Agreed it's tough getting used to a wheel when you have been using a controller since forever. I am still faster on controller, considerably, but thats most likely due to me not being able to adapt as easily. I went the full deal, shifter and pedal set (but no seat, no room unfortunately) and the hardest thing in the world for me is changing down gear and braking at the same time, my brain stops working, so annoying (I can drive in real life so you'd figure I'd be a natural).

Kinda late to this, but the biggest difference is that with a wheel you can easily fix mistakes because you have an actual feedback from a car. With a controller, you need a lot of experience so you can predict what is going to happen and how the car is going to react in certain situations.
@grahamh97885 жыл бұрын
I feel like the controller might be more nimble because you can turn to the left/right extremes as fast as the game will allow basically, but you lose a lot of control and presiceness. I also believe the wheel is more fun, more of a challenge, and capable of being faster with practice.

I’ve been saying it for months. There are many people on the controller who have broken into top 5 on leaderboards and I can only get top 10 on a wheel. The reason you see more wheels on the top is NOT because the wheel is better but because the people who generally put the most time and dedication into the game are using a wheel, but if you put the same amount of time in on the controller you will be equally as good if not better. I know someone who races karts in real life who is actually faster on pad than he is on his wheel which I find pretty hilarious
@Super_GT5 жыл бұрын
I still don't agree. If you put an equal amount of time/dedication into both, the wheel trumps the controller. You can also see with the tyre wear test that controller users can't compete on that front. That alone is a massive win for the wheel.

High quality video, but I submit that you missed a couple major point here. Wheels do wonders for immersion, therefore enjoyment for many people, and more importantly, the muscle memory from a wheel translates much more directly to real life than a controller. In terms of sheer performance in the game, I think you covered everything, but the broad question "which is better?" I think should have included some other factors. Maybe not. Just my two cents. For anyone interested, I am trying to gather clean racers in Forza Motorsport 7 so toward that end, I'm planning on holding a small cash prize tournament (Fifty USD total prize purse with fewer than sixteen competitors, a hundred USD with sixteen qualifiers) sometime in the indefinite near future. Interesting note about the controller. I found it slightly harder on the controller although it does depend exactly what kind of slide I guess.

The thing is with controller, 100% of lateral input, controller assists means that you instantly reach the limit of the tyres, if you find the perfect line, it's very easy to be extremely quick. Wheel means you have to search for it yourself, but you have way more granular control over throttle brake and steering inputs. Generally I'm way more consistent with a wheel but I can be equally quick with controller.

Juraj Benak i know a lot of people say Forza isn’t built for a wheel but I play with one (not well but that’s true with a controller also!). I would love to se a comparison also from someone who doesn’t stink like I do.

This is a really good comparison video, well done mate, it’s good to see something like this as I’ve really only just started using wheel myself and it’s good to see what the difference is like with certain circumstances, well done

Good luck driving a formula 1 car without TC and ABS with a controller. Here are quotes from the new F1 regulations: "Anti-lock braking systems (ABS) are not allowed - brake pressure must be controlled by the driver’s physical input only and not by any other system." and "Transmissions may not feature traction control systems, nor devices that help the driver to hold the clutch at a specific point to aid getaway at the start of the race." good luck.

Re: tire wear, play cockpit view on the controller so you can see the wheel position. You'll find you're turning the wheel too far, sliding the front end. You do this a bit in racing, but not to the degree that you do with the controller from another camera angle.
@MarcusLindblomSonestedt784 жыл бұрын
True. You're often faster turning 80% rather than 100% on the controller. That's probably what causes the tyre wear. I wonder if it can be mitigated by the game or if I just have to git gud. 🙄

Speed sensitive steering helps but it isn't a magic bullet. I watch the wheel as I race, helps tons. Typically the best way is to slow down a bit or just tune the suspension for a tad of oversteer. If it's set right and you're going the right speed you won't understeer and eat the front tires. I tune my cars to oversteer slightly under power, so low power is no sliding, mid to high power is oversteer depending on the curve. Keeps from eating the front tires as with the controller it seems *most* of your steering is controlled with throttle. There's almost no way to make the steering a fixed ratio with a controller.

From what I have seen and being an avid racing game player, the wheel and pedals offer more sensitivity vs the limited range of motion in the joysticks and triggers thus giving you the player just that little bit more control over braking turning and acceleration this results in the tire wear difference super GT has shown
@utg0015 жыл бұрын
should have also compared the variation in lap times in first test. I used the last 8 laps to calculate standard deviation and found that the Wheel SD = 0.2487 Controller SD = 0.2795 Which basically means controller is slightly less consistent than the wheel
@Super_GT5 жыл бұрын
I did mention that the controller was less consistent but didn't quite go to your level of detail of course.

I'm playing racing games with a wheel since 20 years already. The first force feedback wheel I've bought was a Saitec with the old Joystick port on the soundcard. It felt impressive and I've beaten every one who was playing with Pad, Keyboard or even analog Joysticks. Especially in Colin McRae Rally 1. :-) I'll never forget this feeling. But I also had a PS1 with Gran Turismo and there was no wheel. After that the PS2 came out and GT4 was the best game ever with wheel support for the Logitech G25. It was a dream came true.

I dont know how many time u spend with the wheel yet, but i can tell you: If u spend same time with wheel and controller, the wheel will be faster and more consistent. Its just a matter of precice input of steering aswell as throttle and brake. But it will take time, and it will take lots of it, thats for sure. If u think just buyin a wheel will make you way faster, thats sadly not the case.

Great Video as always Super GT! I know people say that FM7 is a controller game but I'd like to see Super GT make the same video comparison in FM7. What do you all think?
@S7ev3n_5 жыл бұрын
It's not that the wheel is smoother, it's more precise because it has a larger range of motion, which makes it easier to be consistent and faster. That is also why the wheel get less tire wear by allowing you to prevent tire scrubbing (turning the front wheels beyond the point of lateral grip causing them to slide/scrub slightly across the pavement). When on controller, if you push the joystick all the way to one side it does cause a little bit of tire scrub in every corner. You can tell how bad the tires scrub in corners by how loud the tires are screeching. It's easier to tell this by turing up the tire volume.
@Sev8265 жыл бұрын
Interesting, the difference with tyres is staggering! Great video mate. I just ordered my wheel, so i'll be doing the same journey
@Setrany5 жыл бұрын
I think no tirewear benefits the controller largely. Wheel shines when you have an unstable car, because it requires far lesscorrection, and thus uses less tire and less fuel when correcting.
@sportbikejesus Жыл бұрын
First. it’s amazing how smooth you are with a controller. So many controller users wiggle the cars and it’s irritating to see. (I’m not talking about the poor connection phenomenon - that looks even worse) If you use a wheel, you’re driving a sim. If you use a controller, you’re playing a video game. You may be fast but it’s as lifelike as Mario is for jumps and hammer swings.
@stephendee78395 жыл бұрын
I think you should have done this experiment on a track that you are familiar with but with cars that have difficult handling charcterisrics to emphasise how much easier it is to manage challenging driving conditions with the wheel.

To be honest, aside from all the positives of a wheel, I just want one because of the pain I feel in my fingers using the DS4. I feel it would be much more comfortable to use a wheel for long sessions and few people talk about that.

11:52 You can clearly see that on stream guys who told "Push throttle harder" weren't joking. You'd set your pedals properly. On straights you sometimes have only 90-95% of throttle, so loosing time.

For me it's most noticeable when driving cars that are insanely prone to understeering at even the slightest turn. A lot easier to control with a wheel. Also recovering a vehicle you've lost control of is much much easier with a wheel for me at least
