It might be where you are living, the education the people got etc. In my city a gentleman is still very appreciated and in general women are polite also. I think the answer to why it only exists in 80's movies is the same reason music or video games, or hobbies were all better in the past. It's because the human brain remembers the classics. There are plenty of modern romantic movies today. The quality, however is much easier to see in the past. With the past, you don't remember trashy flicks. - more below - It's kinda like living in a city and looking down the street. The buildings are so random near you, nothing's interesting, only 1 or 2 interesting buildings. Then you gaze into the distance, you see 6 jaw-dropping buildings that make you think, "wow, look at that." Unfortunately, this mentality disregards all of the surrounding buildings to that gaze. You don't see the slummy rundown apartment just 1 block over to the right, you don't see that bland, no banner shop that's owned by some guy named "Mike". They are all in the shadow of that big extravagant hotel.
