The expensive ones tend to be milled from forged aluminium with a tight compact grain, where the cheap ones are cast with a porous grain.
@i.am.ghost.
@i.am.ghost. 3 жыл бұрын
It doesn't matter the aluminum that's made of. Should be light that's the reason for them using aluminum. Cheap and light. The only thing that matters is to have perfect parallel faces reported to the center axle Porous grain doesn't do anything wrong.

I put 1 1/2 inch wheel spacers on my jeep in the front and back (made in America of course) And the spacers ended making my front end shake like I had death wobble. Took it in dreading all my links needed replaced. They couldn't figure out what it was the whole time. They popped off the spacers and drove it down the road and it drove fine ever since. The spacers were not damaged in any way or form. Just some how caused my front end to shake like crazy.

Watched the whole video and not once did you mention anything about "hub-centric spacers" being the better buy. Nothing wrong with ebay spacers as you said, I run 1.5" hub-centric wheel spacers Also an important note is to always use LOCTITE.....Always....
@LiftedSilveradoBuild
@LiftedSilveradoBuild 7 жыл бұрын
Yes although those 2" spacers will put a hurting on your bearings... 1.5" is usually the max people recommend. Safety wise you'll be fine just use a tiny bit of removable loctite or just check the torque every once and a while but not after loctiting them. They should be fine if you use loctite (just put them on, torque them down once and forget about them), but they can be a botch to get off. Snapped 2 sockets trying to remove mine after a year both snap on. Better then losing a wheel down the highway :p

Hub-centric is the next really important term/type after made in the USA and warranty. Hub-centric wheel spacers keep the weight off the wheel lugs and on the hub where it is carrying the weight as it should. Thread locker is another one for those leaving the spacers on, red is intended as a more permeant install but blue could be used and still allow the spacer to be removed. Some people use it some don't, not required but worth considering.

Robert, about that sort of thing, ya think they would make some sort of locking bolt system, or something, sort of like a locking washer system, why not, my thinking is this., if people are going to be concerned about vibration and it loosing, then that heavy metal could be made with some sort of locking bolt, instead of locking washers, or both? just a thought?

alright people listen up. if you want to know the truth about wheel spacers here it is. wheel spacers cause premature wear on ball joints and wheel bearings. why? because they are moving the wheel farther out which puts more stress on them. that is a fact. if your okay with that use them if not dont

The amount of threads engaged is used in calculations for holding force required. So, if you use the spacers that do not bolt on, and you are grabbing less threads on the original studs, you risk failure.

Good point I've had a friend that put cheap spacers on his f150 and had his passenger side wheel fall off while driving in town and had to replace the the hub then he again used another set of cheap spacers and had the other front wheel fall off at 60 mph coming off a curved overpass needless to say lesson learned and that that you should do a lot of research on a set of spacers if that's something you're looking into.

Whilst having to rectify a bodged 3" body lift done by a previous owner and lowering the body back down to the chassis I notice stress cracks in the black alloy wheel spacers exactly like the ones in your video. After spraying some welders crack detector on them these cracks turned out to be even worse than I thought. I have since removed all the wheel spacers and fitted standard wheels back on to the vehicle. In future I will not be buying a pick up truck which has had a vehicle lift. There are some horrific videos on you tube of wheels falling off.

there is a hidden problem using the wheel spacer buyer beware. there is stress on the front sway bar. the better look doesn't give me a good reason just to make your wheels stick out. just imagine when you try to bend a flex rod. the wider the rod, the more energy require also, energy distribution becomes less and the tire will wear faster. after hundred miles with the spacer on the front wheels and no spacer on the rear wheels, you will see the difference on the tires wear pattern. hundred dollars will get you more problems on pinion ball joints and a costly new set of tires.
@teabreak4t
@teabreak4t Жыл бұрын
I could not agree more. I have had to spend hours rectifying a bodged 3" body lift done by a previous owner and get rid of the oversized wheels. The spacers had stress cracks and the power steering box was also badly damaged and had to be replaced. Not to mention a lot of damage caused else where by this bodged up vehicle lift.

@AB-80X 8 жыл бұрын
Spacers that are not bolted on are perfectly safe if they are installed correctly. If the wheel is a bolt-on, you need longer bolts. If the hubs have studs and you install the wheel using nuts, you need to disassemble the hub and install longer studs. On top of that, they need to be hubcentric. Also, never use aluminium spacers without steel inserts.

@TundraGuy

@battosaijenkins946

@Tundra Guy, you forgot to mention another reason why spacers shouldn't be used. It's for the simple fact that wheels that stick out a little farther out than factory specs will get mud and all that other crap on the sides of your car a little more, at least on lighter colored vehicles. So why do it? Don't. =(

As a machinist these wheel spacers are fine as they're lug centric. Don't use them if you're carrying over 10,000 lbs plus the vehicle's weight. Hubcentric adapters are the only option carrying heavy loads. These ones are more suited for what he's doing.

The Honda wheel spacer looks like it's a cheap casting. While the black spacer is most likely a billet aluminum spacer. Remember this, aluminum will crack and break apart with no warning. no matter if it's cast or billet aluminum, (billet aluminum being much stronger) Their is a reason as to why no auto manufacture uses aluminum on the wheel hub assembly!

Will D lug nut torque is not specified by the weight of the vehicle. it is determined by the size and metal grade of the bolt it is being attached to. that being said the manufacturer determines the size and quantity needed for that vehicle. for instance 1/2 ton has 5 or 6 lugs where as 3/4 ton has 8. they are both same lug bolt and torque just different quantity for weight variances

Lol. I saw a video on KZbin where someone said wheel spacers where bad and unsafe. But he wanted to put jeep Cherokee rims on a renegade. So instead of spacers or buying new rim. Bad advice, It is about how a wheel spacer is build, in the example the chinees one similair can also be build in the US or other country. It is about the quality of the wheel spacer how it is constructed NOT WHERE IT COMES FROM and the warranty they will give. So the last words are correct.

Chase, yes for sure, that area right there you think would be and should be a tad thinker. it sure seemed this for a stress area, which that is. and when that goes, the crack is almost what would be expected, I mean to say, at at least 70lbs of torque should be fine for about any car or SUV with at least 6 lugs or so. not sure i would use loctite though. and about that 100LBS, that seems high for almost any car.

Just make sure it's a good quality steel spacer with the lip around the center for your rim to center itself on. (Hubcentric) . I am sure there are some quality spacers made in other countries. Just do your research and make sure they have a lifetime warranty. And AVOID the spacers sold on ebay that are made in china!

READER / VIEWER DISCRETION MAYBE ADVISED, AS CONTENTS ARE HONEST AND MAY CONTAIN WORDS THAT ARE STRONG AND DIRECT, AND CAN BE LESS THAN AGREEABLE / LIKEABLE. YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED ABOUT THE CONTENTS OF MY COMMENTS, SO YOUR NONSENSE, RANTING, NEGATIVE COMMENT(S), ETC ARE NOT WANTED. Although alot of chinese made products are not good, but worse than poorly made chinese products are ones made in, Sri Lanka, India, Bangledesh, etc. I have come across alot of cheap, greedy, ignorant, awful people that are from such places such as, Sri Lanka, India, Bangledesh, etc. there are some that are decent, but most are not decent people. Although I have come across some bad chinese people, I have come across many nice chinese people, it would be nice if all chinese people could learn and speak decent english, before coming to north america. There are some chinese made products that are decent quality, and they do exist. Although my comments might not directly relate to product quality, the mindset / personality speaks alot, and does have impact on products, reputation, and etc. when applied to. For those that don't agree with my comment here, I already know that most of you are the type of person that look to cause troubles for hard working people, with your trouble making ways, of being, cheap, greedy, ignorant, etc.especially the ones that write responses that have criticisms, opposes honesty, etc. Although some of the chinese made products are made with decent quality materials, its simpler to stay with Canadian, American, or european made products, which are quite well made, and is good quality. Theres a reason why good quality things costs more, and is worth it. There is a reason why cheap quality things costs not alot, and is not worth it. Good quality brake parts, such as pads, rotors, shoes, drums, costs alot more than cheap parts but, also lasts alot longer too, and also less visits to the shop. Cheap quality brake parts, lasts significantly less, and is cheaper price too, so more visits to the shop. Good quality high cost brake parts can last 2 to 3 years. ( 1 visit to shop ) pay less for labor, based on number of visit. Cheap quality low cost parts, lasts 6 months to a year. ( multiple visits to shop ) pay more for labor, based on numbers of visits. This principle also applies to tires and other car parts and non car part items as well. If you agree or like something about the the things I have said, click the like button, Thanks. So your saying spacers should be illegal to use? HECK, if they were that unsafe, they would be illegal I would think, but they are not, right? KYLE, then, why did you state that they were very dangerous then, why are they dangerous?

Dont do it unless the manufacturer is okay with it. Or better still dont use the damn things at all. Get a wider vehicle. As soon as you alter the dimensions of a wheel assembly like that you are putting a lot more strain on the bearings, axles etc. Do you really want a spacer failure at highway speeds or round a fast corner ? Think about that.

The instructions for the spacer called for 100 ft/lbs, and then to torque the wheels to spec.

Well that's fucked cuz you will warp your rotor if you do it that tight
@eVoLewis
@eVoLewis 8 жыл бұрын
not to sound like an ass hole but just so you know why. with 5 lugs at 100lb that's 500 pounds pulling on the rotor. witch is fine until you add the heat from heavy braking.

Is not about where the wheel spacer is made, is how much do you want to expend, if you pay 100 bucks for a spacer made in China I highly guarantee that is made about same quality as made in US,not because is made in china means is bad,remember!! you get what you pay for!!!

the wheel spacer for your Honda cracked because its torque spec is 80 ft lbs, not 100 + ft lbs
@TundraGuy

Correct... BUT, the spacer called for 100 ft lbs, but the honda wheels call for 80. That spacer was going to fail no matter what, I consider myself lucky it failed when it did and not on the highway.

+Tundra Guy oh OK I see. yes I'm very glad you didn't put that on your vehicle and end up wrecking it or have a major accident where you got hurt. Was that one of those eBay spacers made in China? I understand that companies want to maximize profits by having cheap manufacturing costs and use China, but we gotta draw a line somewhere. Some items that influence your safety or well-being shouldnt be made overseas without proper quality control. a lot of this offshore manufacturing really needs to stop and a lot of the products that come out of China are utter garbage. I find it ridiculous how after all the advanced technology we have here we end up making our stuff overseas in a country that could care less about the quality and standards used to produce those goods. Glad to know that you're safe and that you put this up on KZbin so other people can learn from your experience.
