One of the great losses in tv today is the disappearance of many of the "girl next door" girls and women on tv. In the 60's, 70's and 80's you had many girls and women that had a very natural beauty (examples could be Bailey Quarters from WKRP, Winnie Cooper from Wonder Years or Kimberley Drummond from Diff'rent Strokes). The final picture of this video truly makes me long for the days that there were just "nice" girls on tv that reminded you of certain girls you would meet in every day life. Nowadays, the vast majority of female characters on tv look like they are straight out of central casting where they all must fit "the look" rather than "the character". What a loss.

The Bugaloos blew me over every Saturday morning in '70-'71, mainly because I had a crush on Caroline, alias Joy. She brought "Joy" to my mornings, especially when Sparky the Firefly expressed his own hots for her, and she kissed him and his tail "blushed," or she petted his hand. (I could relate to Sparky, as an awkward loner who strove to fit in, and sometimes dominate.) And real estate is one of my primary interests now, as a writer on that subject, so my linkage to Caroline continues, albeit on a new level. (BTW, another Bugaloos auditioner who didn't get the part was John Reid, who went on to be manager for Queen and Elton John.) Thanks for posting!

I was definitely a fan of The Bugaloos as a child; I watched them faithfully every Saturday morning. My parents were aware of this and surprised me with a double whammy of a birthday present: a portable record player (it could play 33s and 45s) as well as the soundtrack album... that was quite a score. I've no idea what happened to it, though. I remember two of my favorite tracks were "It's New to You" and "Fly Away With Us". Considering that the song writers were responsible for "Killing Me Softly With His Song", the offerings on that kid's show soundtrack were pretty sophisticated.

Thanks so much for sharing this memory, Dave. I confess Caroline Ellis was my first crush, just before Laurie Partridge. I did not know Phil Collins had auditioned. He may have created music after leaving the show, but it would also change the history of Mike Rutherford, Peter Gabriel, and the rest. But I agree hands down, the theme song is the best. Like many, I was watching at the exact right time for this shows debut. In the early 2000’s I began noticing more and more Bugaloos fan tribute websites popping up. All with various scraps of information, photos, video clips, discussion threads, etc. All was swapped freely. While they took various approaches to the subject matter, all seemed to agree on one thing. From the first episode, a pretty butterfly lady sang to cheer up a firefly, time stopped, and we all felt safe. A generation was hooked. Further, at the end of each episode, the cast did something new and unexpected. They looked at us asking to “please write, we’d love to hear from you!” Like they had to ask. But it wouldn’t be until the 2010’s (or as we think of it ~ FOREVER!!!), when the cast interviews started happening. By phone, video interviews, zoom calls, and now Kroftcon! I’m sure the reactions were quite vocal, but hardly surprising. (And, yes, we’d like to hear more about Kroftcon, Mr. S!) While Wayne LaReya has elected to remain out of the spotlight, Caroline, John Philpott, and occasionally John McIndoe have told some wonderful stories over the years. *The cast loved working with Martha Rae and Billy Barty. *When anyone couldn’t find John Philpott on set, it was because he was off discussing drumming techniques with Billy, who had his own drum kit! Not a toy set, but one custom built for someone his size. *The Bugaloos didn’t play in England for many years, as the title too closely resembled a certain nasty word there. *When the Krofts first brought the cast to Calif., they put them up in a large Mansion. While exploring the area, they came upon a musical instruments store. There, they met a fellow Brit Reggie Dwight who had just come to the U.S. with his band hoping to make his mark. He did. We still know him by his stage name, Elton John! Caught a couple of the recent Zoom interviews. One with the Krofts and the cast, sans Wayne. But he sent his sister! Very cool. And I have to say, though I still don’t know where to write to, and even though she didn’t sing, aCaroline Ellis is still the pretty butterfly lady, and I still felt safe.

I was a big Sid and Marty Krofft fan and would watch any show they produced [My favorites being 'Bigfoot And Wildboy' and 'Electra Woman And Dyna Girl'] As a collector of rare and eclectic music, i am going to have to try to find the Bugaloos album. Loved The Bugaloos with Caroline Ellis. I especially loved Martha Raye as Benita Bizarre. Dave you should do a segment on her. She had a great movie career as a comedienne. On television she had her own TV show and was on many other tv shows including Carol Burnett. Later on she was on McMillan as Rock Hudson's housekeeper and a recurring role on Alice as Mel's wacky mother and touring as 3 girls 3 singing group. By the way my mother dated a man who dated her. It's interesting that, after all these years, the 2 Bugaloos songs that hold up the best for me are Caroline's songs, Castles in the Air and The Senses of Our World. Was For a Friend the single? I think I heard it was somewhere back in time, but not sure. BTW, the songs are here on KZbin, or were. They take a little finding, and some won't play on KZbin Music. As of last year. Another great song from the album, which was never on the show, is Just The Memory Stays Around. And I always preferred the versions of For a Friend, It's New to You, and especially Believe, that appeared on the show, although they were shorter. Ditto Castles in the Air. I'll have to try to search for that campy csmp movie. I don' think I've seen it. Should be a hoot. Thanks for all your good work. 👍.

We know what it was about The Bugaloos, and it was the absolutely delicious Caroline Ellis - she was pure, well, Joy. Martha Raye had all the best lines as Benita Bizarre. And you HAD to love Woofer and Tweeter -- and, of course, Peter Platter who had vinyl records for eyes. But this was a shift from the Kroffts' usual pattern (normal guy falls into strange world of puppet creatures). The Bugaloos started in the strange world -- and stayed there. But the show was always fun, especially when Joy came into the scene.

These days, the only place you're going to be able to find the original LP is at a store that sells used records. And even then, I suspect that it will be hard to find.

Also in a episode of the BBC's "Only Fools And Horses" called "Go West Young Man" in the Summer of 1981 which was the 2nd episode of the British TV series. The 2 men go to the nighttime club to meet Caroline & her female friend but don't score.

Look up Norman Gimbel. He wrote the theme song to the show. He did tons of tv themes as well as some extremely huge hits. And one Killing Me Softly that had some controversy behind it.

I accidentally ran across this show one day when I was younger. I had never heard of it before, but I love Martha Rae. I know, I was always the weird kid..........I liked people and stuff that most adults liked and other kids didn't. Oh well. I love Martha Rae and I loved all the characters she's played. She was the only reason I watched this show.

Caroline was nice enough to accept my friend request on Facebook. We chatted a while back and she admitted to me that although during the closing credits all 4 cast members clearly encouraged their viewers to write them “we love to hear from you” was the disclaimer, the crew seemingly never let then see their letters and/or fan mail….hmmmm!

There is a "The Brady Bunch" episode ("Peter and the Wolf") which has a character named Linda, who I thought had a striking resemblance to Miss Ellis, only it was not her name in the episode's closing credits!!

i watched this show when I was a child. I loved the hair style that they had on Caroline. I asked the mother if I could get my hair cut like Hers from the show but when I got my long hair cut instead of the hair cut I wanted I was given a shag( cut in different lengths) which took me over 26 years to get my hair all one length. I would still at this time love to have this hair style even though I am older.

I love all the Krofft shows, but the Bugaloos was one of my favorites too, Martha Raye was absolutely fabulous as the over the top villainess Benita Bizarre. I was 13 years old and the main reason I watched the show was because I had a crush on Jon Philpot who played courage.

The art and theatre students from my college would get together Friday nights, go bar hopping until 4 am, get a nosh at an all night diner, then go to one of the apartments to watch the Saturday morning cartoons. One of the shows we watched was "The Bugaloos". Not as trippy as "HR Pufnstuf", which we use to watch, "The Bugaloos" was a close runner up.
