Thanks for that. I've always quite fancied an XJS ever since I had Corgi ones when I was a kid. They can be massive money pits but tidy, low mile cabrios are fetching quite strong money nowadays.

It was an entertaining series and I enjoyed it. I've never believed the prices they used to quote though. In one episode you could see that the car had clearly just had all new brakes installed and yet they never included that work in their expenditure list.

Thanks again for these 2 cars! I am surprised someone hasn't swapped the plate of the VW that must be worth a grand? The XJS was a basket case back then - I had one in the mid 90's and could see the suspicious looking sills on it. Those rusted out all over the place. I remember the repartee between the dealer and Mike because Mike tried to "walk away" and the dealer said go on then!

It looks like the beetle was taken to a number of different MOT. Stations if you notice mot stations numbers when it kept failing so.perhaps found a more lenient inspector to get a pass ?

The failures on the beetle are basically saying the metal work is so thin that its flexing and could cause a loss of control, you usually get it when the car is going rotten around the brake master cylinder and when you press the brake the force of your foot on the brake pedal causes the body to move

I like these videos even though they generally have a negative outcome. (Please take no notice of some of the negative commenters). They prove a point, which is that Wheeler Dealers is the kiss of death for a long term car restoration, probably because restoration is the wrong word when applied to the WD platform. The cars are just repaired, some may be as complimentary as to say re-furbished, others may say bodged. There are so many things faked, how can anyone believe the actual numbers? As some correctly say, you can spot loads of new parts fitted to the cars that are not included in their totting up. It's a shame because I've watched every episode from the very first and used to really look forward to the next series. For me, the series died when Edd left, I can't abide Anstead, and although Marc Priestley seems a really nice guy, not much of the workshop stuff he does is really believable.

I only personally know of one of the WD cars, the Volvo P1800S, that was so bad the owner who had it in 2015 when I came across it had had to strip it completely and start again doing a complete restoration.

So did mine, its in the video. Anything that was registered pre DVLA computerisation in 1983 can have dubious description, it was manually input off old log books. I doubt anyone would have rebodied a Karmann to a Beetle!

Hi dude….. I’m a kiwi living in Queenzland Australia…. There is no such thing as an MOT or a WOF (warrant of fitness) required in Queenzland!!!! The only thing one has to do is when selling a vehicle you have to provide a road worthy certificate…. Basically stating that the car is allowed to be safely driven on Queenzland roads!!!! So in practice you can buy a brand new or second hand car with a RWC…. and drive it until you die!!!! No annual checks or fitness requirements!!!! The only thing that can stop you is if the wooden tops pull you over and they fined that the car is not up to Queenzland road traffic regulations!!! So it’s up to the car owner to maintain the car and not the responsibility of the state!!!! I bet that comes as a complete shock to you!!!! No nanny state in Queenzland Australia!!!! We have that in the UK now for cars over 40 years old. Not required to have an MoT but if you get stopped and its not roadworthy...

I reckon the VW failed MOT and then they tried another garage to get a different result! Back in the 80's that could happen. Not sure you can get away with it in this computerised age....?

I don't know for sure, but imagine when you enter the car for the test it brings up its history... which gives the tester a check list

@@oscarsgarage447 It doesn't work like that, if you log onto the mot computer to do a test it doesn't show you any previous tests unless your doing a free retest Dealers still do as the comment above mentions, book a car into several garages hoping one will not notice a failure

You find me a vw beetle that isn't bodged together 😂 I can't stand working on those miserable things and it just solidifies thay wheeler dealers bodge up vars and pay off mot testers to get them on the road and sold. The whole show is a farse. And I can bet my bottom dollar that XJS got used for banger racing

That VW had so many MOT fails because it is a VW, those cars are hopeless. Even their new models suck and have issues even after 1 year of ownership, and their engines are almost all quite bad, i.e. wear and excessive oil consumption.

As a person I've always thought Ed was an OK guy. But even in the show he didn't seem to do much a lot if the time, he did some good stuff like some body work, but even Mike said he was lazy and didn't want to do anything. Or, he just just uninterested.
