S shaped plant hangers from hardware stores make great caliper hanger

The aluminum rims on a Jeep worked loose and damaged two studs before I could safely exit the interstate. I stopped at a parts store and bought all new studs and extra lug nuts. Man that was a chore changing them with ratchets. I had to stack washers in order to tighten the studs. Man was I glad I had that two foot long breaker bar with me. I know I torqued those rims after a tire rotation. I even torqued them again after 50 miles but one of the four still managed to work loose. Now, I torque all those wheels before I go on the interstate.

That is a great point. Looking at tires & making sure they are secured is good practice. As well as, topping off the fluid & making sure your spare & tools are with the car. Thanks for watching & keep wrenching!

Hub flange, probably, got buggered up a little bit. Also check your rims. Where the lug nuts make contact. And the centering of rim to hub. 3 types of the most common nuts. Tapered,shouldered and ball seat🤔

I've done this type of job for many years. Advice # 1 impact tools are quick, but they cause a lot of damage. Do the job by hand. It takes time,but a more secure installation. #2 remember that impacting force can damage the hub and the stud, knurling.

@donmunro1448 ай бұрын
A little common sense goes a long way. I've never damaged a stud or hub using an impact. In fact doing it by hand may not seat the stud completely. Especially if it's on a non drive hub like the one he was working on.
@iamredrunt1728 ай бұрын
Yes impact devices are quick and simple. Great for production shops. Through my experience. I snugged in with impact And then I took a long breaker bar to do the final tightening. Finally check with torque wrench. I used to do this stuff at a high end wheel shop. Mercedes,BMW,Audi,Ferrari,etc etc etc. That's how I was trained.

Thank you Kenny! I appreciate you and your helpful advice. Those extra tips you give from your years of experience are extremely helpful for a DIYer like me. And great timing on this one, I think I have a bad wheel stud and was just going to replace the one, but now, thanks to this video, I'm going to replace all the studs on that hub, just to be safe. Thanks again.

Some may suggest anti-seize around the hub before installing the brake disk.
@samfeldman15088 ай бұрын
I came here to say that. But I think Kenny is in NC? I’m in the Mid Atlantic and the brine used on the roads in the winter will almost certainly fuse the hub and rotor without anti seize.

up in north here i like to throw some kind of never seize or spray rust preventer between the disk and hub so it does not wind up rusted on from salt corrosion. and between wheel and disk it can get really seized on there we had guy who drove on beach and saltwater spray seized everything together he could not get wheel off.

I've done this many of times. Obviously get the correct studs. The best way is to press them in. Those ,on the flange installers tend to stretch the the studs. And they never get truly seated. Gotta road test and re torque the lug nuts. If the vehicle has aftermarket stuff, throw, everything out the door. Trial and error.
@steffenmanderla76317 ай бұрын
Whenever I installed new wheel studs I always used one nut per stud that way the nuts would not really get damaged.

Torque doesn't change but thread resistance and rotational force would change considerably.Hence you are right taking into account the end result.

I have had someone install a set of Chinese wheel hub assemblies before and when it came time to remove the wheel. All the wheel studs in the hubs would turn with the wheel nuts. What a pain that was to remove the wheels.

How did you do it?
@merrillschaps23258 ай бұрын
@@ginog5037 It took many hours with a torch and had to carefully torch off each lug nut.

Hooks to hold calipers are available on Amazon pretty cheap. Plus they're brightly colored to make it less likely you'll leave them behind when you're done.

Hondas are a pain to change wheel studs. It’s easier to change the hubs.
@jimmieroan98818 ай бұрын
its amazing to me that most people don't realize the center hole and axle/rotor are how a wheel is held on, then the studs and nuts fasten it. after market wheels sometimes have a bigger hole and then you have the studs and nuts holding the wheel in place. and what i see more often is someone swapping wheels from one application to another with the holes bigger. guess over the years that got bypassed
@GTIFabric8 ай бұрын
It is called hub centric. The wheel is centered by the fit to the hub and takes a massive amount of stress and wear away from the studs or lug bolts. Adaptor rings are available to correctly fit wheels with a larger hub diameter.

Why are there two small holes in the brake calliper on the part where the stud holes are located?

Threaded holes on rotor. You can thread a bolt in there & use it to press the rotor off the hub if the rotor is stuck in place. Thanks for watching 🔧
@rogerrossman51248 ай бұрын

Kenny the Tacoma owner use too much anti sieze that is the reason stud broke
@TheJcrandazzo8 ай бұрын
Not the anti seize ,,Its the torque value used in tightening. Yes its easier to over torque with a lubricant.
@stevewhite34248 ай бұрын
@TheJcrandazzo If using anti-seize knock 25% off the max installed torque, If you go to full dry torque you have grossly overtorqued.
