the absolute most most tragic death in marvel comics history? a little girl. in the short story "Leah," a comic by Peter David and Colleen Doran, no powers, no secret identity, she was just a little girl who idolized spiderman.damn it, now i'm crying. her name was Leah, a little homeless girl who lived in a cardboard box in a dirty ally. she is in a coma, dying, her organs failing when spiderman finds her, it's to late all the doctors can do is make her comfortable and watch her die but we see in her fever dream her fondest wish was to be rescued by her hero spiderman www.dorkly.com/post/77616/uplifting-superhero-comics/page:2

in the comics of spiderman there is the original story that inspired this one: "the kid who collects spider-man"... in the end of the story we find out he has cancer and only have a couple of weeks left...heartbreaking.
@megazwatcher8 жыл бұрын
Swift Swalow and you know what is the most heartbreaking about these stories? they could be prevented! spiderman knows the smartest people in the world, as well as magic users, powerful healers and psionics, heck even a fet cosmic power beings. why not put them in stasis and let reed richards, hank mccoy and DOCTOR strange cure them? for thatmatter, why hasn"t mr. fantastic cured cancer?
@swiftswalow8 жыл бұрын
megazwatcher for what i heard the magic users are reluctant to helping with "mundane diseases" they don't want to alter the physical world or anyone in it unless it's 100% necessary, it's not so easy for them to decide who lives and who dies, so they'd rather not have a part on this subjects in any way. the cosmic beings aren't available 24/7 and spidey in that time had no way to contact with most of the other heroes in the hero community, he was merely starting his superhero career. reed Richards is a scientist, not a medic, he studied biology, but he is not sure even today if he could cure a desease. Mccoy is similar to this he is a biologist, not a medic, plus i don't know if spidey knew him in that point.... but yeah, i bet spidey could've found SOMEONE to help.
@alexman3788 жыл бұрын
I personally think Spiderman's sickness and death in "The Other" was the most tragic thing I've ever seen in comics. Rarely is a superhero death so built up, and he didn't die in honor exactly, he was fighting a much much stronger guy who ate his eye, beat him until he was unrecognizable and left him in a semi-commatose state. You can argue that he found some secret spider powers and defeated him in the end, but he still died in the arms of Mary Jane all bandadged up. I don't think I've ever actually cried over drawn pictures of fictional characters, but that was the one exception.

Two words. Silver Surfer. He dies of a cancer-like disease which eats away at his protective skin. He uses the Power Cosmic to send a burst of energy, which triggers apathy in all people on Earth, as a final gift, as the guy was just as friggin noble on his deathbed as he was a living mofo. Dr. Doom, Uatu, the Waatcher, Mr. Fantastic, Dr. Strange, almost all of the 'Marvel Geniuses", good or evil, try, but fail to save him, and that includes a heartfelt Galactus. He eventually travels back to his home planet of Zen-La, and dies after seeing his beloved Shalla-Bal one last time.... Or did Marvel bring HIM back to life and I missed the memo?

Uncle Ben, Bucky Barnes & Gwen Stacey. All three have in recent years, returned from the grave. 3. Yes, Uncle Ben DID come back. 4. It's not a mystery, Spidey killed Gwen by accident while trying to save her. 5. The most tragic death is The Fantastic Four, at the hands of FOX & that awful movie. +Tungus Grump ... the first one... in 1976? When pretty much the majority commenting on here wasn't even alive (let alone had read an X-men comic), only for her to be resurrected like.. immediately? Who was upset over that? Or the 2nd time in 1980... (see above for age range demographics)? By the time she died twice in 1991, it had already become a recurring theme that nobody thought she wouldn't be coming back already as she's now expected to die (which she did and died again in 1995... twice in 2003... twice in 2005... I mean come on)
@helzapoppin98108 жыл бұрын
John West IV Yeah in 1980 fans threw a fit, as did a couple of people who actually worked on the book. And yes, I was quite alive and reading comics in 1980. And while it was only a few yrs until Byrne came up with a workable retcon to bring her back in Fantastic Four, it felt like an eternity. She may not have been any great shakes in 1976, but by 1980 she was second only to Wolverine in popularity. Just because there was no internet in 1980 doesn't mean people weren't pissed. The world does not revolve around Millennials. Thank god.

Is the criteria behind your request that they are dead now, or that they only died one time in their entire publication history? It would definitely be hard, if not impossible, to satisfy the second one, but you ask for "permanent" deaths in your original post. There is no way to know which deaths are permanent, because any death can be overturned in comics (they just get worse and worse with every retcon), but the best we can do is assume current deaths are permanent until shown otherwise. In that case, there are a lot of characters that are dead right now and megazwatcher gave a good list.

At the end him and Cluster take Psylocke to meet his Mother and Psylocke says "is this real?" and he says "maybe. Is anything? What do I know?" and it's super sad for me bc I think he's misdirecting himself to think his mother is there living alone in the French alps and is always happy to see him.

It's recognised, in canon that Spidey killed Gwen (though had he done nothing, she'd still die). For starters when Green Goblin did literally the exact ame thing to Mary Jane, Spidey saved her by using multiple webs, this time spreading the impact of suddenly stopping out through her whole body. Also in Civil War Tony uses Spiderman breaking Gwen's neck as an example of why superheroes to register and be trained. Had Spiderman more experience/training he could have saved Gwen. That's one of the key things about Spiderman, he's young and imperfect.

Ben survives and Peter never learns the power/responsibility bit and he ends up using his power to become a professional wrestler, action hero, and celebrity. J.J. Jameson's son dies in a space shuttle crash and blames Spider-Man because he had the power to help but did nothing.

You forgot about Captain Marvel's son, Genis-Vell. Just getting over his insanity and using his cosmic awareness correctly for the first time in order to live up to his father's name, he came to the Thunderbolts to redeem his name. During the same issue, he's injured (thought dead) and to try and save him, Zemo fuses his nega-bands into him. They have a weird effect and he's slowly destroying the universe - so they split his body apart and left him in the Darkforce Dimension. A statue for him was made next to his father's.

Totally missed Captain Jean DeWolff, a supporting character in Spider-Man, who occasionally had the possibility, never realized, of becoming a romantic interest, and who was brutally slain by the first Sin-Eater, who was also one of her fellow officers. It was one of those occasions that had Spidey flashing back to Gwen's death, and he quite nearly killed Sin-Eater in the middle of the street with his bare hands. Also, Kraven's Last Hunt, which took one of the campiest villains in all of Spider-Man's Rogues' Gallery, made him a completely sympathetic and utter bad-ass, then had him commit suicide at the height of his triumph over Spidey. It was amazing, moving and utterly tragic.

Not a bad list. A couple details details I want to add: Victoria Hand started off as a sort of villian (Dark Avenger), while Daniel Drumm is fundementally a hero. In the story where Victoria Hand died, Daniel Drumm blamed the Avengers for the death of his twin, Jericho Drumm (aka Brother Voodoo), so he attacked the Avengers. As for Colossus, he sacrificed his life to activate the Legacy Virus cure partly because his younger sister Illiyana (aka Magick) died from the virus (which was also quite a tragic moment as well). Karen Page didn't really have AIDS, it was part of a plot by Mysterio to mess with Matt Murdock. This one isn't on the list, but there was an issue of Fantastic Four (#285), where a young kid named Tommy Hanson set himself on fire and died because he wanted to be like his favourite hero, Johnny Storm (Human Torch).

Good vid, however a small factoid, Jean grey has only died twice. A lot of people get this wrong, saying that she's been revived multiple times, but this is untrue. Jean's "ultimate sacrifice", was not Jean, but the Phoenix Force, believing itself to be Jean Grey (due to the memories it took from her, while Jean herself was healing in a cocoon at the bottom of the sea). The character (as per her fictional timeline) has died twice. Once in New X-Men #149, by Wolverine gutting her in order to spare her from getting incinerated by the sun. Then in the next issue New X-Men #150 that character reaches her permanent demise at the hands of "Magneto" by being given a "planetary scale stroke". The character has remained dead ever since until the Marvel Now event, where a time displaced younger version of Jean is brought to the present.

I believe it was in fact a snap of the neck as the situation is somehow re-enacted with another girl (Mary Jane I think?). And this time Spider-man takes that into account and uses multiple web lines to secure the head, arms and legs to ensure there is no snap-back.

How about.. Nightcrawler? Ya know, he sacrificed himself so that Hope Summers could live

Death of Ultimate Spider-man was tragic in my opinion . Peter's last words to aunt may 'I did it' 'I saved you' 'I couldn't save uncle ben' 'but i saved you' It's not accurate but it was something like that .

I will state although definitely not worthy in this top 10 list, but an honorable mention at best was Eric Masterson - Thunderstrike. He was a decent hero at the time. He definitely had quite a few fans that liked him. As it was perhaps understood also, Marvel most likely had to end his title due to lack of strong sales.

one of the really sad deaths for me was Deadpool, I know he was almost instantly resurrected in the whole anad run but when he was on that boat with his family hugging his daughter as the entire world was destroyed, that shit was sad

Meh. Wasn't his first, won't be his last. Besides he was replaced by Old Man Logan, who's exact copy of classic Wolverine, but older.

Ultimate Spiderman: Death of Spiderman really hit me. Granted the Ultimate Universe has a lot of deaths which are tend to be permanent (Ultimatum) I reread that Ultimate Spiderman arc every time I need to feel emotion. Another tragic death would be Copycat in the old Deadpool comic. Poor poor Deadpool.

I for one found the death of Nightcrawler in X-men's Second Coming series as a major heartbreak. Then there is Mimic's death from the EXiles comic series. There was also Johnny Storm aka The Human Torch. We all thought he died and that alone was a shocker given it's the Fantastic Four and nobody from that team is ever suppose to die.

How could you forget Pietr's sister-Illyana? She was Kitty Prides BFF, then was transformed back to a child, caught the nasty disease for mutants only and died-it was a terrible loss! Surprised I didn't see it here

Victoria Hand? Really? She was Norman Osborn's right-hand woman during the Dark Reign storyline. Spidey didn't throw Gwen over a bridge but his inexperience contributed to her death. Jean's recent death was also sad.

what bothers me about the movie winter soldier is that it is bucky but in the comics cap uses the cosmic cube (a device that can do anything) make him remember he is bucky. this meant until the movie came out they could always retcon it. they could always say its not bucky cap forced a guy who kind of looked like bucky to remember what he thought bucky was

superman's self-sacrificial death was sad, and spidey did have a similar death (even if it was corrected almost immediately via time travel). Though I think that Spider-man's death is made a little more brutal because he went into the fight with the foreknowledge that it would be his last. I am of course referencing the edge of time video game, not sure if its official canon or self-contained, but I enjoyed it.
