Welcome to TRC REX, our first-ever car build series! In this episode, we give our low-mileage 2004 Subaru Impreza WRX STI a new set of shoes! By taking the STI's, (extremely-worn) original OEM BBS wheels to Western Powder Coating for a full prep & coat, they come out looking better than ever!
Lastly, to lock-in the freshness of the newly-powder coated BBS wheels, Anthony preps & coats them with GTECHNIQ C5 Wheel Armour!

...depends on the amount of prep needed to get the wheel ready. I'd guess $60-$100/per wheel plus the ceramic coating. Not sure if the high gloss coat costs more...

6:54 wheel weights need to go on the outside lip....otherwise the front brembo calipers will catch them if their mounted on the inside...not speaking from experience of course.... as for tires, there isnt too many tires that will beat the stock bridgestone pontenza RE01 for oem tires... I guarantee the ones you put on wont beat the stock potenzas .

...sounds like a lazy previous owner... I have DWS06 on my '19, and I HATE them...from day 1 (2200 miles on the odo) and I've had a persistent, speed related vibration that wasn't there w/the OE Dulops. Even w/2 new "complimentary" tires, the vibration is still there. Plus they are noisey. Wheels look good.

I just bought new wheels. So you're suggesting I should have tires mounted and balanced first before coating them?

Have you guys had issues in the past with different coating, where the weights will not stick? Personally I would coat the wheel then have the tires installed then balanced, this way if a tire had to be rebalanced, there wouldn't be a bare spot where the coating did not cover.

Turned out great! Have heard its best to paint/clear a forged wheel vs powder coat. Not sure why. Maybe possible cracking during the baking stage?

Low temperature powder ~200 degrees Fahrenheit is ok, however most powder coating shops use the higher temperature process. The 6000 series aluminum does not like additional temperature cycles and it changes mechanical properties of the material and can lead to future issues. This is a fact and not a myth.

Back in the Nasioc days people would say to not powder coat these forged BBS as they couldn’t handle being baked again at the higher heat. No idea what truth there is to this but would love to hear your powder coat guys opinion!

The great majority of cracked BBS wheels that I have seen have all been powder coated. Some were coated more than 1 time. Some become brittle and after several times the heat cycles can make them soft.
