This channel has revitalized my capacity for drawing. While I had the drive for it, I restricted, and held myself back from making anything 'too messy' or difficult. I really hope this helps everyone else as much as it did for me!

Hey bobby, I wanted to say that your content is amazing and feels illegal to watch for free, your videos made me realize i was caring more about the result than the process of drawing. This made me enjoy drawing more although iam not there yet, iam working my way thru to get to that point. Also could you please make more videos on worldbuilding? I am working on a sci-fi/ fantasy world and stuggling with coming up with ideas and designs. Its fine if you are busy with other stuff tho, i enjoy every video u post. Never stop !

Hello hope you are doing well cozmonova. I just want to corroborate your comment by saying that I too had the same problem in which I was unduly concerned with the result instead of appreciating the process of drawing. It’s the process with a calm level-headedness that takes one a long way.

5:49 I think the "Plants as Reference" works that well with insects because there is a good amount, that is going for that exact look. E.g. that walking leaves in Australia or Asia. Or the Orchid Mantis, the ones that look like little tree brances.

+1 for trying to over-correct a basic sketch. I do this all the time. I always have to force myself not to try to rush on from the thumbnail sketch, especially if I come up with something I get really excited about. But it's always worth the time to slow down, and really just focus on the loose imperfection of thumbnail for sketches.

And Protip from doing some illustration/ creature design for RPGs over the years: don't show clients designs that YOU don't want to work on, because they often pick the worst things ever.

Honestly, having a great immune system is nothing you should feel proud of as it isn't an achievement. You should be grateful for it. I went to school taking antibiotics, having high fevers and being in so much pain I was shaking and silently crying trying not to attract an attention. I was doing my utmost to get my attendance up. I aced all classes and had full marks in all tests despite spending weeks on end in hospital going to school against all doctors advice. And still in the end I could not get my college degree despite having full marks in 13 subjects because I did not have enough attendance. I was so devastated!,I pushed mysekf so hard. Now I have been chronically ill, crippled and bedridden for 13 years.I still give my best. Health isn't an achievement it's a blessing and gift.

Hi Bobby, love the videos. Could you ever do an explainer on how to approach thumbnailing when you have a brief in-mind, i.e. this creature has to have certain features? I'm finding this automatic drawing process very helpful for ideating 'random' ideas, creatures, shapes, but struggle when I want to iterate off an established idea.

Sup Bobby?! So aren't those in the beginning sketches, rather than thumbnails? If i recall learning from you correctly, starting with filled black solids as the thumbnails, then these sketches come after. Do you categorize them as 2 different approaches of thumbnailing (e.g. basic vs advanced)? Thanks!
@bobbyrebholz21832 ай бұрын
No. Thumbnails ARE the beginning stages. You could do black silhouettes if you want.

dude im a 14 year old striving to become an artist please could you tell me how to deal with burnout i was drawing like hell for 4 months drawing always but suddenly i have no will to draw for 2 months but im slowly getting into it back . could you please tell me what can i do to solve it
@mysteryman87872 ай бұрын
Mannnn you too, huh? I have some pretty intense burnout too but I think of a few things to stop it. 1. Why did you begin drawing? Obvious, but just think on why. You began because likely that reason is something YOU want to do. Did you want to draw comic, for example? Well, what comics do you like? Instead of just basic practices like drawing boxes, try drawing panels and scenes instead. 2. Just enjoy the process. I used to feel this piece of advice doesn't help, because "I am here because I am clearly NOT enjoying the process". But there's another way to look at it: do you like watching other people draw? What about their process soothes your mind. Just focus on those aspects of drawing as you draw. I find hatching and refinement satisfying, so instead of focusing on the result, I focus on the statisfaction of doing the little things like making a stroke on the page. 3. Get a little uncomfortable. Chances are, you may have developed a habit of drawing things a particular way OR drawing a few particular things, and you're getting bored. Either way, you should try something new and dip your toes into something interesting and untried. 4. Look at pieces YOU are proud of making. Just look at what you've drawn, and just look at the ones that interest you. Don't say none of them do, at least one of the many drawing should stick out to you and look you'd want it to. Maybe even look at it for a while, just admiring the simple things about it. 5. Doodle. Just doodle sometimes, not everything needs to be perfect or conscious. If you're new, you may be practicing the fundamentals... but if you ONLY draw fundamentals, then it'll likely diminish your enjoyment of drawing. That goes for learning anything in drawing, even besides the fundamentals. You may begin studying anatomy or a specific subject like animals, but if you're just drawing to study, of course it won't be fun. Just apply the fundamentals you've learned to even the smaller things you work on. 6. Focus on your negative and positive thoughts. This is really important. Your negative thoughts about your drawing can impede your drawing process, but it can also improve them. Instead of thinking "I hate the look on this face, it looks so cringe, yada yada yada", think, "The face looks off, what about it looks off? What do I need to focus on when I draw the next?". But I am just a hobbyist, so take it with a grain of salt, but here are methods I've personally discovered and I hope works for you!

what do you mean they didn't care what it looked like, they just cared about the idea? You're saying the technique paves way for the idea to manifest? Or without technique, there is no idea?

It just means that if you just allow yourself to draw without worrying about an outcome(in the beginning stages) then your mind is more free to create new shapes.
