I've said this before on KZbin comments, but Jyn's death especially was a gut punch for me. (But in a good way.) I think that she is a great character with such a good story arc. Her death affected me so much precisely because I feel that her story arc makes her seem so deserving of having her story continue. She has the tragic backstory - her mother murdered by the Empire (Krennic), her father taken from her to finish the Death Star, being raised as a child into the proto-rebellion, but getting fed up with that and trying to live a life outside of such things, but still also outside of the law because of how she needed to stay underground, and then finally transforming from being pressed into the Alliance because of her ability to connect to her father and going along with it in hopes of helping him, to actually believing in the Cause and being willing to die for it. I agree that in some ways, this is the best Star Wars movie of them all. (Star Wars and Empire themselves will always be #1 and #2 for their overall impact and having actually built the world, though.)

@@Sephiroth144 That's an oxymoron. If they're unstoppable, then they should be able to stop others. Vader has had opportunities to complete his objectives, but instead of just doing the task, he did other stuff. If he's such a big badass scary unstoppable super powerful Sith lord, then it'd be be nothing to him to just use the Force and immediately everyone in the hall to one side all at once. Then he can just walk up grab the plans. Instead of turning off his lights, waiting dramatically until they heard his breathing, dramatically turning on his lightsaber and casually killing one rebel fool at a time, which gave them the time to hand the plans off to someone else. Even then, Vader could have used the Force to stop or fuck up Leia's ship, since Yoda said size matters not and Yoda most assuredly had at least a little to do with Anakins training. That aside, if Vader succeeded in that objective, how did the plans escape? Because it would have been smart for Jyn to just transmit the plans to everyone (in A New Hope, Vader said that plans were beamed to her ship), or even that the rebel flagship transmitted the plans to Leia's ship during her escape. Then her crew could transfer the plans to a disc and erase the plans from the ships computer. In the Death Star trench, when Vader got a lock on Luke, instead of wasting time saying, "I have you now," just shoot and kill that rebel scum. Or fire as ya say that. When Han and friends left Hoth, Vader could have stopped or slowed the Falcon, or even made it crash. But no, he just watched it leave.

Rogue One is actually my favorite Star Wars movie out of the entire franchise. I think the choice to kill off the entire cast was a good one, even though it was sad. After all, this group was instrumental in retrieving the plans for the Death Star, which is what the plot of A New Hope was about (the mission to destroy it). If they had been alive you would have to wonder where they were and why they weren't participating in any of the action. Regarding the inclusion of Tarkin: given that Tarkin is all over A New Hope, and given that ANH takes place days (if not _hours_ ) after Rogue One, it would be highly implausible to tell this story without him. Similarly, Jyn, Andor and the rest all had to die because they are NOT all over A New Hope; had they survived the mission they would have been heroes of the Rebellion (perhaps even getting medals from Princess Leia!). But since there is no mention of them outside of the opening crawl and Vader's dialogue on the Tantive IV, it stands to reason that none of the "spies" survived.
@natesmith24082 жыл бұрын
The "Bothan spies" line is from Return of the Jedi.
@wtk60692 жыл бұрын
To me, Rogue One breaks continuity between the two films. What Vader says aboard the Tantiv IV isn't the dialog of someone who personally just saw this exact same ship escape hours earlier. And the rebels' counselor ship lie makes no sense to even try if they knew Vader had just watched them depart (from literally inches away from their airlock!). In A New Hope, Vader is being overly cautious as he's digging through suspicious activity and possible lies by Leia and others. She is a Senator so he needs to be sure before he acts, but based on the end of Rogue One, he already has his proof as a first-person eyewitness. So none of the actions in A New Hope make sense anymore.
@cally777772 жыл бұрын
Apart from the other discontinuities mentioned, I'm not sure there would be much time to get the Rogue One gang into the New Hope action. The whole thing takes place at a frantic pace, and there's certainly not much opportunity to hand out congratulations. Leia is in any case imprisoned by the Empire for a large part of New Hope, and running away from it for most of the rest. So they'd just have joined Chewy in the No Medals Club. On the subject of Leia and continuity breaks, her line, "I only hope when the data's analysized, a weakness can be found" makes no sense, if she's already aware the plans reveal a weakness.' Sorry folks, I'll never be watching those two movies one after the other.

I am far from being a 'hardcore' fan, so my opinion might not have this much weight, but I think at least amongst the new movies, Rogue One stands out. First of all, because the story and the characters actually make (mostly) sense. And second, because this movie is such a fan service in so many regards. I was always under the impression that a lot of people were involved in the making of this movie who never stopped being like enthusiastic little children and with a lot of love for, as well as knowledge about this universe. I simply loved to see an actually _living_ and animate universe, places that look like people actually living here and people actually looking like normal citizens doing mundane day-to things. Many things, military equipment, machinery and droids included, actually look worn down by constant use, just like one would expect for instance with troops which spend most of their time on active duty and not in a troop transporter or inside some sealed off installation. And I love how the main protagonists are actual people that show weaknesses, insecurities and fears, not just some semi-gods who do everthing off the cuff, never show any sign of struggle or even traumatization and are, of course, unswerving in their conviction they are always right and righteous.

While I didn't know a lot of these, the inclusion of Red and Gold Leader stood out to anyone who's seen the original. I loved it, as it gave it a more direct tie to the first film. In an interview with Angus MacInnes (Gold Leader) he talks about re-recording his lines and how cool, yet somewhat unsettling it was seeing himself from nearly forty years earlier in a current film. I think we would have seen a lot more from Red Leader had Drew Henley not sadly passed away the year prior. There were some who wanted to see Porkins return, though that might have been overkill. Either way, I do like seeing the previously unheralded side characters get a lot more love in recent years. Heck, Angus MacInnes even has his own table at some conventions now, while sporting a "Gold Leader" hat, which has been popular with fans. :)

Jules, I thought I was ALONE in my ranking Rogue 1 as the definitive best Star Wars film. From the first viewing I was hooked, ranking it right behind Empire, but even then I'd go back-n-forth & say Rogue #1, Empire #2. First, the cast is phenomenal (VII, VIII & IX were cast quite well, save for a few bad choices) but Rogue was perfect. Thanks to a tight script, a brilliant story line and characters that brought this sci-fi epic to an emotional level the other 10 films don't come close to matching. Side note, I freely admit I'm an emotional sap, but I can't lie that tears flow every time Jyn watches her father's hologram message. The dynamic between Jyn & Cassian, their character transitions from A to B to C. And Tudyk as K-2, (I might be alone on this one) my favorite droid of the 11 films. No foolish 3PO dialogue, trying way too hard to be witty or humorous. K-2 nailed the light comic touches effortlessly. Rogue is fast paced, the story doesn't try to accomplish too much (2 recent films that were disappointments, Eternals & No Way Home, too many characters squeezed in, so the storyline suffers, becomes convoluted). I often think back to what's considered the best Star Trek film. At it core, a storyline that's totally believable and even familiar (revenge) as Kahn's story. It's simplistic (basic) story, yet the film is anything but. Throw in the Genesis project, an ear canal scene that's beyond cringy and you've got a classic. These are similar attributes that I associate w/ Rogue One. Thank you for humoring my tendency to be long winded. One quick final message please. I'm not sure of the probability that you'll read this (not out of disinterest, but because you are no doubt bombarded with constant fan mail making it difficult to keep up with all our input, views & BS, lol. I always loved how they showed different factions of the rebels in this movie. It's not as clearly Black and white, it's numerous shades of gray (thank god, not 50 of them...:D). When I was a kid in the 90's, I used to talk about how I'd love to see a Star Wars movie from the point of view of imperial officers, and/or stormtroopers, and/or people sympathetic to the empire, because I always hated when movies were like "We are the mean guys because we are evil Muhahahaha (Who the hell laughs like that in real life anyway? :p Can we make the evil laugh a thing of the past? or at least use it with far more moderation? :p). and that most things are a matter of point of view (No Obi Wan reference intended) and that's why I thought such a movie would be interesting. Rogue One, although not being that, probably is the closest thing that we've got (on screen) on the subject. I hate when people think that "evil people" are just evil because of....evilness? because of "the devil" :p ? It's like in real life when people are like "Had I been a German in WW2 I can say for a fact that I would have actively fought and be willing to give me life to oppose the Nazis".....It's like, yeah...it's probably true for some of those saying that, but statistically it definitely isn't for everyone saying that. You have to understand the context, the propaganda, the events that preceded, etc (Not that any of it excuses what happened. Nothing can ever justify what happened.) So yeah, seeing Saw Gerrera do some questionable stuff, and even Cassian talking about the rebellion being implicated with arms, drugs, assassinations, sabotage, and trying to justify it to themselves by saying it's for a greater cause really was something interesting as far as I'm concerned.

Peter Cushing always spoke highly of Star Wars, even before it was the smash hit. He later said he regretted being killed off as he couldn't appear in the sequels. I think he would be fine with his appearance in Rogue One. I have a complex relationship with the film. I hate that the exhaust port was a deliberate weakness, it was explained in the original Star Wars that the shot down it was impossible. The Empire (or rather Tarkin) thought Vader was the only trained Force user left so the design wouldn't consider a small torpedo a threat. Even when Tarkin is advised of the possibility he is dismissive and refuses to evacuate, thus being on board when the Death Star is destroyed.

i was 12 years old back in 1977 when we saw A New Hope and it blew our minds. Since then i have loved the STAR WARS universe, comics at first, then more movies, then games. Rogue One is THE BEST STAR WARS movie ever made, cause it was full of characters that you see in in a game called STAR WARS GALAXIES : AN EMPIRE DIVIDED. You play as the "Uncle Ben" type, a civilian that tries to make it through life, wether it's a crafter, an entertainer, a doctor, a hunter, a fighter, etc. That's what we see in Rogue One, no 70's wisecracking punchlines, no stupid family humor, with the small exception of the robot and in the end no one makes it out alive. And the unexpected ending with the rebels barely managing to save the blueprints from Darth Vader and the corvette escaping to space....which leads to the very beginning of A NEW HOPE. But Rogue One isn't Episode 3 because of the lack of the cannon characters, save Darth Vader. It was a branch on a tree, which would be the cannon films as we know them. However, it was a very interesting story, a solid adventure that kept the interest peaked even from the very beginning. WHAT'S NOT TO LIKE ?????

I watched Rogue One kind of by accident. I had never watched episodes 1, 2, and 3 on purpose. But after about 17 years I decided to force my way through them since there were some plot points I had been told I'd been missing. Jeez those were awful. Then there was this new Rouge One... I had no idea what it was about but I thought hey, there's absolutely no way it can be as bad as what I just endured. I was blown away! I think I watched that whole movie with my jaw on the floor. I haven't had as much of a problem with the newer episodes as some people, I think they're alright. But nothing since the original trilogy hit me like Rogue One.

Rogue 1 best Star Wars movie for me too. I can remember seeing a new hope in Jan 1978 at a cinema in Perth Western Australia and it blew me away. You have to remember the depressing shizen they were serving up during the 70s. It was disaster movie after disaster movie. By disaster I don't mean really bad, although they were, I mean it was Towering inferno, airports 1 to 100 (plane crashes and such drama) and Poseidon adventure (Boat sinks some people survive not the audience though). Rogue one resurrected the excitement of New Hope.

I always felt that Rogue 1 was the Grunts movie. Like with Gundam with it's MS08th team, this was about the regular people, not the great and powerful Jedi heroes. I still like Return of the Jedi the best though, and I suppose that's another issue I have with the sequel series. It's like with Terminator, the ending of the 2nd movie was perfect but all the other films after subverts and contradicts it. I would have been happier with if they adapted Heir to the Empire rather than a Disney version of Dark Empire. The Palpatine story should have been done already, and Heir was the most celebrated story arc of the expanded universe and it was logical to believe that a polity as large as the Empire would fall to factions and warlords, like so many real world governments did after a brutal regime was toppled.

@@re1010 you could still do that while leaving two characters behind. Not everybody died in Saving Private Ryan to which this movie keeps getting compared to. Seriously? You could avoid the “they’ll be fine” as you put it by having our two survivors laid up in hospital beds aboard the Rebel medical frigate. The movie could have easily ended not by seeing Leia’s ship fly off to Tatooine but by mirroring the ending of The Empire Strikes Back as we see the Rebel medical frigate fly away in the opposite direction and jump into hyperspace. Roll credits. What happens to them afterwards? Who cares! That’s up to the sequel of the planned new trilogy or for the tv series that they are making anyway that they just have to retune it to take place between A New Hope and Return of the Jedi.
