It would be very interesting to see these racing machines tested on a dyno. As built back in the day. Maybe run a WTT HP competition and compare some stock builds side by side. I'm sure the builders and racers knew what they were doing. I would love to see WTT validate their efforts in a video someday...Keep up the great work!

Good stuff! I'm an old guy, but back in my dad's day, he and his buddies were taking 80" flathead flywheels and building stroker Panheads. Way before you could buy anything you wanted from S & S, they made it.

Great stuff. Just in case, no oun intended....I've some pre war british stuff. The mag chains can look loose cold, but at running temp the case expansion takes up quite a lot of slack. Dont set it too tight cold.

Very cool. Have you ever opened one up thinking it was all there and realized all the gears, cams, pistons, etc had been pilfered by someone else years ago? That would be disappointing.

Many years ago some guys that were building custom choppers would take the internals out of the engines because all they were was trailer queens made to be pushed into the custom bike shows then pushed back into a trailer I remember reading in a old custom chopper magazine from the late 60s early 70s . I think what the deal was is that they spent so much money on chrome and custom paint jobs and customizing the whole bike they didn't have enough money to actually build a running engine for them . Myself I would never do that just because I would want to be able to drive it after it's completed and at least enjoy driving it some rather than pushing it around on the floor of a show or into a trailer lol but according to the magazine some guys were doing this .

We used to use 421 Pontiac Super Duty sodium cooled valves in knuckleheads. Some guys used Chrysler Hemi. A little machine work went a long way!

I'm gonna get Dragonman (Yes, THAT machinegun central Dragonman) to build my Evo engine, and everyone even the biggest oldskool prewar, knuck or panhead freak will tell you that the EVO was the BEST engine HD ever built!. And use all the tricks like cutting the flywheel right down, lightening everything and all the porting tricks. That guys rates on machine work are so affordable, it's like he's doing it for a public service!

Good Day Matt. I really enjoy your videos, the enthusiasm you pour into these videos is as cool as the bikes you guys' highlight! Just a thought as I watched this particular episode, with so many projects on the go, have you ever thought of doing a monthly or every couple of month's, a bike project update? A few minutes on each bikes progress or even lack of. Maybe somethings that you get hung up on. After all, the restoration shop is where your technical knowledge and skills really do shine! It's a goal of mine to own a vintage bike, heck, I'd be happy with a new Indian if I couldn't pull of the vintage bike. Is your annual bike draw open to us Canucks? Keep up the great work!

Hello, Matt. What happened with the red 1948 panhead you got at the swap meet 10 or so months ago? I don't think I saw a video about that one again. Love all your videos by the way!

It looks like that was a fairly fresh rebuilt engine specially tuned to get all the power it could make. Probably done just after the war from a pre-war race bike. That would explain why the engine doesn't match the frame. It should run great once you put it back together.

Racer mentality: How can we make it lighter and perform better, but still have some degree of reliability? I know, lets shorten the skirts, keep the bore and lengthen the rods and increase the stroke. Strip the frame and make some stability improvements to the front end. Hey what about polishing the ports? machine some huge intake valves to boost fuel volume. I got an idea let's drill out the gears and reduce the rotational mass, it should spin up faster. HD sees the potential in raising the final drive by reducing the oil reservoir to get this monster to lay down on turns at speed. Brilliant. You think that we are all that today? A doctor I work with told me we are standing on the shoulders of giants. Max Verstappen complained about being held up, that it cost him 3 TENTHS! That is what separates the winners from the mid pack. Peace from West Texas. Love the passion for the craft.
