It really is the combination. Kemp is a pretty normal last name. Kelp is fine, it’s seaweed. It really is the ‘ elmp ’ that makes it terrible

i feel like the name kelmp came first and the rest of the character was shaped around the mouthfeel of it. it's like an onomanopeia for something wet hitting a surface but slowly and with non ease, there's too much tongue needed to say it. when imagining it in text it's a whole different font to the rest. truly, a fantastically horrible word. thank you for this

i think the reason kelmp is such an uncomfortable word to say, doesn't sit right with your mouth, is cause it starts with the "l" and you put the tip of your tongue to the back of your front teeth, and as the "m" comes, your lips shut. "kelm" itself isn't that bad to say, but as the "p" comes in, you build up air in your closed mouth and release it for the p sound, which puts your tongue and previous position at a VERY uncomfortable spot

“Too many consonants” Here I am, a Dane, like “...that’s so easy, what do you mean?” For real though, I found it so hilarious how they choke, basically, every time they had to pronounce Kelmp, which I found so easy, that I literally decided to make it even crazier. I added more consonants, removed all the vowels, and then, for funzies, I also came up with a new first name consisting only of vowels and no consonants.

Yeah, it feels like a Scandiwegian name that was to confusing for the southerners so it got Anglicised. I've said in other comments, it sounds like a perfectly normal Scottish surname to me, with a question mark over whether it is pronounced phonetically or with a secret "sch" in there somewhere.
