I really cannot understand dog owners like him. We take our 2 collies to that beach and always put them on lead when the horses are around. These spaces are precious to all of us, and we need to share them safely and with good grace. I'm so sorry a wonderful ride ended this way, Tara 💛🧡

Not only do they let dogs be uncontrolled around horses, but also around wildlife such as seal pups on the beach and seabirds such as terns nesting on beaches and sand dunes.

Takes training and constant reinforcement to have a great dog. Could be the dog wasn't't use to animals so big and instinct kicks in but the owner should never allow this to happen. They make very long leashes so you keep control. Sometimes you have to file a police report to get the owner to wake up.

Owners with off leash dogs is usually egotistic reasons. Free to bring their dog anywhere and off leash. If dog gets into trouble and you retaliate back for whatever reason the egotistic owner got a chance to boss and threaten you. Also if owner gets confronted/threaten then off leash dog may defend them giving owner a bigger window and excuse of they were in danger and you in wrong.

That's not true all the time. I have a Border Collie who is the sweetest dog but he freaks out when he sees horses. I never let him loose around horses because he just freaks out. He is otherwise very sweet and gentle.

Would you let your kid act like a lunatic when it saw animals? Or would you teach it how to act around them?

Gillian and her mount, You and Bella, showed so much control, maturity. The owner was redirecting his fear to anger as suspect he knew he could be held liable for having a dangerous dog off leash. You have the video to prove it. And he was lying as yes, mounts and their riders are allowed on the beach. Proud of all 4 of you. Both of you should be reassured of your steeds behavior. Some horses would have kicked out as an instinctive response to that attack. Your mounts are indeed very special, as are their riders.

It’s not the dogs fault that its owner failed to train it (and we humans need to keep in mind that dogs are still wild in a sense, and they can only be domestic if trained and raise to be so)

I’m so glad you were there for Gillian to give her comfort and reassurance that she did nothing wrong. It was so fortunate that you were there for her. Both horses handled this so well. Years ago, ( 30 years ago) when I was riding in public places. A kind police officer gave me the best tip. He said ride with along stick or whip. Not for using on your horse but to be able to place between your horse and the dog, keeping everyone safe. Followed this tip and saved my horse and me from injury and that of dogs. As just swinging it back and forward was all I need to do to scare away the dogs without anyone getting hurt. My horse were beautiful quiet and trained that waving objects around there bodies was safe and in the progress everyone safe. Dogs are not kicked and horse not bitten, and I stayed on.

I’m probably going to upset people with this comment, but if a dog was aggressive toward my horse on the beach, and a dog owner was nowhere in sight to contain it, I rode (cantered) straight *at* the dog. But wouldn’t get anywhere near it. Because the dog would run far, far away. Embarrassed that it “lost”. But bark from a 300m distance. Rather than a 3cm distance. Nobody would ever get hurt. And the dog quickly learnt what could happen, if they tried to nip a horses hind leg. This was also 30 years ago. I’m sure if that happened today, someone would film it to make it look like the horse rider was doing the wrong thing… Ps. I’m a dog lover. But won’t put one in harms way, if my horse decided to kick out.

This may sound like the wrong reaction, but i have dismounted, rather quickly, and gone after dogs that have accosted my horse. I'm sure i sound and look like a beast chasing a dog. My friend got thrown from her horse during a dog attack. Both rider and horse were hurt. I guess a quick assessment would be necessary to know what would be the safest thing to do. I do know both times this strengthened the bond between us. Thank goodness for videos.

One thing I've learned when dealing with a loose dog is to always face the dog! Even if you have to stop or start spinning your horse round and round to keep facing the dog. Dogs instinctively go for the hindslegs. Never let dogs go around your horse, always face the dog!

I had a similiar event years ago on Filey beach. I teased and led the deg a long way till it was ready to drop then we turned and ran it ragged. Bandit the ex racehorse was well up for the game. The owner was frantic when finally he got his dog within shouting distance.

My dog is generally amazing with other animals, but if he charged people on horses I would be mortified. You could have the best dog in the world but they can do unexpected behaviours, so even if the guy came over and said 'I'm so sorry, I didn't think he would do that/we didn't expect horses and he's not good around them' ANY sort of apology would be better than pretending it's the non-aggressors fault. I'm glad both of you and your horses are fine, and in the worst case scenario that family saw everything/you have a camera of the incident.

I have owned both horses and dogs. Whenever I walk my dog on the beach and horses are also there, I make sure that my dog is on a leash. He's been around horses and is very good, but I don't know how the horses will act. You have to take responsibility for your dog.😮

I almost got attacked by a dog in year 7. The dog was around the same size as the one in the video. It scratched my legs while trying to reach my face. If the dog was any bigger, it 100% would’ve bit my face. Im scared of them now, and whenever I see a dog on the same footpath as me, I cross the street immediately.

We have a lovely blue staffy, already tested the dog on lead around horses & cows so we know the dog naturally keeps away from horses & cows. We always keep the dog on a lead if horses are around as the dog is likely to panic & run away.

I am surprised he didn't come running over shouting it's friendly. That's what 90% of people with dogs off lead do. We had so many issues with our labrador. We always keep him on a lead and he was attacked multiple times by off lead dog's. When he was two year's we got a dodoberman and now people cross the road when they see us. It's actually funny because we bumped into a couple who's black staff went for our lab before and he come steaming over. Our doberman was just over a year old at this point and when I am saying she launched him about two foot in the air. It ran off screaming and then the owner started saying we had an out of control dog, even though as stated ours are on leads. We went and reported it to the police and showed them the video captured on our camera. They stated that any dog that is off lead and doesn't come back after being recalled is classed as an out of control dog. If you take this video to your local police they could in theory reprimand the dog. It's just a shame that due to idiots not knowing manners you need to walk around with body cameras these day's.

So many irresponsible dog owners who don’t realize or care what their dog can do without proper control… I have a rescue dog who is terrified of other dogs, and is constantly swarmed by off leash dogs whose owners aren’t paying them any mind or just continuously repeating “oh it’s okay they’re nice don’t worry!” Not only do I have to worry that I will have to break up a dog fight but I also have to soothe my dog and continue trying to repair the damage to her trust and psyche

The dog owner should have immediately caught up the dog. What was he thinking? A rider has to calm the horse whilst maintaining control. The riders would then be able to move on and he would then be able to release his dog and enjoy his walk. Besides the horses are allowed on the beach. What if that dog had turned really nasty?

It's way passed time it was made law for dogs to be on a lead in public places, as in some other countries. With the advent of extending leads the dogs can run around but still be in control because off the lead, they aren't. I'm at the other end of the country and there are several beaches so I've seen it countless times, that a loose dog sees another one runs after it to play or fight and neither dogs take any notice of their owners. There's one beach where dogs aren't allowed - not that dog owners take any notice, they just don't care about anyone or anything but their dog.

This exact thing happened to me when i was 10. I was on an empty beach, it was me on a pony and my mums friend on her horse-as well as my mum,dad and brother. It was winter time as it was fairly cold so beaches are empty mostly. Except this time it was us and this man with his bull terrier off its lead, he was fully aware we were there as it was only us on the beach. The dog then ran up to my mums friends horse and bit its tail-thankfully not its bone, and proceeded to then try bite the legs. Meanwhile mum had grabbed me off pony with brother onto a large rock hoping we would be safe as we were both very small. Both horses behaved well even in distress. Meanwhile the fully grown man who should have control over his dog slowly strolled on down the beach while most of us were screaming. My dad was trying to grab the dog meanwhile,the man started swearing at us. He’s lucky our horses had been trained otherwise that dog would’ve been dead and more fool the owner.

my dogs would love your horses they may be hounds but they have been brought up with most animals and protect them never chase they even live and sleep with roosters that live in my house .
