Shepherds betrayal isn't really out of nowhere. Like at first glance and on the surface, sure. But if you really listen to his dialog and his actions, it really shows that it builds up to his betrayal.

I honestly think that even if a video game has a big reveal with no foreshadowing, it WILL have foreshadowing, but the hints are very subtle so that players don’t catch it the first time. Case in point, the big twist of Bioshock with three simple words: Would You Kindly? That phrase is said a lot in Bioshock, and even in the intro, it is written on a letter. That phrase obviously has to mean something, but until the big reveal, we aren’t aware that it is a trigger phrase to control the main protagonist.

Like the the mission where you go to a Safe Room and grab a briefcase on Shepherd’s direct orders, and your team comments on the tattoos on the dead bodies, pretty sure this was a hint towards Shadow Company

@@chaseperkins6949In my opinion, the reason why Bioshock’s big twist of Would You Kindly works so well is that at the times where it is told to you, you have to do it. Like when you first enter Rapture and after a Splicer is driven away, a voice asks you this: “Would You Kindly pick up that shortwave radio?” And you do it. And then when Andrew Ryan destroys the sub with Atlas’ wife and child on it, Atlas asks you: “Would You Kindly head to Ryan’s office and kill that SOB? It’s time to end this.” And guess what, you are now heading towards to Andrew Ryan’s office to do just that. It also works on the player, as the player is so used to taking orders from an NPC in-game they don’t suspect that something is off.

To be fair you can inadvertently get hints that Master Miller is Liquid at a couple of points in the game by tying to call him on the codec (and him not answering) whenever Liquid is around. IIRC there's also a couple of moments where he's happy / upset about things he shouldn't be, or where he has knowledge he shouldn't have (such as Snake's half-japanese heritage). But these are mostly obvious in hindsight rather than obvious at the time.

Often there's an expected twist but with a totally unforeseen element. In Bioshock, everyone playing for the first time expected SOME type of betrayal along the way, but the "Would You Kindly?" connection tended to come as a real shock.

#4 reminds me of a crazy plot twist in an old game called "Enclave". that game has a "light" campaign and a "dark" campaign. every level of the "dark" campaign ends with you stepping into a magical portal to go back to HQ. BUT, at the end of one level, AFTER stepping through the portal, the leader says "i don't need you anymore" and straight-up kills your character! BUT, that's not the end of the game, it counts as FAILING THE MISSION, forcing you to play it ALL over! to continue the story, you have to step into a DIFFERENT magical portal at the end that takes you somewhere else!

PS5, through 9 as sequels while skipping PS8. But being Peckthesda; you know there will be glitches from the NPC's. But to add onto the Samus surprise ending; it also depended on how well you played. The better you did the more that would have been revealed as Samus being a woman. I had to play through the game twice after beating once and never got that ending. My buddy had to show me when I went over to his place because I didn't believe him one day and he put the game in.

Yeah right, I’m pretty sure for most of these games, the big reveal was being built up, but the game is so subtle with these reveals it looked like the reveal came out of nowhere. And sure, with Metroid, the reveal did come out of nowhere, but we didn’t know Samus was a girl at that time. Like let’s say you didn’t play the original Metroid, but played, let’s say, its GBA remake Zero Mission first, where after defeating Mother Brain, Samus removes her Power Suit. That would reveal that Samus is a girl, and if you played the original Metroid after Zero Mission, you will know that Samus is a girl. Plus, Samus is not a male name, so Samus being female is very possible if you know your male and female names.

The Liquid Snake one is so wrong I can't even compose myself. There's SO MUCH subtle foreshadowing, from the moments when you can't call Miller on the codec, to the things Liquid occasionally says during cutscenes, the fact that you can't call him during the Hind fight, but there's also a parachute indicating that Liquid most definitely survived, all of his not-so-subtle nudges about Naomi. The master plan is also foreshadowed way before it happens. People just don't see it the first time they're playing. Most important piece of the puzzle comes when Vulcan Raven tells Snake that DARPA chief wasn't actually DARPA chief. That's all you need to know to understand you're being played.

Liquid Snake and Shepherds Betrayal are the biggest ones that are wrong. And I’m also sure there is subtle foreshadowing in the big reveal of Silent Hill Shattered Memories, like the biggest clue is the game’s title itself, Shattered Memories. Now whose memories are shattered in the game? And another reveal that is wrong is the reveal of Samus being a girl. If you didn’t play the original Metroid first but played other Metroid games first, like Zero Mission where Samus is revealed to be female after defeating Mother Brain before the forced stealth section and then played the original Metroid, you will know that Samus is a girl. Plus, Samus isn’t a male name, so being a female is very much possible.

First time giving a recommendation, how about games that didn't need multiple endings, this is coming off the back end of playing Nine Sols and getting the "good ending" when in my opinion it should just be the ending, the same goes for Red Dead Redemption 2, if you got anything but the good one you're a monster and missed the entire point of the game. I understand player agency is extremely important in video games but sometimes the requirement for multiple endings is not necessary to the narrative the game is pushing.
