Meanwhile, India's global share of GDP dropped to 4% in 1950. The same thing happened in China, which was not directly colonized. In fact, China's per-capita income was even lower than India's at the time of independence. During the 1750s, China's per-capita income was higher than India's. Therefore, if we say that Asian countries are poorer because of colonization, then what happened to countries like Nepal, Bhutan, Ethiopia, and Liberia, which were not colonized? It's worth noting that Nepal has a similar history and culture to India, yet it is the poorest country in Asia. This is a common fallacy. India did make up a larger PROPORTION of the world economy before colonialism, and then that proportion suddenly shrank, but the economy itself actually grew. The proportion did not fall because the economy shrank; it's because Europe and Japan industrialised and so grew to make up a larger proportion of the world economy.

Looting of wealth barely took place, and the Empire was a demonstrable cost for Britain; it made us poorer, in fact the British economy started doing better after they gave India independence - owning colonies is a burden, empire is folly. The $45 trillion is a complete myth. India may or may not have industrialised eventually, but it certainly would have taken much longer if it weren't for Britain. Under the Raj, India saw huge increases in textile and steel production, land under irrigation, increased literacy, Western medicine, infrastructure etc. Nowhere did I say this justified colonisation, I think it was a mistake and Britain should never have got involved. Don't strawman. I'm just saying you need to actually read the history and economic data before you make sweeping and inaccurate generalisations. The reason why India is still poor is because they are still blaming Britishers for their own post-colonial failure. We have to look at per-capita income to find which country is richer and which is not. Countries like Singapore, Hong Kong had accepted British colonization brought more positives than negatives to them. Singapore’s first prime minister, Lee Kuan Yew, said that before the British arrived, “there was no organized human society in Singapore, unless a fishing village can be called a society”. The reason why India is still poor is because they are still blaming Britishers for their own post-colonial failure. If Britishers are the reason why many countries are poorer then why non colonized countries like Nepal, Bhutan, Afghanistan, Ethiopia, Liberia etc. are poorer than India? We have to look at per-capita income to find which country is richer and which is not.
