Gramatica ativas and gramatica aplicadas are good for learning the grammer. But for speaking and communication I used aprender portugese and Portugues XXI. Português XXI is great book.

I take it you're starting out learning Portuguese! ter is the infinitive form, which in English corresponds to the form of verbs with to: to have, in this case. In Portuguese, like with the other Romance languages, the form of the verb changes the word ending according to the tense and the person. Think about how verb forms are different in English when it's he or she versus I or you: I have, you have, but he or she has. Which one you use depends on how you're using the verb!
