Funny ol' world, innit? I get the feeling this plot point came from a throwaway line Miller had in a documentary about the "Daredevil" book from the Affleck DD film (which is criminally underrated after a whole bunch of the movie was restored in the director's cut. Miller mentions how he couldn't understand why superheroes wanted to be in romantic relationships w/"normal people". His view? Heroes & villains are hyper-operatic, so it stands to reason their intimate partnerships should be so as well. I wish I could remember the actual quote, but Miller states that enhanced people's "passions" should crack the Earth open. I understood what he meant, but, erm, poor choice of words?

Saying that Sue’s rape and murder in Identity Crisis was nothing more than something to “add maturity” to the story is not only stupid, but also ironically sort of sexist. The entire reason it’s so impactful is not just because it meant that the heroes had to worry about their identities being known, but also because Sue was an innocent that was a friend to and so close with the *entire* JLA. The rape and subsequent memory erasure was meant to further the lack of trustworthiness within the team and add the question of if her murder was as a result of collateral damage from Light’s actions.

I agree it was done to get a rise out the audience, but I disagree that it served no narrative purpose. The Joker had become such a known entity at this point thanks to films and TV that there was a need to remind the comic reading audience just how insanely twisted he really is.

Can someone, preferably Gail Simone, explain why it's "fridging" when it happens to Green Lantern, but iconic when it happens to Batman or Spider-Man? What's wrong with loss of a loved one as motivator?
@cassandracastro27594 жыл бұрын
That was a cheap trick to make a story about the hero going wild. She didn't have any character development beyond being the reason why the hero loses control. That is she only existed to brutally die and give the hero n excuse to go out and "be a hero" and do what heroes.do. Her death was made for the shock value of it. In the case of Spiderman (I'm guessing you're talking about Gwen), she had a good time for development, she was actualy liked by the public, and was the most likely aspect of a future "normal life" for Spiderman. Then she is killed because someone learned his true identity, which means her death is actually painful for the hero and the audience. She wasn't used as an excuse for the hero to act as a hero, her death was a defining factor for Parker's life. Her death was unexpected, but wasn't made for shock value, it happened to shape Spiderman's story, not to give an excuse to the hero for going ot and kill the evil guy. In other words, is not about the death itself, is about the meaning of it. Is wrong to kill a character to just give a reason to another character to act, that relegates her to just a mere tool.

Killing a character is the moment the writer gave up and goes for the cheap shot. It shocks for minutes and has an everlasting stench. Like in the movie "man of steel" where Superman should have find another way to end the conflict with Zod. I don't say never kill but it shouldn't be use as such a recurring narrative tool. D.C's Identity Crisis wasn't better for the rape or death of Sue or the death of Tim Drake's father. It tainted the message of getting close to your loved ones which should have what we took away from the story.
@h8dallas4204 жыл бұрын
so i guess you forgot about how superheros couldn't trust one another after batman didn't want to have Light's mind wiped so the others decided he had to lose his memory too, the book wasn't about what happened to sue and the other families affected or it would have followed up with Ralph and Tim better instead it focused on the distrust the heros have against one another. the end is batman being suspicious of wally west because of his behavior around him. This comes to Batman making Brother Eye which leads to Infinite Crisis. Sue and Jack Drake's deaths meant nothing.

Killing Zod made sense in Man of Steel, taking the fight from the country to a crowded city did not make sense. Superman 2 they killed Zod and his followers by knocking them from a height after they lost their powers so were no longer a threat. Also Superman dropped Lois Lane in first Superman scaring her half to death that version of Superman was a jerk. They showed him save Lois though they did not show anyone saving Zod and his followers in Superman 2.. They are also not mentioned again at the end of the movie.

The rape of Sue in identity Crisis was the perfect counterpoint to the Mental rape of not only Dr. light who is traumatised in to being a simpleton, but also Batman which is why he is outraged when it is revealed what was done to him, the whole story being about violation and abuse of power. Ultimately the revelation of who the murderer of Sue is, sets the story up for redemption and redress, when Atom does the right thing rather than what might, given what has gone before, might seem understandable. As for not being sensitively handled, have you actually read Identity Crisis?

What a lame review, Identity Crisis is incredible and had just as much consequence to the greater DC universe as any Crisis before it, changing allegiances and power dynamics. Giving B & C level characters their due. Also, screw the notion that everything horrible that happens daily IRL, had to be tastefully done and has to contain some contrived moral lesson or, as the modern comics industry has done only to see sales plummet, is talk down to them about some issue or self censor and give us something less memorable, interesting, or an overall lack wtf moments. Oh and all side characters, regardless of gender, will always the a plot device to further the narrative of the protagonist....I mean for fucks sake, a puppy died to motivate 3 John Wick movies...Gail Simone had a shitty take, that due to the sheer fact that most superhero's were men at that moment, their love interests were usually the first to go. Oh and many female characters use the same plot device, I guess it's only sexist for one gender to use that writing trope

They were ready to make a great change, then they chickened out. A shame, I can only imagine what great stories we could have gotten in that change. Now, here we are.
