I'm 41 and live at home but my parents were loving and courageous enough to allow me to come back 8 years ago despite a 10 year meth addiction and on the verge of homelessness. I've been clean and sober for 8 years, work full time as an Industrial Relations Specialist and in the middle of my 3rd term on my way to an AA degree in Business Administration. I pay my share and more in bills, and help with the general up-keep of the house, etc. I wont be here forever, but I'm indebted to my family for letting me heal at home!

@Bulimic Diet no they win in contrast to people in their early twenties who have to pay their own rent etc, when those people living with their parents can save on their future by studying with less stress, they save money to buy their house instead of going into more debt like those who are kicked out by their "parents". They win by getting the unconditional love of their parents they deserve as their childs, when those young people who are thrown out are seen as guests who are unwelcome in their "parents" home. Those young people who live with their parents win at all costs.

For those who don't know: In American culture a person is severely looked down upon if they live with their parents or family after ages 18-22. It is viewed as a sign of failure. I don't personally believe that but in society it is. I believe that when you are 18 or older than you should pay rent if you still live with your parents or family.

Absolutely. I mean, I didn't pay rent before I moved away, but as long as I did everything else, I didn't have to or need to, but a lot of people seem to think that rent should be forced. I'm not saying it's "not fair" but it would be much harder to save up, and instead of doing that, saving up for a new car and new place is exactly what I did to move out. Also, my brothers and I visit my parents out of choice and if we decide to, not because it's forced at all nor should it be (they're not elders yet either). They made they choice to have kids at the end of the day, that can't be argued with, and it is not selfish or entitled to disagree with those who think kids "owe" parents any more than they owe their kids anything. What they say is not at all a fact. Visiting and aiding is the right thing to do I believe in my opinion even if we didn't always get along, but I do not believe it should ever be forced nor should anyone be judged for not doing so. Furthermore, if a child doesn't want to care for his or her parents if they are forced out, then I would understand that, because after all, the parents are "adults" and adults care for themselves. I mean, they're allowed to force you out once you turn 18, but society thinks you should take care of them nonetheless? How does that make any sense? You get what you give. :)

The way that kid looks at his dad for approval after saying "18" is really sad. Kids are smart, and the fact that he knows exactly how to answer John's question in a way his dad will approve shows that he's just answering the question to appease his dad. I'm sure inside he's like, "wow my dad wants me to go away in a few years". and that's sad

We learnt about this issue in school. This is happening to our generation because all the jobs are still being taken by the baby boomers, so we get thousands of dollars of debt then can't get into the career we went to college for, so we are stuck in low paying jobs until spots open up, resulting in kids moving back home to save money.

This concept of kicking the kids out of the home is a relatively new phenomena in our country. In the late 1800's and early 1900's Americans had extended families. The son or daughter would marry and have children in the same household. Everyone would participate in the responsibilities of the household and would inherit the family home when the parents passed on. Families could easily take care of each other and generation after generation this would continue. The real reason this became a thing of the past, is because the banks and the government wanted to remove the inherited wealth from the families and force them into long term debt and dependence with the banks and federal government programs. When the automobile was invented, it gave the youth a false sense of independence, because now the children of former generations felt empowered and wanted to buy their own homes. The banks capitalized on this and issued mortages (death grips) to the youth who were interested in buying up property. The problem was they didn't realize that they were being decieved and locked up in financial debt with interest for a large proportion of their lives! Wheras with the children who stayed with their families and inherited the family home, they were financially ahead because they were not in debt and owned their homes outright! They could provide for themselves and their families relatively easily, without the stress of paying on a mortage or bank loan with high interest. The banks and big government want people like YOU to be locked up in debt, so that you will not have the same kind of financial independence that your grandparents and great grandparents once had!

@@joemcflys6856 Because big banks and big government want the people like you and I to be indebted to them. They use programs such as this as propaganda to convince the masses what is considered to be "acceptable " and "normal" in our society. Pay close attention. Even major news networks will broadcast stories like the 30 year old man who lives at home as a societal taboo and use it for propaganda purposes to shape people's public opinions. If we are indebted to the banks, we as people do not really have true independence or freedom!
@jasonkhan854
@jasonkhan854 6 жыл бұрын
@African_Child_labour_worker Yes. The baby boomers wanted their children out of the house by 18, so that they could continue living in their selfish lives. However, its not their entire fault. The banks and creditors were the main cause of this problem. They perpetuated and promoted this philosophy to attain power and financial control over the people. They literally stole people's fortunes by convincing people not to let their children inherit the family home by convincing the boomers that they should enroll in a reverse mortgage or sell their property to finance their retirement. This concept appealed to many people in the baby boomer generation. It gave them a false sense of independence and this strategy caused a major financial divide and gap in our economy and empowered financial institutions and big banks to retain their power by offering mortgages with ridiculous interest rates! Unfortunately, many people fell into this trap and continue to struggle paying off their mortgages and trying to make ends meat at the same time! Best solution to this problem would be to bring back the concept of extended families back into our country, so that we the people can take the power back from the financial institutions and banks!

@usher luck what you're describing sounds just fine to me. However I was replying to someone who is essentially saying that getting a job isn't for them. Please enlighten me as to how you help your parents with the expenses if you don't have a job? there's nothing wrong with living with your parents as long as you're a contributing member of the household and society. unfortunately right now in the US there is virtually an epidemic of young people who stay with their parents yet also refuse to get a job even though they're perfectly capable of working. I've seen story after story of parents losing tens of thousands of dollars (in some cases their life savings) supporting their parasitic adult children. That is not "love" that is taking advantage of your parents kindness, and that is definitely something I will "never understand". When someone within the context of this conversation describes the workplace as "depressing" and full of "fake friends" and then concludes "sorry not me" I think it's reasonable for me to assume that they are one of these people. I don't believe anyone who would do this to their parents deserves respect from me or anyone else but I guess that just makes me "dumb" .

When people are sick, they need their loved ones too, why cant you nurse them 24/7. when you were a kid, they stayed up all night, cleaned your ass, changed your diapers, got you things, compromised their own desires and made you happy. When you grow up and earn Good. Its your duty to provide your parents comfort, when your Mum is 60 adn your father is retired and 65, he might not be feeling very energetic, you can get him his favourite food. you can have a beer with your dad. your children will love the company of their grandparents. a good son is a support system for his parents, especially the father. I dont have a father, I know what it is like to not have the support. and plus you can spend your money on creating a business instead of putting your money into a house of your own. I agree, that western parents are not heartless, they have such a culture, but forefully making someone leave is nonsense.

Apart from that, there are other factors as well like the DRAMA and JEALOUS within the family. @@TheOne-tl6nj True, but people also don't pay anything these days and things cost alot of money and people should know that as well. Just because you go to college doesn't mean anything. Now,you should do like myself and start somewhere and in a proffesion that you've to work your way up to make really good money but starting off and while you're getting that experience to move up. Then you're gonna struggle big time and it's easier said than done moving out on your own.Cell phone, car insurance,if you've a car note,gas for your car, rent, utilities,food for home and to eat while not at home. Health insurance etc etc and the list goes on and on and it gets expensive QUICKLY. It's actually really sad and PATHETIC that no jobs and especially these big corporations don't wanna pay a damn thing and they're all so greedy but then expect you to bust your ass and bend over backwards for them yet they won't do shit for you. All while making peanuts. Then everyone wants to give their 2 cents in and wonder why people can't afford things and why alot of people still live at home and alot of people even move back home because they find out how hard it's and they can't afford it on their own or with a dang roommate. Sad.... This country and the economy is so fucked up that I'm very shocked it hasn't crashed yet and you now also know why awesome people are homeless. Everyone now offers extremely low pay and it's hard to move up or find anything that starts off paying decent but everything is constantly going up up and up even higher making it harder everyday. This is soooo culturally related. I am Italian, living in Italy but I spent my college years in the US. got the chance to catch a glimpse of both worlds, and it's true, once you are out of high school in the US you rarely go back home...here in Italy though, and in many other countries as well, time is much more flexible. If you never marry, often you stay at home and live with your parents as an adult, and it's not too weird. The video made it seem like the guy was too old to live with his family, but really it depends on where you come from. There is no universal rule in parenting :)

My brother lived with my parents until he got married at 29. He worked very hard and helped with the chores, cooking, cleaning, buying groceries, paying part of the utilities, he respected the house and never showed up drunk or on drugs. With all of the money he saved from not paying rent, he was able buy his house cash right before he got married. My parents were absolutely happy to have him home, we enjoyed so many good times together. Many years have passed since, my parents are now older and he is not stuck paying high interest on a mortgage for 30 years so he is able to help them out if they ever need anything. It's really awesome! But I do understand parents wanting to kick their kids out if they just wanna be lazy and get a free ride.

My uncle lived with his mother until 41 (when he met his wife and moved out.) He'd often come home drunk and didn't have to do anything around the house, but my grandmother was more than happy to have him. (He was an odd mixture between dead beat and successful. He ran his own company and it was successful, but he'd often drink after work and sometimes drive home like that totalling multiple cars in the same trench.) She even considered him when moving to a smaller home that'd be easier to maintain. Meanwhile my parents counted down the days to my 18th b-day. :D

Yeah I actually agree with that a bit. I mean usually I feel like by the time you hit at least 24 years old then it's time to think about moving but yeah if you're doing something and have a plan sure.

As a low-income family, if my brother and I moved out of the house, my parents wouldn't be afford to the house. Albeit, my brother's 24 and I'm 20 (so we aren't quite 30 yet😂), but we pay for more than half the living expenses at home.

That's what families *should* look like when adult children continue living with their parents... In Western cultures, too many such young adults act similarly to Michael Rufano (though not quite to the same extreme).

The best thing to do is to gradually get them to do stuff such as get them to study then employment and then when they start gaining more independence then they can move out though, all of it has to be planned properly

What's wrong with him being at home at that age. There is so many serious issues in the world & people worry about that issue, wow seems bad to me. If my son wants to do that wouldn't bother me, living at home doesn't mean you don't have a life. Doesn't make you a baby either you can still be independent to. Family is more important, it is in my family anyway.

Yeah, but there is something great about being able to have your own space and a place to call your own with your own rules. Plus, you have no choice except to really solve your own problems because you'll have no one to lean on to help with chores, dealing with banks and landlords except yourself. Parents are not going to always be around to help their children survive, and old parents shouldn't bank on having their adult children take care of them because young people can leave this world anytime too. Everyone should have the experience of making on their own at some point.

LMLification people who still live at home still deal with a lot of those things, not all let their parents pay for everything, you helps from parents if needed etc. Your bedroom is your own space, Your parents took care of you, when you were ill, when you needed them, so why won't you help them & look after them when they need you. You are just being selfish.
@LMLification

Nope brbra No, none of my parents or grandparents are in facilities. My parents have their own house, and both pairs of grandparents have their own house. I have my own house. We all have a good relationship and actually do check on each other and are there when support is needed. It doens't require us being suffocated under the same roof. Just because you are all are under the same roof doesn't mean the relationship is better...
@LMLification
@LMLification 6 жыл бұрын
Emma H Dixon Yes, perhaps, but there is a difference when you have to deal with these things by yourself with no one around you. It also takes a lot of maturity and emotional stablity to be on your own because mommy won't always be there to give you a shoulder to cry on. At the same time, the adult children could die before the parents and still have to survive and vice versa. This goes beyond just "paying for everything." I am sorry, I cannot live out of a bedroom; I need my own house period, something I can really be responsible for on my own, with my own rules and sole ownership. My parents took care of me because they CHOSE to have children and wanted to ensure that they could raise me to function outside of their house eventually. They are happy for me and are enjoying their space at the retirement stage. They know I will be there when they need me and vice versa...We don't need to be under a roof together for that to happen. Plus, sometimes there are just too many adults under one roof. No, dear, being selfish woud be me cutting them out of my life, and not being in their house does not mean that. Nice try.

True. Family business should stay within the family. Unless, the person wants to confide in friends or a significant other or a counselor. But, the decision is still up to the parents. Random strangers shouldn't get involved at all, in my opinion because it's none of their business; and it's not an emergency, even if they feel sorry for the people. If I were asked about it, I would have to know more information before deciding who I side with. If the son for example is being irresponsible and immature, I would side with the parents; because moving out would teach him to grow up really quickly, and part of that is taking care of your responsibilities . But, if he can't afford it and has a job and is not a burden on his family; or has a disability that makes some parts of life difficult without help, then I would side with the son. I see no shame in living at home in those conditions. Both my brother and I are adults who still live with our parents, and those things apply to our lives since we are both looking for work; and I have autism. Even though I'm high functioning and pretty independent most of the time, and I want a lot of the same things most other women my age want (except kids no offense); I would and do still need assistance with some things no matter what. So, if I got my own place someday it would need to be one of those apartments where a caregiver stops by once or twice a week. Or, something else can be worked out. But, my family members and I will deal with that when the time comes. Same with my brother, except he's not disabled. We also enjoy living at home for now, because we have extras that we wouldn't always have if we were out on our own; like T.V. and internet for example, and fun events with Parks and Recreation for me, etc., and our parents love us.

I did two doctorates. When I was in the middle of obtaining my MD, I was about 31 and my family kicked me out because I was "still in school and indecisive" in my 30s. It made an already difficult process so much harder. Things are okay now, but I am no longer close to my family. I moved across the country and hardly speak to them anymore. Dont do this to your kid.
