Moghedien is my personal favourite of the Chosen, and genuinely in my top 5 favourite WOT characters, in part due to how similar her prose is to Nynaeve, who is my favourite WOT character (I also love how 'human' her character is; it's really refreshing to see a villain expressing fear, uncertainty, and tenacity like Moghedien so often does). I'd absolutely love to see her in the show, but I can definitely understand merging her with Mesaana, especially since they're both very pensive characters, who operate behind the scenes, scheming. Loved the vid, btw! :)

@@DanielMartinez-lz3ot Yeah, ideally I'd prefer Moghedien as a standalone; what I meant was: if I had to merge her with another character to save time and resources for the show, she shares enough character qualities with Mesaana that they could feasibly be made into one character without destroying a lot of the plot lines / character beats surrounding both characters.

I always thought Asmodean should have survived until the Last Battle to help defeat the Shadow. Sort of like the embodiment of that saying people are always saying "no one is so far gone in the Shadow that they cannot return to the Light." We kind of get it with Ingtar, but I think it would be impactful if one of the Forsaken defected. I do realise RJ probably wanted to get rid of Rand's teacher, though. Also I was hoping hear your thoughts on Taim, the "new" Forsaken. Still a good video, though.

Agree with this. I also think there should be some impactful characters that were secretly darkfriends besides Black Ajah or turned Ashamen. One of the great generals maybe. Bashere would be a gut punch. It would make the compulsion of the generals at the last battle even more impactful if one of them wasn’t being compulsed. It just felt like, with this giant army made up of people all over the world, there weren’t any people in power that were dark friends besides magic users and some random nobles.

My issue with cutting Aginor and Balthamel from the EOTW confrontation is that you wouldn't have a proper season ending climax then. The gang would just run through the Blight, reach the Eye and find the goods and that's it? And if you come up with something else for the dramatic encounter/fight we're getting a bit too close for "changes just for the sake of changing things" IMO and there's a risk it just wouldn't work as well as seeing the first free Forsaken. I think they should be kept because you don't really achieve much by cutting them and instead introduce unnecessary problems by doing so. Since their roles are so minor you wouldn't save that much money by cutting them and since the scene in the Eye still has to happen you wouldn't save time either. Also, even though Osan'gar would work as a standalone forsaken who was simply introduced later, Aran'gar kinda needs Balthamel for context to understand why her situation is so unheard of. It becomes kind of awkward if she just "happens" to be a woman who channels saidin and begs the question that if it's something that can happen, why wouldn't the Aes Sedai know of the possibility and why wouldn't they have prepared for it during the long history of the Tower? It being a punishment from the DO nobody even knew could happen explains it all neatly. I hope that instead of cutting them, they spend more time *talking* about the Forsaken during the first season. Really build them up and explain why they are a big deal. When they encounter shadowspan Moiraine can tell them about Aginor who's the one responsible for them in the first place and so on. You could also make the change from the source material here that Aginor and Balthamel were always a "team" of sorts, with Balthamel providing Aginor with human test subjects by giving him his "leftovers" when he was done with his women and so on. That way when you end the first season by having them actually show up it signals that shit has actually started to hit the fan and the Forsaken are free again.

I totally agree with you that we should see more Demandred and see him in Shara. He could take Be'lal's place in first books and then flee to Shara.

Good breakdown. Keep them all. Aginor and Balthamals deaths in Eye of the World, doesn't cost more than a normal actor and they don't come back with same appearance. It is good with some bad guys to kill off and the early deaths give them a chance to show on screen what balefire does and how it might eventually destroy the pattern.

I’m apprehensive about combining sammael and rahvin. Rahvin killing mat and having mat come back when rahvin was killed with bale fire not only is a HUGE character development for Mat, it also illustrates how balefire works in a way that is crystal clear for viewers.

I think a major disagreement I have with you is that I think it's a good thing to have temporary villains that hang out a season then get permakilled. Triumphs along the way are a good thing, especially as this series has a lighter tone than Game of Thrones. If Charles Dance is available during the season of The Dragon Reborn, I'd say pay the high money he'd command to have him play Be'lal. Then you never need to have him back, his plotline is burned out of the pattern. GoT did this with Sean Benn, who was in for one season only (then one flashback later). What gets expensive is having a few of the Chosen stick around as multi-series characters.

In the show I think they should always maintain the thirteen number, like when one is killed by balefire the Dark One immediately raises a darkfriend or Black Ajah member to take their place. I think it will just reveal how inevitable the shadow is and how pointless fighting against them is until the Dark One is slain.

Game of Thrones managed to juggle over 40 main roles and over 100 recurring cast members without feeling bloated. If we assume roughly the same number of episodes and seasons, it should be more than possible to have 13 recurring baddies, especially since most of them won't compete for appearances each season. I feel like the main thing the showwriters have to do to make this work is introduce us to all 13 early on, like in a sealing of the bore scene, and spend a little time setting them up for when their big moments come. (Like giving Sammael a scene or two, when Moiraine and Perrin stop by Illian on their way to Tear)

My take before watching the vid: the only one I can really see as being skippable is Be'lal, someone else could use his plotting as Plan A, maybe Sammael or Demandred, only they survive and then fall back to their own storyline as a Plan B. (Time to watch and see John's take)

I would personally keep all 13. But if you want combinations I'll give two: Mesanna and Moghedien: Like you said they occupy quite similar roles, could definitely be combined. Sammael and Demandred: I swear to the Creator they are the same. They are both great military commanders and very powerful male Aes Sedai who joined the Shadow because they were jealous of Lews Therin. Rahvin had a quite smaller role true, but he was more unique than them with his compulsion skills and lack of incessant envy of Lews Therin. Unique points of Demandred and Sammael are not their personalities it is just what they do. You can just delete Demandred, give "always the 2nd best" backstory to Sammael and then instead of having him killed in Shadar Logoth have him escape to Shara and do Demandred's story from there.

Spoilers: I think Demandred should be the ruler of Tear that rand fights in the dragon reborn and instead of Moiraine killing him with balefire, he barely avoids it and travels away to Shara where we occasionally see him and get more of his adventures in Shara. I think this would introduce him earlier so we know a little more about him, and gives us someone to fight in the dragon reborn that will stick around and be important later.

umm Nynaeve, as an Accepted, defeated Moghedien in Tanchico. that being said, Demandred is killed by Lan, so stop re-writing the books, it is bad enough that Amazon is taking a racially diverse book and making it "racially diverse du jour," under representing South Asian and Latin American races. (screw that latinx crap) as well as just re-writing the story to suit directorial artistic license. Jorden would hate this, no matter what Sanderson says.

I'm for keeping and expanding all the forsaken, and I don't think it hurts the show, which at a minimum should last 6 seasons to get to the last battle. They are what makes the shadow interesting, rather than having mindless monster hoards. And if it's introduced early on that there are 12 forsaken, it can become a guessing game in the show as to who they all are. They can also do something in the title sequence, similar to how GoT shows what castles are going to be featured, they can show hints as to what forsaken are going to be in the current episode. Syringe for Semirage. web for Moghie, sword for Baal, transparent dress for Grendael, ect...

Like you could give Demandred most of the "Overthrow Kings" plots the others get involved with (Rahavin, Sammael, Belal) Ishamashel Could just have most of his normal stuff Lanfear the same as Ishamashel Messana/Moghedian can get all the sneaky spy underminning stuff Grendal could get more of the "Overthrow Queens part" along with your thronesy stuff Finally Asmodean can get alot of the minor forsaken badguy fights, either getting reborn by the DO or just barely escaping until he gets captured by Lanfear to teach rand

I think, and I can't stress this enough, it's incredibly important to consult with and seek direction from trans people when deciding what to do with Aran'gar. Depending on how it's done, it could potentially amount to an affirming representation or a harmful transphobic trope. I don't remember exactly how it was written in the books. But the framing that she is a predatory villain with a special ability to conceal her identity and pass undetected lends a certain weight to the die before cast. We want as many people as possible to be able to enjoy watching this show. Are you feeling lucky?

In the books, Halima still channels saidin, so you could see that as Aran'gar being a trans man (or as close you can get with a man put into a feminine body as a joke by the dark one). They'll definitely have to take a different approach in the show.

I don’t see anything about arangar being transphobic in the books. It’s been a while since I read it, but it felt like it was, at least partially, the dark ones idea to put a male forsaken into a female body as a way of infiltrating and spying on aes Sedai. But even if the dark one did it just to torment the forsaken, how is that a transphobic idea? He’s taking someone who is one gender and putting them in a body of the opposite gender against their will. In my opinion, that doesn’t really make arangar a trans character. That being said, I do agree that they should consult with people from the trans community who will have their own ideas and perception from their experience. It’ll not only be very valuable to the story, but it’ll help prevent some people getting offended which is the last thing that I want to happen. It would also be necessary if they are taking the character of arangar in a different direction, to be more inclusive and representative to the trans community.

Aran'gar was, because of his womanizing's and patriarchal past, ironically, reincarnated as a woman out of sheer malice, spite, and a sense of evil humor. I just finished my first read of the entire WOT series and have to say, I think that a 50% reduction of the Forsaken would be a welcome occurrence in the series. I found that, as I have a business to run, have a house to clean, and need to do things like bathe and eat, I was unable to keep meticulous records of the number of WoT characters and their relations to each other. I found myself wondering, during the last battle, who some of the characters were and how I had been introduced to them. Which book was that? How do/did they know Rand/Perrin/Matt? It would be nice to have a story with the same bones but dress it in a way that is followable for the average person without a Glenn Beckian chalkboard.

But as for Semirhage The role of true speaker keeps her alive the entire time without any chance of her being destroyed because what comes to the assassins trying to kill they don't try and kill the true speak of the trying kill Tuon And if my memory serves me it would lower their eyes to kill the truth speaker and it wouldn't even be worth their time it would be more of a victory to kill the Empress so I think that the truth speaker aspect would be perfect instead of a nobel just for that sense of she has impunity in that way the same way she had impunity before 2 or to call

I feel like clearly Demandred would be a good substitute for Be'lal and then he vanishes for a long time after. Maybe fill in a bit of that massive gap where he's off doing random stuff that comes out of nowhere in the final book. He's good with a sword and essentially has literally the same backstory and rivalry. He would absolutely take him of sword to sword with minimal powers to test himself against Rand especially if there was the ulterior Calandor motive to the fight. Win win for Demandred. Either he beats Lews Therin in a non powered fair swordfight and prove's he's better, or he grabs callandor and the forsaken plan works.

I just finished Chapter 52 of EoTW - I think the fact that two throw-away Forsaken fight our heroes as a build up to fighting the supposed big-bad is fine, I think they can even show their rebirth immediately after.

Keep all 13, I'm crazy optimistic. But drop ALL the resurrections, it's too confusing visually. AGREE Aginor - simplify him, and all we'll see of him is "Dashiva", no res/name change. AGREE Asmodean - expand his role, a nice contrast with Jaskier the Bard from Witcher AGREE Balthamel not in EOTW, escapes BUT has ALWAYS BEEN A FEMALE who channels Saidin, a secret weapon born that way no res/name change. Be'lal - give his plotline to Fain, and nobody dies by Moiraine, he escapes in TDR. So Fain was once really Be'lal, I mean he's WAY scarier than most of the Forsaken, upgrade him! AGREE Demandred - keep, expand, show a bit of Shara. And/or make him Taim. AGREE Greandal - more fleshed out (hehe I got that joke). AGREE Ishamael - expand him, but all we see of him is Moradin, no res/name change AGREE Lanfear - but she never dies by Moriaine, super wounded, no res/name change. AGREE Mesanna - everything you said is perfect, she the bomb AGREE Moghedien - expand, no amalgamation Rahvin and Sammael - no amalgamation, because you need a couple throwaways, but do make them more distinct from each other. Need a couple baddies of the season. AGREE Semirhage - expand her. Merge her with Lady Suroth. I realize I'm taking two cool kills from Moiraine. So she gets to kill Asmodean instead.

They should definitely not show anything to reveal Demandred's whereabouts before he brings the Sharans to Tarmon Gai'don. The whole Taimandred fiasco was too obvious and Demandred should have been put in Shara right from the beginning. They may be able to use the Taimandred idea as a red herring to throw viewers off and they could actually make Demandred Asmodean's killer and keep it secret as was done in the books. That would be an interesting twist for those who have read the books. They could show Demandred in various dealings in the Westlands, but nothing about Shara. The Sharans should be kept a mystery until the end because their arrival to the war was the biggest "HOLY F#CK!" moment in the entire story. It was like 2X4 to the back of the head and it brings serious doubt about the chances of the Light winning. Demandred's acquisition of Sakarnen could also be shown in a way that does not reveal any other info. The viewers could learn more about him and he could be presented as someone who could have been a hero for the side of the Light, perhaps even the Dragon under different circumstances. This could raise questions about the validity of Rand's position as the Dragon Reborn.

I agree about no Demandred in Shara before they show up in the last battle. Just have him pop in from time to time and nobody really knows what he is planning. I was thinking the Sharan army showing up would likely be an end of episode moment during the final season. How cool would it be if that next episode started with a few minute montage showing his rise to power? That way the Sharan army showing up is still a surprise, then we get the context that the main book series never gave us. His story in Shara is actually a really cool one that should be told.

I think 13 Forsaken are too many for the TV series. This number works (for the most part) in the books. I think it is a bit impracticable for the TV series. Below is how I would combine the Chosen. I posted my thoughts before i watched Jon's video or read other comments. The i will see if Jon and I (or any of the other posters) have the same thoughts. Combine Aginro & Balthamel. After Rand kills the combined Chosem at the Eye of the World, do not resurrct either of them. Save resurrection for only Ishamael. have Mesaana watch the Aes Sedai rebels as well as the Tower faction. Also, those nights that she interferes with Egwene's dreams, Egwene cannot remember her dreams. Aran'gar was ineffective anyways and did not accomplish anything. Likewise, have Taim's minions attack Rand without the help of Osan'gar. He also did not do anything. In fact, he was killed by a midling member of the Black Ajah. Combine Moghedian and Semirhage. Have Nynaeve battle Semirhage in Tanchico over the Domination Bands. Semirhage basically does not appear in the series until Tuon arrives in Ebo Dar. I would also eliminate the mindtrap arc and Mogi's capture. The mindtrap is a form of mental slavery. We have an another type of slavery in the adam. Also, rather than have Nynaeve capture Semirhage, Nynaeve can learn some of the weaves that she forces Moghedian to teach her, Elyane and Egwene by observing Semi channeling in the World of Dreams. Also, Nynaeve can overhear Semi talking about the trap Rahvin will set for Rand in TFoH. Nynaeve will then go by herself to save Rand. She will be so angry that she her block does not interfere with her channeling. Combine Sammael, Taim and Demandred. First, have Demandred rule in Ilian. He can also kill Taim and take over his personality. Per RJ''s notes, he initially planned for Taim to be Demandred. Instead of having Sammael die by Mashadar, Rand can be planning to ambush Demandred with balefire. At the last second, he balefires Liah. At this moment, Demandred realizes he needs to retreat. He vanishes to Shara and start his activities until the Last Battle as will as his activities in the Black Tower. If the TV team wants, they can make it appear as if Rand thinks he did balefire Demandred. As a result, I would have the following 10 Forsaken: 1) Ishamael/Moridin; 2) Lanfear/Cyndane; 3) Mesaana; 4) Aginro/Balthamel; 5) Demandred/Sammael/Tain; 6) Moghedian/Semirhage; 7) Be'lal; 8) Rahvin; 9) Graendal/Hessalam; and 10) Asmodean

Cut Balthamael, Be'lal, Demandred, Mesa'ana and Semirhage. I would merge Balthamael and Be'lal into Aginor. Have him be the only one who shows up at the Eye and survive badly hurt. That way, when Moiraine balefires him in Tear the two would have a history since he tortured her at the Eye. He can return as Osan'gar. As for Aran'gar there's no need for her to be a reborn Forsaken. She could be an experiment of Aginor or even better make her Breyan, Isam's mother. Since the DO made Slayer out of Luc and Isam, why not have Aran'gar be some mix of Breyan + X. Demandred can get merged into Sammael. Sammandred would start first in Illian and later on he would go to Shara after Rand bested him the first time instead of dying to Mashadar. Mesa'ana can be replaced by the ultimate Black Ajah all she does is hang around in Tar Valon anyways. A new character who is basically the Cadsuane of the Shadow if you will. And Semirhage can get merged into Graendal. Bang, we're down to 8.

My guess, if they are cutting any, will be Asmodean. Eliminating one of the weakest and a teacher to Rand. They will use Logain for teaching up until the point of teaching ancient weaves. Maybe using one of the more powerful Chosen to defeat the others and the Dark One.

A'rangar's very existence is very, very bad trans people representation. (Pretty terrible in tbe implications that it's a punishment from the Dark One). That could cause problems in today's days and age. Maybe we'll get a bit of LTT and Lanfear, and why not her speach (or Ishy, won't be both), in the companion animated series mini?

Your pronunciations are so strange, it has me genuinely confused as to who or what you're talking about sometimes. Who is "A dhaumm" and "Moheadian", and what is "Saj den"(Do you mean Saidin?). I'm not trying to be rude here I am genuinely having a hard time following :S
