People rent these storage units out to hold their stuff. When they stop paying the rent for the storage unit the company gets ahold o the person and warns them. The guy that owned these probably moved to another country that’s why he couldn’t get ahold of his stuff. The company then sold the storage unit to what’s inside and now it’s all of his property.

I wonder what the guy's house looks like? His hobbies? His daily routine? Does he like going to games with his friends? Playing games after coming home from work? Biking on the weekends? Just imagining his walls are full of those posters and artworks. That horse statue on his kitchen counter. The cool glass globe on his living room. Skateboarding at the local park? Does he live in a modern type house or in those classic ones? Does he smoke those cigars with his buddies or work friends? Or maybe he just likes collecting them? It's really fascinating when you think about it.

I was about to comment as to what vultures you all appear, but then I’ve just read that you are returning all this stuff to the poor dude. Congrats on being decent people. We had a similar situation with a vehicle left in our suburb packed to the gunwales with sporting equipment that a French backpacker couple had had to abandon (not knowing anyone in Australia) and return home at the onset of COVID. We as a neighbourhood tracked down the owners and told them we would put the vehicle into storage until they could return, to which they were most grateful and we have kept in touch since.Having travelled the US on my own many times you always have it in the back of your mind, the realisation that you do not know a single soul on the whole continent, it can be quite daunting and I can only imagine when the initial reality of the pandemic hit people just needed to get home. The situation with the storage locker, raises some questions, re-the integrity of the operators, if you could find the owner, it’s pretty poor that they couldn’t. I had already commenced inquiries here in Perth with the caterpillar agency to try and locate the owner.

@@strhaivenswr Not necessarily, there are always uses for computers whether it be a laptop NAS or simply for downloading sketchy software, a computer of only 2 years of age is very useful. My personal computer works fine and is a lightly moded Dell XPS desktop from 6 years ago. If nothing else you could turn the laptop into a simple mobile web browsing machine. However, I suppose when you have a multi-million dollar home, (What's inside) ya it's pretty much junk. Especially for Mac users, LOL.

@@sbalogh53 They found the owner, they have been looking for him ever since they bought his locker because they wanted him to have his things back. Which like Lord Vampire said, if they didn't buy it someone would have had bought the locker and then kept the whole thing instead of trying to find this businessman. Dan has said on a comment a few threads above this one that they have been personally looking for the Australian on facebook, twitter etc for weeks too. Their changing their phone number and email addresses made it a bit more difficult too because Dan had no idea of where to start until they started looking in these boxes. BTW, I am also an Australian so I didn't feel angry, just felt sad for the original owner because by the contents alone he was expecting to come back because his business is there as is his new life there and I felt they was being respectful when looking through these things (They had to do the pricing though because that is what they was planning to do, to compare the contents' cost to how much they paid for the unit itself and I think that was pretty educational because not many people understand how these things work.) They are sending the things back to him now that they have found him, although given the situation going on around the world it might be a good long time before the man's things arrive on Australian shores.

I am so glad that they tried to find the owner and succeeded in finding him. I no longer feel angry towards these guys and their humanity has been fully restored in my opinion. They do indeed have a good heart for returning the items to the owner. Thank you for letting me know they found the Australian guy. It makes me feel much better. Storage units are a money pit for renter & gold mine for storage company. It’s so easy to throw stuff in a storage unit & pay that rental fee every month without thinking twice. Out of sight out of mind. I hurried & cleaned out both my units.

I can't imagine the circumstances that made someone lose all of the most important belongings in their life because they didn't make the payments on a storage unit. It sounds like since he changed his number and address he probably doesn't even know it was sold. I'm willing to bet he thought he had auto pay on the unit or something, and will be in for a major shock to come back to find it empty.
