Blue Beetle being shot in the head did set up Wonder Woman snapping Max Lord's neck. That's a moment I'd like to see in the DCCU. I wonder how different comics would be if Superman had actually stayed dead?
@TheDarkAdventure8 жыл бұрын
It's more likely to happen in the CW verse. They've already introduced Maxwell Lord and all they'd need to do is introduce blue beetle and wonder woman, or give Wonder Woman's part to Superigrl
@hubrism48618 жыл бұрын
I preffered Lord as Giffen created him. It still bugs me to see him as an outright villain.
@Painocus7 жыл бұрын
I'd not. Not only did it completely retcon, ruin and kill (literally and figuratively) Lord as a character, it was one of the most out-of-character moments in Wonder Woman's history and yet hack-writers still bring it up to justify writing her as an utter jerk. I'd prefer if we could all just slowly forget that ever happened.
@jliller7 жыл бұрын
As a casual comics fan I had never of Maxwell Lord before the OMAC storyline. Also, how is it out-of-character? I thought one of the biggest differences between Wonder Woman and Superman & Batman is that, unlike the two of them, she was a warrior before she was a superhero and is willing to kill when necessary (see also Captain America)? And frankly I think Max Lord, as depicted in that story arc, deserved to have his his neck snapped. It only became a huge deal because Brother Eye broadcast it out of context to the world.
@Painocus7 жыл бұрын
Lord was a good guy that they just retconed to have been secretly evil all a long. Expect Wonder Woman wasn't. She was the one who had a no-killing code since all the way back when Superman blew up planes and Batman shot people. That's why she used the lasso and mostly refused to use swords, so she could detain her enemies without killing them. The whole "following a strong moral code to be an ideal for others" was originally her deal, before they had Superman and Batman copy it. This is the comic that retconed in that she kills mortals even if it results in how she had been acting up to that point making no sense. It wouldn't be too bad if it was presented as she breaking her code in desperation and the heat of the moment (although if killing him works so should just knocking him unconscious). The biggest problem was that she started acting completely out of character afterwards, like she had always wanted to just kill everyone and the Justice League was the ones "keeping her down". Ultimately leading to her talking about how people who can't save themselves deserve to die and such in the New52 (which raises the question of why she is a Superhero in the first place). And she wasn't a warrior before she was a superhero. The Amazons hadn't been at war for thousands of years. They had warrior training, but that was for sports and tradition, not because they were actually fighting anyone.

Doesn't make any sense to give Stephanie Brown her own spot, but not Jason Todd. His death has easily been one of the most pivotal moments in Batman's, and therefore DC's, history. It outranks both Stephanie and Damian by a mile. Also, I think better options could have been found in general. Hal Jordan, Oliver Queen, Connor Kent, Silver Age Supergirl honestly could have gotten her own spot as well.

I agree, Jason's death is known as Batman's greatest failure and it affects the way he behaves. He even considered to never have Robin again after Jason's death. Jason Todd's death is THE most important death in Batman's career (except his parents' death of course)

That's why the Earth 1 Supergirl is always so high up on lists like these. She was killed off and then erased from existence and no one knew her, even though her influence was still felt: Barbra Gordon quit being Batgirl. One of my favorite DC storylines is the first two volumes of Booster Gold- 52 Pick-up and The Blue and the Gold. Booster Gold is recruited by Rip Hunter to protect the timeline from alterations, but Booster refuses unless Rip let's him go back in time and save Ted Kord. Rip tries to explain that this is impossible, and even gives Booster an impossible mission (to save Barbara Gordon from the Killing Joke) just to show him that, but Booster is adamant, especially when a time traveling Black Beetle shows up and recruits Booster and the other two Blue Beetles, Jaime Reyes and Dan Garret, to help save Ted. They do succeed in saving Ted, but at great cost to the timeline, and in the end Ted returns voluntarily to die once again. It's a tragic story, but gave Ted's death and Booster's personal sacrifices much more meaning.

Almost everyone gets it wrong with Jason Todd, believing that he was hated by the readers. Hate is a really strong word: he was replacing Dick Grayson at a time where characters weren't supposed to be replaced, grow up, or change. DC took a risk and tried to make him different than Dick, and a lot of readers didn't like the new direction after the Crisis. I loved it though! In the graphic novel intro to, "A Death in the Family", it's explained that the vote to kill Jason was actually rigged by an auto-dialing machine. He only lost due to about 300 votes, which were part of the large number put in by auto-dials. He wasn't liked, true, but people have skewed ideas about how that whole event worked. It was only about 20-30 thousand people who called, (which was a big deal before the internet and social media could spread the word about these things), and the split was almost dead even, (except for the aforementioned rigging.) I actually really liked him as Robin. I was just a kid, (maybe 6 or 7) but I was blown away when he, (may or may *not*) have pushed Phillipe Gonzalez off of a skyscraper in retribution for his multiple acts of terror and rape. It was left very ambiguous, but I loved the risk that took. Batman comics at the time were really good... one of the issues, (I can't remember if it was before or after the Gonzalez incident), was done from the POV of a serial killer, part of a duo called the Dumpster Slashers. It ended with one of his *victims* pulling out a blade while he was trying to force her into a van and slitting his throat, with Batman, Robin, and Commissioner Gordan having to discuss how she'd never be convicted for murder. Legally, it was, "self-defense", despite her obvious baiting of the man as revenge for killing her sister. Robin, (Jason), took her side in the wrap-up panel with Batman having to define to him what lines they can't cross and why, and what justice is and isn't. Jason became our voice as readers posing the questions and placing Batman in a position to have to give solid answers about justice vs. the law. I was pretty hurt when they brought Jason back, and even though I love the costume design they've used on him since Red Hood and the Outlaws, it's always pained me that they didn't let him stay dead. The kid deserved some peace... he lived hard, died hard, and in the end, his death changed comics for me. I love that he made this list... he deserved it.

Barry's death wasn't tragic, it was heroic. He saved the day in his sacrifice. Tragic deaths are like Ted Kord's or, one you didn't mention, Lian Harper's. The daughter of "Arsenal" Roy Harper she was killed off screen by villain Prometheus in one of his attacks on the JLA in the Cry for Justice arc, and haunted Roy in the Rise of Arsenal story line. Unlike most of the other deaths DC was intent of making this one stick and was only recently reversed because of MASSIVE fan outrage. Other Tragic Deaths (Spoilers Below): Sarah Essen, wife of Commissioner Jim Gordon she dies saving a bunch of babies from being killed by the Joker in the No Man's Land storyline. Donna Troy who died in the Titans/Young Justice crossover Graduation Day. She was killed by a rogue Superman android who heatvision'ed her through the heart as she was kicking the crap out of it to keep it from harming anyone else. Superboy Connor Kent who was killed by Superboy Prime in the Infinite Crisis event. Sue Dibney, Elongated Man's wife who was killed by a deranged Jean Loring in the Identity Crisis event. Bart Allen, Grandson of Barry Allen and he 4th Flash, who was killed by the Flash Rogues while having his super-speed sucked out from him. Really you could make a list out of just members of the Titans though...

No mention of Hal Jordan? What made his death especially tragic was the way DC treated his character leading up to his death. He was 1 of the founding members of the JLA & 1 of the greatest DC heroes for the better part of 4 decades, but DC attempted to replace him as the primary GL by having him go insane & turn evil. DC tried to redeem him w/ a hero's death in Final Night, & later tried to explain away the insanity by saying he was possessed by an evil creature, but by then the damage to his image had been done...

The website features a list of female comic book characters who have been injured, killed, or de-powered as a plot device within various superhero comic books, and seeks to analyze why these plot devices are used disproportionately on female characters.

I think the saddest death was when Captain Jean Rorschach disintegrated Bruce Wayne, the nine thousand and first Flash.

Elongated Man's death: yeah the ring part was cruel BUT Raplh did manage to trap Neron in that Tower for.... years so even though he died he outsmarted the villain and protected the world from future issues with him... (and his ghost got to be with his wife)

In Man Of Steel, Supermans dad, most defanantly did not die for no reason. He sacrificed himself for the family pet. And for those of you wondering: Yes. This was the exact moment that Zack Snyder started to suck. Never to recover again.

Jonathan Kent's death in Smallville was by far the worst. We had to trade him for Lana. That was a shit trade.

There should be a second part to this with Nightwing in Injustice: Gods Among Us and Wally West as Kid Flash in Young Justice: Invasion. Although I guess we're talking about the comics. c:

Kyle Rayner was the FIFTH Green Lantern. If your counting Golden age it goes Alan Scott, Hal Jordan, Guy Gardner, John Stewart and then Kyle. You can make an argument for swapping Guy and John around because although Guy appeared first in the 60's as Hal's back up he disappeared into a coma for a decade or so while John came in instead but he still beat Kyle

Honorable mention tho: New 52 superman. Killed moreso for editorial reasons (altho technically agreeable). Killed via more believable means (dna fucked thru absorbtion of every radiation imaginable, once thru kryptonite to restore his powers) but all due to greater ideas to flourish (thru more retcons than you can shake a stick at(kon-els new 52 story, new 52 in general and its failure to actually reboot, the need to have Super sons be a story, the ridiculous idea to keep rebooting superman being finally acknowledged to be ree-diculous). Altho, the Jon Kent-damien wayne dynamic is awesome, i want kon el back bc they just plot-holed him. He's technically still around.
