@Fuk99999

I tend to not agree with the notion that the 3DS version looks better in most cases. Aside from the sheer technical disparity, the art direction as a whole is changed, and I think the 3DS version really misses the point in lot of spots. Most notable in shadow temple, well and Ganon’s entire dungeon and fight. Nothing about the 3DS version comes off like a fantasy anime made in the 90s. Much of the aesthetic intent is just absolutely gone. Play a 1.0 or even 1.2 cart on actual hardware on a CRT, or even boot up the PC port with the wonderfully made oot reloaded texture mod and you’ll get a far more adequate idea of what the art was going for. It’s not just the hardware itself they played to the strength of, it was the display hardware as well and the sheer vibrance of color is just all wrong because the game was suppose to be more “rich” than vibrant. And that’s not even addressing some more odd animation choices like Ganondorf not syncing up to his breathing or the credits audio not being aligned because the original was made with the hardware’s framerate tanking during it in mind. And a number of character models are just…wrong. There’s even mods on gamebanana that showcase the art difference because people have noticed how the original art direction was.

The 3ds version fixed the biggest problem with the n64 game and made the boots an equippible item rather than an item you need to pause the game every time to put on and take off. This one change makes the infamously tedious water temple wayyy more tolerable. My biggest gripe with the 3DS version is it kinda ruined the final battle with ganon. The lighting was so bright whereas in the N64 version ganon was only visible when lightning struck which was so intimidating. They also turned his blood green for some reason.

To be fair about the final battle with Ganon, the 3DS has a really small screen that’s often surrounded by bright colors (depending on the color of your 3DS, mine is the bright shiny turquoise one). It would be pretty irritating to fight him if the screen was as dark as on N64, because you’d either have to squint the whole time or play in pitch black darkness yourself. @MEM-brain
@MEM-brain 2 ай бұрын
Ocarina of time is not necessary a dark game, in fact, the official art for the game has moreso a Disney vibe to it. That sed, due to being on a handheld, they didn't do the actual dark scenes justice, as they are over brightened (most notable being the final boss fight). This argument only really works with Majora's Mask, as that game is without a doubt one of the darkest games for it's age rating.

This is totally subjective, but I prefer the N64 originals of both OoT and MM because they had better atmosphere and animations for Link. The 3DS remakes are great, but I think that the brighter lighting and more colorful textures alter the atmosphere too much. Link's new animations also look a bit wonky and are "too smooth" in a way, especially the somersault jump in MM. These things coupled make the 3DS version feel less somber and more whimsical, and more gamey. The N64 graphics on both games might feel pretty outdated when playing on a modern TV or emulated in high rez, but they are still very good for the N64 era, and they hold up pretty nicely when played on a real CRT television. I agree though that the 3DS versions are great in their own, and maybe I would recommend them to totally new players. But just MAYBE! Perhaps I would first suggest trying the N64 version. Plus you do lose a lot with confining yourself to the tiny 3DS screen instead of TV. I wish someone would mod the quality of life features from the 3DS remake into the N64 version (although you can never bring over the touch screen features), or the N64 color palette and animation style into the 3DS version. :D

And I've played the original (actually the GC port, but runs exactly like the N64) first and many times. One thing I noticed when I first played OoT3D was the design change for the Forest Insignia. The N64 version it contained 4 leaves while in the 3DS version it has 3 leaves. This insignia redesign also carried over into Twilight Princess HD. On the original GameCube release for Twilight Princess, the Forest Insignia in the Mirror Chamber used the old 4 leafed design. The HD remake used the 3 leafed one. I think Grezzo made this change to possibly avoid controversy from people mistaking it for a certain German symbol.

@@DAVID-ANDERSON The theory that the Forest Temple was initially wind themed has looked a little shaky with the discovery of the SW97 data. SW97 Forest Temple is not dissimilar to what we got. There wasn't much time before SW97 for another dungeon to have existed, been scrapped, and replaced with a completely new one. @@SuperflyMiceguyThe Water Temple was also present in the SW97 data. Its appearance may not be quite what we remember, clues suggest that its concept is very much in line with the Water Temple we know and love heh. The SW97 Water Medallion also looks like a snowflake yet it’s dungeon is clearly not about ice. A possible explanation is that Nintendo EAD chose the medallion designs primarily to represent the magic they planned for them, rather than the places they were found. EAD may not have had many ideas for water spells or the N64 couldn’t handle them as simulating fluids (even in simplistic ways) has been pretty tricky for the entirety of gaming history.

The pacing is several orders of magnitude better in the 3DS version, it's like night and day. It was honestly such a slog to play the original for the text speed alone. But yeah the game running at 30fps instead of 20, the higher poly visuals, updated and improved lighting, and gyro controls makes the 3DS version the definitive official version of Ocarina of Time. My issues with the 3DS are a bit on the artistic side. Mainly it's the cutscenes. For example: Link drawing his sword BEFORE Ganondorf says "You've got guts kid" was always weird, when in the 64 version he drew his sword after he said it, as if to challenge him, then Ganondorf laughs after that. It made so much sense, I don't get that weird change, it ruined the pacing. Also, Ganondorf when he used the Triforce of Power to turn into Ganon, in the original N64 version, he just straight up threw his arms back and legs down. In the 3DS, he was so... non chalant about it. Then, the Ganon fight. I don't know if it was technical limitations or artistic choice back in the day, but MY GOD! When you fought Ganon in shadow, seeing only his silhouette and eyes, it was incredible! 3DS you could see him and there's a bit of majesty lost. Everything else however, the 3DS tops.

Although I agree that the pacing in the Young Link/Ganondorf confrontation in the original is better, it makes perfect sense for Ganondorf to say "You've got guts, kid" *after* Link draws his sword, he just says it in a different context. In the remake, Ganondorf sees that this *little kid* is entirely ready to fight, kill, or die to protect a person from a someone much stronger than himself. Link drawing his sword is the direct challenge, and one that shows a lot of courage, which is what Ganondorf comments on in the remake. In the original, the challenge to Ganondorf was Link refusing to answer his question. It is defiant and brave, but not a direct threat. It is more subtle and I think it fits the scene a lot better to have Ganondorf just assume that a kid is being a brat rather than trying to actively stop him at first, until Link prepares to fight. The "You've got guts, kid" is in reference to Link being brave enough to be disobedient to someone stronger than him, rather than being brave by trying to stop him, until it is revealed that he is doing both. I like the depth that the original has, and I think it is weird to change it, but in the new context of the remake, the line still makes perfect sense.

My biggest problems with the original are the shoddy frame rate, and poor frametimes, the slooowww menu opening animation, and the stupiddd fucking poe and spider house side quests. those suck major ass. Tbh, I think the audio in the 3DS version is a bit worse than the original N64 version. If you look at tracks like Forest Temple for example, the mix is kind of ruined on the 3DS version. I do think the graphical changes on the 3DS version are mostly good, though some areas are made too bright and some things (such as the Mirror Shield and Bottom of the well blood) have been censored from the original. OOT 3D just has too many glaring flaws to me. Presentation is the big one because the original had a lot of ambition going into it where the 3DS version just seems to be cleaned up for modern sensibilities (the game is rated E10 and really sanitized the more dark toned areas of the game where the original got away with a lot despite being rated just E) as well as the 3DS hardware being…well, a handheld. They had to retune the game to be more pick up and play friendly, so that naturally lead to stuff like making things brighter that wouldn’t have been before or even including the shiekah help stone right in front of your house or…inside the temple of time where it absolutely ruins the atmosphere. Not that the game ever needed it, it was always easy. On one hand, having the extra item slot is very helpful and the ability to just toggle iron boots on/off without having to pause the game every time really cleans up the water temple’s main issue, but you are left with a version of the game that not only misses the point aesthetically, but lacks the ambition the original was aiming for. And I could go further into how Grezzo didn’t think about/outright ignored or lied by omission about certain things. They said all the exploitable glitches would be untouched when asked, but didn’t bother even giving the heads up that the better framerate makes them incredibly difficult to pull off and in some cases, do at all. And then they broke rolling from falls and that issue persists even in MM3D (which was fixed by the fan patch)

Nice comparison video! The 3DS version is the one I typically play these days, though I should revisit the classic N64 port. There were a few sound effect changes I noticed in the 3DS version too; when Stalchildren and Leevers come up from the ground, it sounds different from the original. The same can be said for the guillotines in the Shadow Temple. I also noticed you don't hear Lord Jabu Jabu breathing anymore in the 3DS version. As for the Skulltullas, I typically stop collecting them after 30 because by then I have my Giant's Wallet and I'm good.

I Wouldn’t say them making the paths of the lost woods undistinguishable in the 3DS version so you can’t tell which way to go is a downside. you forgot to also mention that the 3DS version have patched one of the best glitches to get gold skulltulas with, so there will be always a soft dirt place in the game where you have to put bugs on it to get the skulltulas out, you get bugs in a bottle and release them to the soft dirt area, in the N64 version, when you release them you could keep a bug in your bottle so you don't have to find and catch them again, but you cant keep a bug when you release it on the 3DS version, its a pain in the ass when you have to 100% the game on it
