Wheels Wednesday | Ep. 8 | Foam Unit

Welcome to another episode of "Wheels Wednesdays," where we talk all about the many interesting vehicles that the San José Fire Department uses during firefighter operations! In episode eight, SJFD's Fire Captain Asha Wagner and Fire Engineer Daniel DeAguinaga show us the one and only Foam Unit, a specialized apparatus that responds to hazardous-materials incidents that require large amounts of foam, such as tanker truck spills and large aircraft fires.

As this apparatus is over 40 years old, any plans to replace it with a new unit?

As of now, there are no plans to replace this unit.

It would not need a replacement since it rarely goes anywhere and is in great condition

Was this specifically bought for SJFD or was it repurposed from another agency? Only asking because it's Yellow.

Good question. This rig was purchased for SJFD. Most rigs before the 1990s were yellow before San José transitioned to all red.

What does SJS mean on all of your apparatus?

Each agency in the state has a unique identifier; SJS is ours.

Why does this truck have amber lights or is it just red and over time it got discolored

This is one of our older rigs; the amber lights are an old style of lights that were more common back in the day.

Why yellow lights

We're not sure what yellow lights you're referring to, but because this vehicle is quite old, it most likely has to do with that specific time period. Hope that helps!

So this rig has a siren and a Opticom but amber lights. Does it run code 3? If so its not up to CA Vehicle for an emergency vehicle. Red lenses are not that expensive.

Yes, this rig does run code 3. It does have red lights in its light bar; however, in the video they appear more amber than red (not sure why). In person, they are more visibly red and so are up to CA vehicle code for an emergency vehicle.

@ i hope if its get retired someone buys it and keeps it in running order. Its a classic
