's character came undone. She had not been a Mary Sue up until then, but going out with Krum was definitely a Mary Sueish thing. The dull and shrewish author self-insert getting the attention of an older sports star? Definitely the kind of thing that happens to a Mary Sue. What surprised me most about Hermione? That her Patronus was an otter. I can't imagine a less otter-like personality than Hermione's.

I thought it's pretty known that the Sorting Hat consideres the person's wishes regarding what house he puts them in. If someone absolutely do not want to go in one particular house, he/she doesn't have to. So it's no wonder that Hermione was sorted into Gryffindor, when she has a lot of Rawnclaw traits as well. She probably didn't want to go to Rawenclaw, what the Hat sensed and put her into Gryffindior instead. Like the Hats first instinct also was to put Harry into Slytherin, but Harry absolutely didn't want to go to there, so he was sorted into Gryffindor.

JK Rowling spits on her own creation. Hermione in her book was a white girl ( with white face). If she thinks that changing the look of main character is the way to fight racism then she is wrong. If Hermione in the book was described as girl with black or red face I would have accepted that because it doesn't make difference for me what is the color of someone's skin. And again in that case I would have expected Hermione in the movie to be also a girl of the same color like in the book. If JK Rowling will continue like then one day we may hear from her that Dean is actually transvestite and Luna is lesbian or Harry feels he is a boy in the morning and girl in the evening. Can you imagine main character in "Othello" by William Shakespeare be rewritten by author because Moors in opera are not trendy anymore and be replaced by Inuk because support of Inuit is all of sudden politically correct? Would you accept all the slave characters in "Amistad " movie played by white people because in a history of mankind some white people were also slaves (the name of Slavic people is derived from the fact that they were victim of slavery quite often) ?
