The fear of the blank canvas, I could never quite put that into words until hearing you talk about it. I'm trying to learn sketching after virtually a 25 year hiatus of trying at all and learning.

Set a schedule for yourself each day and a little bit of that fear will be erased. It compounds, too.

"The stuff that we draw reflects what we think in life"... Me looking at my bug-a-saurus sketch
@CHUNKYNUGGET66626 күн бұрын
I have hundreds of sketch books in all sizes! It shows I had promise but was always scared of pushing my boundaries. My sketch books are full of drawings, writings and inventions, believe it or not😅 I’m kinda arty in everything I do, it’s just my life now! I feel it’s a gift, it helps me in so many ways! I look at it as being able to imagine my way out of problems, and I do🙏

I often draw anatomy and people, emotions, or abstract dream stuff I think its fun to bring something to life that doesn't exist or to recreate likeness hard lesson I had to learn is to the forms matter more than the detail lot more fun too
@ExcooseMwah27 күн бұрын
If there's one thing I need to fill my sketchbooks with, it's certainly my dreams. I do it sometimes though I don't currently have a dedicated sketchbook for it, I look at dreams as kind of being pure or raw creativity with how it can be almost random but vivid. It's also kind of tricky to capture a dream on paper and you usually have to do it very quickly when you wake up, they are very vivid but elusive at the same time. I also find that even if I'm able to draw it, my sketches are sometimes missing this hard to describe third aspect of lucidity. It's a certain feeling dreams have that I'm not sure how to replicate. It does also tie into my interest in wanting to do environments and landscapes, but ironically I draw a lot of characters instead, I guess characters are a lot more of a familiar and comforting as a process for me than landscapes, so I tend to resort to it when I want to draw for fun, but I actually do, ironically as an indoorsy person, have a big interest in environments.

As usual, another crucial lesson/explanation on how to improve one’s artistic ontology. This time more in the realm of psychology. OCD is a pathological trait I also struggle with. Thank you Mr. Rebholz, you’re very helpful. I suppose I rediscovered a few things about myself with this one in relation to my sketchbooks. God bless you.

Your videos have been a massive help and inspiration for me Bobby! Thank you for sharing your experience and tips. As an artist who's had a year of struggling and art identity crises in my last uni year, i can proudly say that your input has helped me change my mindset on my art and create a healthier space. I enjoy creating again and strife to improve. As much as i adore your traditional works, i was wondering if you'd ever make a video showing your digital process? I've recently been getting into a mix of painting and photobashing digitally and i've never had so much fun working with different textures! I'd love to hear your thoughts when you create digital work.

The funniest thing about you Bobby, is that all the creatures have very logical functions. Those ears and eyes have to work in reality😄

One of the reasons that creates anxiety is the thought of someone seeing my art and interpreting it in a way that I never intended. Hard to say that the way I mean it. It's like looking at Dali or VanGogh and seeing only the negative and not the positive of it.

I think sketchbook can honestly be anything...Some sketches are loose, some sketches are more refined, some sketches are full on renderings, which is okay. Some people take the word too literally and think sketchbooks are ONLY supposed to be loose scratches on every page, and they start impeding on an individuals process because that's not what they want. Those same people usually happen to be the ones that don't want us drawing creatures and demons heh.

Have you ever used or considered using a lead holder for drawing, and if so what do you think about them? If not but you end up wanting to try one I recommend the faber-castell TK9400. Also, why is your work always so flippin cool. I am definitely trying my best to reach this kind of confidence/ professionalism in my drawing. P.S. Here's a fun fact for anybody that cares. Any hoofed animal is called an ungulate. Sorry for blabbing on, but I enjoy your videos and really want to "investigate" your style. (Edit) - I just realized how much this creature looks like a deer, elk, red stag, and I feel like if this creature had a hunting season on another planet, the legality of the harvest would be determined in how long his proboscises would be. Like an point restriction on the antlers on deer and elk.

Lol, mine is all over the place but one thing I've noticed is that I almost always mirror the emotion I'm feeling regardless of the expression on the referenced face.. I can also look back and see what it was about a sketch that was bugging me. Currently the profile view is killing me... Noses are bizarre and eyes viewed from the side are a bit creepy.😂

Reminds me of a story Hap Henriksen told me years ago , he was a fellow sculptor that used to work for the same company i did. His speciality was wizards and dragons and he said that in the small town he lived in people actually crossed the road so as not to get close to him because in their eyes he sculpted evil hehe Its a mad world eh? :)

I’m loving this piece! May I ask? Do you have the creatures gestures and pose in mind before it’s actually sketched out? I imagine this creature is already designed and drawn. If you know the creature well enough I know creating movement gesture etc is easier. Otherwise I personally find it harder to create without a presketch. One off creatures I can roll with creating as I go although I like a generalised pre-sketch most the time.. cheers mate👍

If someone is trying to look out for you by telling you to not draw something they truly believe is going to bring trouble to you, and they are actually worried for your health so they leave a reasonable comment That’s 1 thing… but if someone is just being a asshole by telling you are going to hell and trying to force you to believe what they believe then I can see it being annoying as hell.. or when people advertise their religion without even commenting on the actual topic of the video.
