One thing i dont think you guys touched on was the aerodynamic qualities of the cores and how that extra airflow can cool down the bearing, preventing deformation of the bearing and reducing friction in the bearing, and not just core size but also spoke shape can make a huge difference in the performance of your bearings, especially if your strut doesnt cover the side of the wheel as much. Also, the air gaos in the core can allow dirt to pass through it with the airflow which can effect how much dirt gets into your bearing.
@FlowSkate

WOW. You just blew my mind. I never considered how the core could affect bearing performance. Especially, with regards to the cooling effects.

Sort of an inexperienced question. How inter-changeable are wheels on frames; like a Seba wheel on a Rollerblade frame?
@jonatanguitar
@jonatanguitar 7 жыл бұрын
I think they're 100% inter-changeable :) But if anyone knows better, please correct me!

Wheels are all interchangeable between brands. However your skates will have a maximum wheel size.

Hey Shaun, I always watch all your videos just because I love you guys! I'm at a point now where I've got my own opinions about wheels so don't really need generalized advice, but I will agree for sure that a smaller core and thicker urethane makes for a nice ride. Really liking hockey wheels these days for that reason. Question: at one point near the middle of the video Gabe mentions (and shows the evidence) that the type of wear he incurred on some Seba 82A wheels was much smoother and more even after he learned to skate better than it had been when he was more inexperienced. Wondering if you or he would like to elaborate sometime on how stride technique and/or "form" affects wheel wear? Details about the weight transfer from one foot to the other, foot placement, direction/length/intensity of push; but most importantly how does the sensation, the feeling, change when you've learned to stride without grinding up your wheels. You could save people some serious money! Thanks always for all you are doing! Adam
@FlowSkate
@FlowSkate 7 жыл бұрын
Thanks Adam. As you improve your technique you tend to use your inside and outside edges more evenly. Inexperience skaters tend to put a lot of wear on the inside edge and as the wheel crowns will sometimes pit.

J B -. I'm not sure if you were looking for advice from me, but for what it's worth I have been seeing much less uneven wear and pitting on my wheels lately, and I think the most significant change has been that when I transfer my weight from one skate to the other, the skate I'm putting down is really under my body, which puts it slightly on its outside edge. this means that when I push off, the power of the stride begins before it crosses the center edge so by the time the inside edge is really engaged, I'm about ready to transfer weight again. I also notice that when I'm primarily pushing off rather than concentrating on transferring the weight, I hear the wheels scrubbing the pavement, so I try to make that sound stop. Helpful KZbin channel: BackwardSkater. check him out!

Very nice! Interesting with your comments about sore knees. These last years I’ve been getting problems with sore knees, making me jump less these days, so maybe it’s time to reconsider going down below 84A?
@FlowSkate
@FlowSkate 7 жыл бұрын
I was really surprised to find that the soft wheels helped by knees. For one, the soft wheels soften the impact; two, the soft wheels offer more rolling resistance and the extra effort helped strengthen the muscles around my knee.

I am only at the 12 mins mark but have you ever rode on wheels that are like bouncy ball? In otherwords, if you throw the wheel onto the ground, it will bounce back like a bouncy ball. You used to be able to get bouncy balls at like vending machines. I hope you know which bouncy ball I am talking about.

@HarmonicaMustang

The boot should have some flex to it so you can absorb the impact better. The frames preferably should be metal as plastic will have a higher chance of breaking upon bigger impacts (although this means the skates will be a bit heavier). As for the wheels, 90mm and above with a hardness above 85A should work fine (depending on your skating style and braking technique). I suggest doing a front rocker (making the front wheel slightly smaller than the other 3) which will help prevent tripping when running into rocks and other obstacles.

Hey Shaun, I appreciate you get a ton of questions so it's a bit of a long shot that you'll get time to answer mine, but here goes anyway. It's wheel related so I chose this video to ask on. What do you suppose could be causing flat sections on all wheels on both skates? At first I thought it could be from drag stopping but I only do that with the same foot (left). My theory now is that I'm too heavy (210 lbs) and landing after jumps is literally squashing the wheels and causing flat sections. Could it be that? The only other thing I can think of that may affect the wheels in this way is the very uneven surface I skate on - it's tarmac but it's old and has an undulated wavey surface, like a corrugated roof! Anyway, thought I'd have a punt at a question to the expert 😊... Thank you for the great videos; they're always very informative and well put together 👍
@FlowSkate
@FlowSkate 7 жыл бұрын
Hey Buddy. I wonder if you get flat spot from the drag stop and then when rotate your wheels you end up with flat spots on your non drag foot. I have never seen wheels get flat spots from uneven surfaces or from jumps.

Thanks Shaun, really appreciate you taking the time to respond. I think I'll have to try a new, less destructive, way of breaking when I get some new wheels 😊. Thanks again and thanks also for the wonderful videos; they're incredibly helpful and really get me fired-up to go out and learn more 👍

Can you make a video explaining how does effect adjusting the frame on skates? Another question.. how do you absorb the landing of a jump when going backwards? Do you have to spread legs in a v shape like when going frontwards? Remember the Greg Mirzoyan commentary The video where i got the question kzbin.info/www/bejne/Y3ayhZqjg8emj6s

Hi would it be alright to inquire what wheels i should try out? I am currently using 80mm/80a and it feels a bit too grippy. I'll mostly skate for cruising and getting to places, if ever. Thanks!

There are lots of great 80mm wheels to try out. I really like Seba Street Invader because they "feel" great. Street Invaders have great shock absorption and grip. However, they also slide nice. How much do you weigh?
