You can get potato grow bags where you have a flap on the side, gives a good indication of what is happening underneath. I harvested mine when the leaves flopped down.

I planted ten Charlotte potatoes on 5th April and have just harvested them. I just made a small hole, planted them and only earthed them up with comfrey leaves, grass clippings and chop and drop method of weeding. I had a great crop of clean potatoes. Unfortunately, so excited I forgot to weigh them!

Your potato information always helps me & gives me confidence to plant spuds each year. That video that you did with the container potatoes was the reason l got into planting spuds! That is always my go to video l usually watch as a step by step refresher lesson each and every new season! Thanks Katrina! 🌱

I’m in the group that planted 3 different varieties but only knows the name of one. I tried container planting for only one variety, the rest are in the ground. We are blessed with very rich soil and the foliage on all are robust. Next season I’ll do better and I’ll also plant sweet potatoes. Cheers and thanks for the great info.

I'm growing the same as what I grew last year "Cara" which did amaaaazingly well last year even considering the blistering summer we had. I had some really huge ones, which was just what I wanted as I wanted them for Jackets and they were so delicious. I grew them in fabric containers last year, however this year we had an old water butt that had broken, so I'm actually growing them in that and a plastic bin haha. So will be interesting to see how they turn out in comparison. In the water butt, I staggered planting them, so I did a layer at the bottom, them covered in compost as they started to grow, then a bit further up put in another layer and continued that a few more times. I wonder how they will do, can't wait to find out.

I always grow Charlotte as I like a salad potato, but they were not good last year, so I have grown jazzy this year, they are ok but am going to try Nicola next year. I have raised beds with soil & my own compost mixed in but every year all my potatoes have scab & the bed I put them in have never had potatoes, so I don’t know if it’s lack of rain or the soil, I keep reading different stories.

I've grown potatoes this year for the first time in containers and planted Swift and Orla back in early April. Swift I harvested about a month ago when the foliage started looking a bit sorry for itself but I wasn't particularly happy with the yield. Orla I left until the foliage was well and truly done and harvested them a couple of days ago. An improvement on the Swift but still a bit disappointing. I've planted some Charlottes for Christmas and fingers crossed they'll do a bit better. I don't think I shall grow first/second earlies again as when you add up the cost of the seed potatoes and the cost of the compost, for what I got, they worked out as very expensive potatoes! I've decided to try maincrop next year (in theory Valour) and hopefully the size of the potatoes will make it more worthwhile 🤞

When i planted my seed potatoes, i took some of the eyes off and left the two upper most, so i thought i will try an experiment whereby i planted those "eyes" to see if they would grow, and some of them did, and suprise i actually got some potatoes from them the other day, unbelievable. just smaller than a tennis ball.

Do you ever have issues with blight? We've had lots of rain the last month or so in the north west. I've to cut most of mine back due to blight. Just wondering if you do anything to prevent blight of if you think pots help?
@homegrowngarden
@homegrowngarden Жыл бұрын
Not often but some years it happens. To prevent it you can grow blight resistant varieties and encourage good airflow around them as much as you can. There’s not much you can really do tbh!

This is my 4th year of growing them in pots, and unfortunately will be the last. I tipped a pot out ( 1 of 4 Charlotte) last week and had a fantastic crop. But, like other years, they broke up in the pan after only a few minutes of boiling.. I've tried steaming as well, but the outer layer comes away, and the middle is still uncooked.

Never had that, once the Haulms (tops) are cut off, I leave them in the pots for a couple weeks so they harden up, especially the skins. I have harvested my first 30 litre container of Charlottes sown St Patrick’s day, had a yield of 3 and 3/4 qtr pound. Have 3 other pots with tops cut off stacked waiting to be harvested. The rest not ready yet.
