Worth giving a try as curb rash on 4 tires was an estimated 800-1200$. I was thinking of doing this, but concerned about possibly leaving rim unbalanced with bondo. also wife’s car has 2 tone paint with high gloss black in between spokes. Will be interesting. I just know them curbs come right back at ya later 😛
@DannySebahar Жыл бұрын
The weight of the metal that was scraped off will be heavier than the weight of the Bondo you apply. Bonda is pretty light and its purpose really is only to fill in holes. Once you have applied the Bondo you sand it down to the level it was before the gouge. Only the gouge will be filled in ideally.
@dridex2236 ай бұрын
you can always go get your wheels balanced when done, still cheaper than buying new wheels or getting them fixed. if you believe it’s necessary that is.

I didn’t even know you could fix that stuff on your own. Made a dumb mistake when I was younger (knew I’d nick the curb but for some unknown reason decided to keep going anyways.... not my brightest moment) and got a small area scratched up. Everything else is perfect, so it’s always bugged me, though not enough to pay someone to fix. Now I can do it myself!

This is a first-rate instructional video. Thank you very much for posting it. I do have a QUESTTION about Clear Coat. Recently, I restored the wheels on my C5 Corvette using the process described in this video. For the most part, they look beautiful! I used "Dupli-Color High Performance Wheel Coating, Gloss Black" for the Paint Coat. However, I did not apply the "Dupli-Color Wheel Gloss CLEAR COAT". By not applying the Clear Coat, will that create a problem in the future? Thank you to anyone who feels compelled to answer my question (:

No one is interested.
@davida871 Жыл бұрын
Sorry no one provided feedback sooner. Clear coat is a protective layer for UV damage so black gloss may not last. Lightky scuff with 400-600 to remove gloss to matt finish then respray black gloss then clear with 2k from Eastwood and your set.

Looks fantastic and what a fine job! The only thing is any paint cans supplied in the UK piss out of the can sideways and leave large paint drops on the surface. Yours looks great though!

@Fenrir111194 жыл бұрын
This is a very interesting video but you need to be very careful around the edges. If you grind past the lowest point of the damage you are making it thinner and sharper. So if you hit a pot hole after the tire will go into the lip and get cut. You also end up changing the shape of the wheel. So you just need to be careful depending on the type of damage you have. It may be best to have them professionally finished depending on the severity.

Lots of good info! I’m restoring some old Honda wheels that have curb rash and pitting from de-icer. I used a lot of these steps and products except I used glazing putty so I didn’t have to use hardener and I also had to let all the air out of tires so the index cards would slide and stay in place.

@Kokomo3653 ай бұрын
There are some epoxy paint pens made for this that will match well. Clean rim, file and sand damaged area, clean again, apply, then sand area to blend and polish. If you need to repspray the whole rim you should use a 2K clear coat for better durability. A 12oz spray can is only $20. Also avoid using any reinforced fillers or epoxies with steel filings that could react with the aluminum alloy. They are hard to sand smooth and blend also. Just use a clear 2-part 5min epoxy.

When rattle channing your wheels it would be better to keep the can vertical than allowing the can to go hotizontal. Try standing the tire on the tread or leaning the tire /wheel against something. Paint one top section at a time as you roll it forward. Try utilizing one of those snap on handles on your can for improved control.

Fun fact: Don't forget to set your e-brake on and use some chock blocks or a regular old brick to prevent the vehicle from rolling forward or backwards on you. Trust me "you'll thank me later". Cheers 🍻
