What You DON'T Know About Wood Opal (Opalized Wood)

In this chapter, I go through the top five types of opalized wood, also known as wood opal. Wood becomes opalized when it occurs in places where opal normally forms. The most common types are Australian wood opal, Ethiopian wood opal, Mexican wood opal, Indonesian wood opal and Wood opal from the US -- Virgin Valley Nevada.

Holy cow! I've been blindsided by two videos in a row right at the end now!!! First Justin whips out a 2 minute opal rap and now I'm a giveaway winner?! Viewers were sending me random congrats messages but I had no idea what was going on! Wood opal is such interesting stuff, maybe not as cool as a fossilized shell but pretty close. Huge chunks of good info throughout the video as per usual I actually learnt a bunch of things I now have to chase up.

I found sparkly rocks in the school yard in 1st grade. It was granite, which was used in building the school. There are NO rocks in New Orleans (really - only mud)

Congrats! I'm still obsessed and as I got older I was able to label and identify many of the rocks I owned instead of just having shelves upon shelves in my room of unmarked mystery stones. These stones might just be my favorite I've seen in all the videos. I mean just look at those Indonesian wood opals! Wow! This is one of your best videos ever! As a Nevadan, I was hoping that Virgin Valley opal would make it into your list but I didn't think it would be number one. 🎉. Thanks for educating us about the stability of opal "conk" wood for jewelry. My wife and I visited an opal mine in Virgin Valley this past July (the Royal Peacock) and I bought some common opal from their store which is fluorescent in UV light and glows yellowish green. Then I tested some other wood opal limb casts I have from central Nevada and was excited to see them fluorescence yellow-green as well. I haven't cut any wood opal yet for cabochons, but it's on my to-do list. It has no iridescence but it's still an attractive rock and will be good to practice my cutting and polishing. I think you should start another channel and maybe focus on fossils and rocks other than opal. Heck we'll watch even if its just your cats, Zuck, and Sheila! 👍

@@PulitzerOpal Don. No, We have yet to dig at any of the Virgin Valley mines. We always seem to visit that part of Humboldt County in the middle of summer and my wife can't handle the bright sun and heat for hours on end like I can. We would have to plan a trip there in early Fall and set up a shade tent and sieves to sort through a purchased scoop of ore. Maybe next year.

The play of color in opals is typically caused by the diffraction of light as it passes through microscopic silica spheres within the opal. The size and arrangement of these spheres affect the colors you see. For opalized wood to display flash or play of color, it often depends on the quality of the opal, the arrangement of the silica spheres, and the thickness of the opal layer. Opals with a well-ordered structure of spheres that are relatively uniform in size tend to display more vivid flashes of color. Additionally, the angle of the light source and the observer can also influence the appearance of play of color in opals. Keep in mind that opal mining and collecting can be both a science and an art, and each piece of opal is unique. Continue your exploration and digging in Utah, and you may come across even more stunning opal specimens in the future!

I recently saw a video of a man who crafts D20 dices out of gemstones, and he did one with synthetic opal. It's hard to imagine something so rare and beautiful being used on something so childish, but the mind does wander. We all just want pretty stones to admire and play with.
