The reason people flipped out over Shadow getting a gun is because of a 2005 game called ‘Shadow the Hedgehog’ where they wanted to appeal to an older audience… for some reason the devs thought this meant ‘guns and foul language’. The game came off the back of Sonic Heroes… right now, go and look at the intro for Sonic Heroes and then the intro for Shadow the Hedgehog. It is absolutely mental, it takes such a hard turn that you’re almost spinning in circles… and the community loved it. It is so over-the-top, so insane and so ridiculous that everyone was hooked… and then you play it and it gets even worse! You can get an ending where you snap Eggman’s neck or even one where you shoot Sonic with a handgun. You saw Shadow teleporting around the room, you saw him fly and you see that he’s as fast as Sonic… HE DOESN’T NEED A HANDGUN, LET ALONE A BIKE! But he uses ‘em anyway, add in his brooding personality and black-and-red colour scheme and boom! There is your edgelord master of the emo community XD

A lot changed with Maria's story. She was originally sick with an auto immune disease in the games but clearly having a child die while in quarentine wasn't going to hit the same after certain things happened. This had a weird domino effect on other things that changed like an entire space colony no longer existing and Rouge not having any reason to be in the movie because the stuff she discovered in game was so tied in with Maria's backstory. Yet they still managed to make the movie work in spite of that. I was actually impressed with how well it pulled it off.

The domino effect is a good explanation of it. Things had to change in adaptation. There's only so much movie real estate for the details, and if something isn't crucial to the story they're telling, it's best to not try to shoehorn it in only to then have to spend time explaining it and connecting it to everything else. And if you don't do that effectively, then people are going to go, "Okay, but what was the point?" Probably not fans, because they'll know what the point was, but *other* audience members.

I totally get what you mean about pleasing your inner child. Shadow was a huge comfort character for me as a kid, I was a girl into video games back when video games were considered a “boys” activity. So I was alone and ostracized a lot as a child, and Shadow reflected a lot of what I was feeling deep down. Seeing him get SO much love this year and connecting with other people who love him too has made me feel so… at peace.

My buddy had his sonic shirt. We saw a later showing and it was a wild night. There was maybe... two kids? But the theater was SOLD OUT. So many sonic fans. So many shadow plushies. It was such a great experience. The third act was very reminiscent of Cap saying "avengers assemble" or all three peter parkers in No Way Home about to throw hands.

I got to see Sonic 3 on opening day and got a free poster of Shadow! I'm very pleasantly surprised that the amount of human characters is greatly downscaled. As much as I loved their side plots in 1 and 2, they took up a lot of screentime in comparison to the main characters.

I think it just worked better here because they were actually doing stuff to drive the plot whereas in Sonic 1 and especially 2 they were so reactionary. I don't mind them being there. They just need to actually be on the adventure is all. Have Tom collect pieces of the master emerald and throw hands with Rouge, have Stone make a pact with Black Doom, etc. etc.

If they had done all of that, the movie would be much better. As is, it's certainly not bad and there was a lot to enjoy, but with those inclusions, it would have been way better.

There is a level of love and respect that went into making these movies that the fans know is there, even without watching any of the staff interviews. You can tell by the little nods and tributes they throw in here and there that are a "if you know you know" thing and if you don't, it doesn't disrupt the flow of the movie. My only real complaint is that the tonal dissonance caused by Gerald Robotnik got really distracting in the third act. I get that Jim Carrey wants to Jim Carrey, but I feel like the line, "You're no Maria," should have been the pin-drop moment where all the silliness stops and Gerald goes full menacing. It's just so jarring to have an extreme close-up of Gerald with red tear-soaked eyes grieving over the body of his granddaughter, and then not ten minutes later have an extended joke where he repeatedly spanks Eggman with a giant CGI robot hand. That being said, this film turning out so well is a testament to why source material should be respected. The director got his start in the industry animating the CGI cutscenes for Shadow the Hedgehog. The guy who animated the Sonic Mania opening was a producer. These people CARED.

I’m not a massive Sonic fan, but I love the movies. That being said, I could just feel the love of the Sonic franchise radiating off the screen. One thing I love about the Sonic movies is how, no matter how unconventional the castings are, every single actor nails their character. Jim Carrey as Robotnik? The MVP of all 3 films. Ben Schwartz as Sonic?? Enderingly quirky and charming wirhout being overbearing and obnoxious. Colleen O’Shaughnessey as Tails? I mean, she’s literally *voiced* Tails in the games, so she was perfect casting. Idris Elba as Knuckles?? Absolutely hilarious. All that being said, Keanu Reeves as Shadow was the best casting in all of the Sonic movies. He manages to be truly menacing while also sympathetic. When you realize how Grandpa Robotnik has been using Shadow’s very real, very raw rage and grief over the death of the only person who saw him as something other than a weapon or something to be used or controlled, your heart genuinely breaks for him. Despite Keanu having a very distinct voice, he truly disappears into the role and makes you feel for the character not because it’s Keanu Reeves voicing Shadow, but because Shadow is a truly tragic character. 10/10, absolutely no notes, can’t wait for the fourth movie

Having struggled through awful reboots of Transformers, a suuuper mixed legacy of TMNT stuff, and the implosion of Disney and its live-action remakes of doom, the Sonic movies are a tonic to the Sega kid I once was. I'm just so heartened when the love for something comes through and it's a crying shame that's so rare as to be notable. That said, today's kids also deserve new stuff, not just reheated stuff from the era where actual original stuff was getting green lit.

I loved Maria's portrayal in this. I didn't realize how much it was needed till after seeing the film, but I hate the 'dead angel child' trope because it feels manipulative. This felt real, like she was a real kid who died for no reason, and it made the story more impactful. I also liked the Knuckles show, though I think I've only seen a couple episodes so far. I like how Knuckles is portrayed, so anything that has more of him in it I'm there for.

Especially episode 4 which is a nightmare musical directed by Jorma from the lonely island, featuring Julian Barrett from Mighty Boosh and has I kid you not, some of the best live action puppetry and practical effects I've seen. Knuckles the tv show has no right to be as good as it was but it is and I'm happier for having seen it.

There's s live performance of the Sonic soundtracks somewhere on KZbin, and during Shadow's theme song they show the video where Maria gets shot. It got a LOT of applause. I'm not surprised someone was frustrated her death in the movie wasn't "lore accurate," haha.

The attention to detail/Easter Eggs for this movie were great, its clear that the team working on it cared. They really nailed Shadow and did a legit good job with making Sonic Adventure 2s plot work in a movie. Pity the other Sega series released this year (Yakuza - on Amazon Prime) couldnt have had even a 100th of the love and attention Shadow got... it was one of those "we never played the games" type deals and it sure as heck showed...

been wanting to see the movie SO BAD after hearing Keanu was voicing Shadow, and I'm a Sonic enjoyer, but I think one of the things that kept me away for so long was the fact that we only had the "main 3" characters so far, AND we didn't have a girl yet. I didn't care which one we got, but I've been a massive fan of Blaze since I was a little kid rather than the usual 3 characters, and so I felt like it would've been better for me to wait for a few movies to come out before I start binge-watching them. I would've gone CRAZY waiting all these years just to see a character that wasn't part of the main 3. I STILL LOVE THE MAIN 3, but they were never the characters that first sparked the love for the franchise for me :') just wanted to see either Blaze, Shadow, Cream, Rouge, or Big. And I honestly hope one day we make it to see Wave in a live-action Sonic movie as well.

I convinced my teachers fo change the field trip movie to Sonic 3, and I'm so happy I did. It was absolutely joyous. The friend I was with (we hurt each other's hands with how hard we were holding) knew nothing about Sonic and hadn't seen the other two movies, but she adored the movie. I told her every reference I knew, explained everything I could, I lost my mind. My hands hurt by the end because I was gripping my friends hand so hard. I almost burst into tears over the Shadow and Maria flashback. I made them stay for the first end credits screen, and the whole theater started screaming, and I pointed at the screen and yelled, "THAT'S AMY ROSE! THAT'S AMY ROSE!" I haven't even played SA2. I just watch over people play it because I can't play fast games like that. But that movie was magical.

I got to see an advance screening of the first Sonic movie because I won tickets in a contest and the theatre reaction you experienced with the Amy reveal was pretty on par with how the theatre reacted when Tails was revealed at the end of the first one, and it was definitely one of those "you had to be there" moments. I'm not the biggest Sonic fan but I grew up with watching the anime on 4kids as a kid so I've always looked forward to these films immensely especially since I rarely watch movies in general. If you do get into more Sonic related media, I'm sure everyone would love to know who your favourite character is because there's a lot of Sonic characters!

As a massive sonic fan I don't even know where to start on how great the movie came out. There's a really interesting opinion out there in how fans wanted biolizard, space colony ark and a bunch of other plotlines added but tbh it would have made the story more convoluted and would have felt unnecessary. I don't need a 1:1 adaption of the game. The writers took on the challenge of retelling the SA2 storyline with the narrative they're building for their movies and it payed off with the respect they paid to the source material. My only gripe is that I wish shadow had a bit more screen time but ultimately happy with the. End result. Can't wait for sonic 4

They didn’t shoot a child in the movie, but they did have the folks with guns start shooting in her direction, be told to stop be cause there’s a child, and then shrug that off because “we have our orders.”

Exactly. They avoided having to show a child being shot on-screen while retaining all of the implications, the soldiers were still totally willing to fire on a child and the military was still responsible. Changes were inevitable on that front and I think it was handled very well.

They did the same thing with Witcher. Season one was a great introduction to new fans but they when off their own adaptations after season one and went down hill. It’s about respect and trust of the original work. Witcher books are amazing read and the games also bring the world to life.

I have been a Sonic fan since I was a kid. I thought I was over my Sonic phase since I have not been interested in playing the recent new games (mostly because I do not own a piece of technology that can run them). This movie has proved that I never left, I became a little kid again in the theater. I audibly gasped and sat up in my seat at the end credit reveals. After some thought, what has kept me involved in the Sonic franchise recently are the fandubs by Snapcube and the Shadow the Hedgehog videos by Lythero. I played Sonic Adventure 2 a couple of years ago, beating it for the first time. This movie is based on that game specifically and I could not have been happier than what they did with it. Are there some differences from the games? Of course there is, but it doesn't detract from the movie. They elaborated on what Shadow's life was when he was being studied and his relationship with Maria so much further than they actually do in the games and I loved it. I also understand why they changed Shadow's origins because that whole subplot is an entire game in and of itself. I was more than pleased with this movie. I am just a bit sad that I didn't know about the fan events up here in Canada because I would have loved to have a Shadow poster and a keychain LMAO.

Imo, the Maria situation here is more tragic. She didn't have any terminal illness here, so she would've lived a full life if that G.U.N grunt wasn't so trigger happy. And the fact she gets blasted to death in an explosion that knocks Shadow out means he doesn't even get to have a final conversation with her like in canon, he wakes up and she's just dead.

I took my oldest two kids (7b, 5g) to see Sonic 3. We’ve seen the first 2 a couple of times. They loved it. It was great for us adults too. Plenty of jokes for adults to pickup. Good action. A really fun family movie.

My first watch was in a showing hosted by GamesCage (Mr Sonic Hype Man streamer) and people who work for Sega and the movie there. We had Lee Madjoub (Agent Stone), Tyson Hesse (the man who saved the Sonic design for the movies as well as doing animations for the games), Pete Capella (voice of Silver), one of the IDW comic artists, and the Sonic social media manager. This showing had all these big names in the franchise along with enough fans to fill the rest of the theater. We were all screaming, crying, and laughing the whole movie. All that is to say, they absolutely knocked this out of the park and gave fans exactly what we wanted. Probably one of the best days of my life and one of my favorite movie experiences.

While i have 1 major criticism for Sonic 3, the pros outweigh the 1 con I have. They understood the assignment and for once we get a movie where they gave a damn and didn't do it for the quick paycheck.

I never played the Sonic video games, but I saw the last 2 movies because Jim Carrey chewing the scenery as a villain? Sign me up! I hadn't realized the 3rd was out but saw your video last night and got tickets to the movie today. While I'm not familiar with the source material (I think I caught a couple episodes of the cartoon in the 90s?), the movie obviously succeeds at being exactly the movie it sets out to be. It's fun, it's colorful, it clearly likes all of its characters. It has a goofy dance scene and Agent Stone continues to answer the important question What if Smithers but Hot?

I would probably have felt free to be more audible if my nearby theater wasn't not only mostly empty, but only composed of families 😭 Rest assured though, there were plenty of times you'd be able to hear my breathing change if you were sitting next to me. Plus the classic hand on forehead in disbelief move! I genuinely left the theater speechless. Looking at it as a film, I see it as a solid 8/10. As a Sonic fan, its a 10/10 for ME, and is so incredibly special to me, and I CAN'T wait to rewatch it many times when it comes to streaming!

Shadow has always been my favorite Sonic character. I knew the basics of his backstory and about Maria, but I didn't expect the movie to place so much focus on their relationship and the way her death changed him and his mever-ending grief. I thought it would be nothing but non-stop action, so I was definitely not expecting so much emotional depth. It really touched my heart since I can relate to Shadow's backstory, and so many scenes got me choked up. The action was sooooo good too! The way Shadow got on his motorcycle and pulled out his gun was soooo sick. I was hoping they gave him his gun, and my wish was fulfilled! I knew he was going to do the Akira slide because of the trailer, but I had no idea he was going to do it to slow his ascent UP the tower!!! And that was what lead up to him standing on his upside motorcyle in the sky like in the trailer!! I screamed!!! Him and Sonic using the chaos emerald to fight Robotnik and save the earth, and Metal Sonic and Amy making their first appearance was so flawless!! I cannot wait to watch it again!!

Sounds crazy to say but the best adaptations of any ip EVER were Clue the movie, Sonic the hedgehog movies, & the interview w/ the vampire tv show. ITS CUZ THE WRITERS KNEW & LOVED OR WERE PART OF THE TARGET AUDIENCE! Interview made MASSIVE changes to the source & as a decades long Vampire Chronicles book fanatic, THE SHOW IS BETER! The show runners & actors were book fans so they understand the source, can stay true to the story but get of the parts that didn’t work & add surprises that fit in w/ the lore. If you can’t do that then you have no reason to adapt & you will not make the audience happy Rule number 1 should be to write what you enjoy & somehow Hollywood has forgotten that.

I live in a smaller town and we went to the Thursday night first showing. There was maybe 30 or 40 people in the theater, not very crowded, but I don't think I've ever been in a theater that clapped before outside of the credits, and people were chearing at like 5 different points of the movie. (I was half expecting cheers when they showed Maria die, but they didn't) it was unlike any theater experience i have had before, admittedly I don't go often, but I've been to sold out showings with half the energy that was in this showing lol

I must say, I am a huge Sonic fan. I have been since SA1 on the GameCube….and the original Sonic the Hedgehog I played on a flip phone. No exaggerations, I haven’t been to the movie theaters since Star Wars The Force Awakens, and I booked a midnight viewing on Thursday (I saw the first two movies but not in the theaters). I didn’t want to be spoiled at all. I must say, I love how they did the storytelling, and the acting. They took it serious and had tons of fun, just like the old and new recent games. And I LOVE the lore for Shadow’s shoes/skating. It makes so much sense and it’s so adorable. And the action with the motorcycle, while different from the games, fits in so much. We went from the worst looking Sonic, to a truly respected (for lack of better word) representation of the games. Because I’m a huge Team Dark fan, I wish there was more of that, and that there were additional Robotnik scenes that were more serious, but I loved it regardless. Maybe not a perfect movie, but I loved it so much, and may go a second time. This isn’t relevant, but I had to go after work from an accounting job, so I matched my suit with Shadow and Sonic. I looked out of place but it was worth it. Edit: Please stream some of the Sonic games, especially Sonic Adventure 2.

Watched this movie yesterday, and I agree, it was a blast. I haven't ever played the games either, I'm just generally aware of the basic lore. Man, if only I could've gotten this kind of energy in a Witcher adaptation. That one was doomed from the start since the people directing it had barely read the books and even actively hated some of it. Also admitted to getting drunk while writing for it, which shows. Poor Henry Cavill, he was the only person trying to keep that thing at all faithful, and not a hot mess. Guess I'll just go replay Witcher 3 again instead!

I had to talk my friend into seeing the 2nd one with me when it came out, and she liked that one. She was the one that approached me about being excited to see the 3rd one so we saw it together. We went out to dinner afterwards and she asked me to explain all the different references, Easter eggs, what was the same as the game, what did they change, what other Sonic should she check out, and has been asking me all about Sonic stuff since we saw it. She has not played any of the games before, but she just loved how the movies are handling the characters, especially once we stopped focusing as much on the movie OC humans. I am honestly think I am close to convincing her to come over and watch the cutscenes from the various games so she can fully understand all the references. The movies just get the core appeal of these characters and this series, and how to balance between the inherent silliness of anthropomorphic animals, the base coolness of the characters, and letting them actually be serious, and in the nicest/best way possible, be a bit edgy without going overboard in any direction. There were some ‘Hey look, it’s Brand ™️’ moments, but they felt natural enough or in the world enough that it didn’t seem like they were trying to distract you from weakness of writing, rather using them to enhance the scene or build the world. I just loved it, and I am so ready for whatever the next project is they release in the series.

A big part I think on why the source material was handed well is due in part to the director, Jeff Fowler, and his past involvement with the franchise. He was one of animators who worked on the opening cutscene for the Shadow the Hedgehog (2005) game with even sone shots from that cutscene referenced in the film itself

Somehow convinced my older sis to watch the first movie and from there she has joined me to watch all the others. We both loved it and though we saw it at a late showing it was still just as fun being immersed!
