I had scheduled my Z730M with 50 hours to be taken to the shop because the steering wasn’t working well. This video was randomly on my feed and I’m glad I decided to watch it. Because these are air cooled engines, you forgot an important part. The service manuals say to remove engine shroud once a year a check engine and cooling fins for dirt, oil, grass, and debris, and clean as necessary. Some of the engines that come in are packed with debris under the engine shroud. Occasionally, they overheat as a result, and push the valve guides, bend push rods, blow head gaskets, etc. Very important to check!

One thing I've found is the idler pulleys and spindle bearings can be replaced. The idler pulleys, drill out the pop rivets replace the bearing and use bolts and nuts to hold together. That way, if the bearing goes bad much cheaper to replace the bearings. Same with the spindle, the bearings are fairly easy to change, much cheaper than an entire spindle.

Thanks! Any general purpose grease is fine. On the 900 Ztraks Id recommend greasing the spindles about every 10 hours of use. About 10 pumps with a full size grease gun. I normally try to sense when I feel a little bit of resistance then stop. You dont want to blow the seals out of the housing

Great video. Very well done. Can you offer any help with a Z740R fuel pick up issue? Apparently have some debris in pick line and not sure how to get to it. Thanks
@Mechanical_Mind Жыл бұрын
Thanks Wayne. Id use compressed air but use caution not to use too much pressure. It you dont have an air compressor you might have to remove the line completely then use a water hose with a high pressure nozzel. Then obviously remove all the water before reinstalling. WD40 works well in helping remove the lines and clamps etc. Plus it displaces water and will not damage rubber or plastic. (Fun fact the WD stands for water displacement)
@waynebehm7853 Жыл бұрын
@Mechanical Mind I have used an air compressor which helps but only until more debris gets into pick up tube. I would like to remove pick up tube and maybe modify by adding a pick filter on the end. My problem is I cannot figure out how to remove the pick up tube. Kind of a weird cap/connector were it enters tank. Dealer supposedly pulled entire tank out last year and obviously did not get all debris out of tank. I had taken it in thinking Issue may have been the duel pump. I did not want to go beyond changing fuel filter at the the as mower is still under warranty. I ended up having to pay them for tank removal, reinstall and supposed cleaning of tank and lines. Not a cheap venture. Do you know more about possible pick up tube removal as mentioned above? Thanks Again your videos are really well done.

@@waynebehm7853 Im not familiar with the Z700s but if the pick up tube is similar to the 900s I have to use 3 small screw drivers at the same time to carefully pry back the clips that snap and lock down on the tank connection. The z900s have a metal screen filter in the end of the pick up tube. Not sure if yours does or not. If you send me your mowers PIN number I can look up and see how its made. Id also check the gas cap to make sure its seal or o-ring is still there. That is a very common way dirt gets into these fuel tanks.

Hey Ian, with a mauanl pump grease gun you can feel the resistance on the pump lever increase when the housing is full. Try not to apply too much where it comes out of the seals. I normally just do about 12 pumps with a large grease gun. If you hear it coming out stop pumping.

@Mechanical_Mind2 жыл бұрын
Hi Richard. Sorry for the delayed replay. I just saw your comment. Im not sure why I get notified about some comments but not others. Did you get the clutch off? The first thing I try is tightening and loosing the clutch bolt with my impact a few times. Next I try tapping it with a hammer. Some models have a hole in the frame where I can use a punch or bolt to help tap on it in the downward direction. Next is a puller. If you dont have a puller you can remove the engine mount bolts and use a jack to push the crankshaft up using a socket to push the crankshaft but not the clutch. That is inly for extreme cases and extreme care and caution must be used.

@Mechanical_Mind2 жыл бұрын
It sounds like a fuel issue. First Id check the fuel pump is working. Remove the hose going from the pump to the carb. Turn the engine over with key and starter. Fuel should be coming out of the pump when the engine is turning over. If no gas change the fuel pump but first comfrim there is no kinked or clogged fuel line going to the carb. If there is gas coming out of the fuel pump then confrim that the fuel shutoff solenoid on the carb is working. When the key/ ignition is turned on you should hear a slight click by the carb or you can feel it click with your hand. Its the thing that has two wires going to the bottom of the carb. If have other videos covering these things on other mower but basically the same thing on your mower.

@Mechanical_Mind2 жыл бұрын
I recommend keeping everything as clean as possible. Keep water out of the ignition switch and dont blast electrical connections. If you get water in electrical connections use WD40 to get the water out. WD stands for "water displacement". Its safe for electrical connections and will not hurt anything on the mower, not even the paint. If you have compressed air that will help but wd40 is better to displace water. You can even spray it in your starter motor and Id recommend doing that occasionally to keep the inside clean and lubricated.

Oh man, I'm working on a 997 PTO issue now, this is great news and not so great news....
@Mechanical_Mind10 ай бұрын
Luckily the 997 doesn't have the same type of anti-rotation issue like the lower gasoline 900 series. The 997 is a tank!

@@Shoebilly_Blades both issues happened at the same time?

We got the more with both issues already existing. Steering is fine, pot does nothing when button engaged and deck doesn’t go up or down

any idea how to replace a 997 deck belt ?
@Mechanical_Mind Жыл бұрын
Its a harder process. If I remember correctly you need loosen up that pulley on the right side of deck and slip the belt under that pulley. I dont have a video on it yet. Im not even sure if we have a 997 at the dealership right now.

rent the spindle bearings all sealed bearings, that's what i found on my Z910A

I got a quick question my new deck belt on my 930m vibrates bad I replaced the big idler pulley. My spindles seem to be fine with no play. My new extension spring seems to be to long my old one was adjustable. I’m not sure what the problem is. Thanks

Have you checked the tensioner arm bearings?
@Gsxrtrix2 жыл бұрын
I have a brand new scag walk behind 52. Does the same thing it seems. It vibrates differently at different motor speeds. Has so be a balance issue/belt/pulley tolerance but hate to start playing with it. Just kind of accept it for now but interesting that you’re experiencing the same.
@Mechanical_Mind2 жыл бұрын
@@Gsxrtrix Take the deck belt loose and spin each spindle and pulley to check if any have bad bearings. Check to see is any of the blades can be wobbled up and down. Check to see if an of the tensioner arm can be moved up and down. Also you may have unbalanced bladeds.

@@Mechanical_Mind Will do! I appreciate the response and help!!! 🙏🏼 It’s brand new with 1.7 hours on it. Just feels a tad off. Apparently they did a pre delivery check but sloppy can happen.

@@Gsxrtrix Yeah its common for us to see and need to correct mistakes on brand new units. Lose bolts, improperly ran hoses etc

How do you change the cooling fan on a z425
@Mechanical_Mind2 жыл бұрын
Hey Bucky, to change the fans on top of the hyrdos you practically have to drop the hydros down to point of nearly removing it. If your talking about the engine fan that is a much easier job. But you have to remove all the engine's shrouding to do it.
