One of the most 'famous' beauty soaps of all time is a little swedish number containing egg white, called Lanolin-agg-tval. If you can freeze your many many excess egg whites until you're ready to make soap again, you could produce a really lovely cold process egg white bar, great for tightening skin and lightening age spots, etc. Just a thought.

Our son slept in our bed from birth until he decided we were squishing him, age 4. He is now 31 and a wonderful man. You can't love a child too much. That's not spoiling them. Love isn't buying them things or not disciplining them. Love is teaching them right and wrong and how you don't need mind numbing things. You guys are amazing parents. I love nothing more than seeing your boys helping Ben in their bare feet and enjoying life!!

Was listening to a phycologist. He had been to the funeral of a childhood friend. There he remembered that he had not felt great like that since his dog died when he was fourteen. The point he made was that adolescents are at a place where their feelings are more and you need to keep that in mind when dealing with them. You're doing the right thing by respecting their privacy. That was James Dobson by the way. Fences are important, not just for. His goats got through the fence and all their kale. Very discouraging. Thanks for sharing guys. Ben and Meg, I think you are wise to give your children privacy -- every person needs that little bit of solitude. My husband and I moved (with our 2 year old son) from East Texas to Central Florida, on the Space Coast. We lived in an old (but not decrepit (spelling?) for quite some time, We arrived in Florida in January of 1967, about two days before the Apollo I fire that killed three of our astronauts (we both worked at the Space Center, eventually) so that tragedy kept us unemployed for a little while, with no income to speak of (my in-laws were living there at the time so we didn't starve! lol!). Things finally did wind up again, I went to work for the local school board but my husband was a telecommunications technician at the Space Center for about 3 years. He had always loved wood working, i.e., wooden furniture, cabinets, etc., and in the latter part of 1970, we left the Space Coast. My husband did his wood working thing, and I went to work in a corporate legal office (in Orlando), subsequently working in a "real" law office. In 1973, we moved to Ocala, in North Central Florida, and rented a house for a while. We built a house, but because the surrounding property was inexpensive, the neighborhood surrounding us really went down, and after 27 years we built our present home which is on slightly more than two acres. We've been here now for more than 20 years, but my husband passed away in 2004. Our son is now in his mid-50's, has not found a life's mate thus far. My only concern is that he be happy and I 'm pretty sure he is. I was forced, medically, by severe spinal issues to retire from my job of 30+ years (at age 70) in 2015. I worked in real estate law, estate planning, business organizations, and land use law and had a wonderful boss. It's amazing how much you forget thing when you're no longer doing them. There's not a human being anywhere who hasn't had challenges of one type or the other -- that's just part of living. I think you and your family have managed beautifully. I do miss seeing your videos, because other than sewing and a little cooking, that's about all I can do. I used to bake a lot, but at my age I've naturally slowed down on that! You have to take time for your faith first, your family and your 'farm'/'homestead' . The videos have to come after those priorities are met! Best wishes for 2021. I pray that we all have a good year.

I was really glad to hear you repeat your stance on having the kids online and respecting their privacy. I don't know if it's just me but I find it weird that people obsess so much over children they don't know, especially all the comments about the baby (and the awful stereotypes about having dad/4 brothers that won't let her date etc - that's beyond weird..) I know people feel invested in your journey, as I do after watching you for so long, you've both put your personality out there and 'let us in' so we feel like we know you a bit. That's your choice as adults but man, I remember being a 14 year old and all I can say is I'm so glad we didn't have social media and digital cameras/video back then and I respect you both more for your stance on not having your children online without their permission. Also, as much as I'm sure everyone is excited to see more content, I'm glad you're taking as much time as you need. Having a new baby, especially after such a long gap, must be so much work! I hope you don't feel too much pressure and can ease back into things when you're ready.

Though I am one of the curious ones when it comes to the kid's schooling, I am so grateful to hear parents on YT consciously diverting their channels away from their kids. Too much exploitation of children happening and parents not keeping their kids in mind when stepping online with the family. I'd still like to hear how the parents manage it all, but whatever your secrets...it's definitely working for your family!

It was nice to get a new video. You all look so happy and well. In 2010 we made the same transition from So Cal to NC. It was a long hard transition for me as a single mom but still well worth the trials. It is a different world here, if people do come just know that the locals have been here on the same homesteads for generations. They are absorbing a lot of people just like we did when we lived in Calif so be kind, be respectful and be patient. It is a much slower pace here on most things.
@heatherd.93904 жыл бұрын
Beatifully answered, every single question. I especially liked what you said at the end, Meg. "Everybody lives a different life and I think that is important to remember. One person's life looks different than another and your life doesn't have to look like ours or anybody else's. Do your life in your own way, your homestead in your own way..." Truer words were never spoken. Keeping up with the Jones' is not only exhausting, depressing and frustrating, but it's pointless. Who are we all trying to impress anyways? The only people that we should be concerned about impressing is our immediate family. Oh, and go for alpacas over llamas. Friends of ours have an alpaca farm on Vancouver Island, BC, Canada and they are the funniest, cutest critters on the face of the earth, lol! Once they know who their people are, they can be very affectionate and sweet, plus their fibre makes wonderful yarn that is far warmer than regular sheep's wool, and us OG's know how much Meg loves to knit! xoxox Heather🇨🇦

I imagine after the year we have all endured there are many couples who would find your story of leaving California and an unfulfilling lifestyle very inspiring. You’ve accomplished so much in a relatively short amount of time; your home is so cozy (love the bookshelves). The tangible aspects - the renovation of the trailer, the gardens and all are impressive. But it’s the joy on your faces, the way you seem connected and how you work together that gives your followers hope. You recognized your marriage was failing and you were wise enough to identify what needed to change. And you did a very rare thing - you took bold action and added a huge plot twist in the story. I know it’s not been without it’s challenges, but as I listened to the Q&A I was struck by how successful you’ve been at building a meaningful life. Your sons and sweet daughter (soo cute) are blessed to have such an example set by their parents. They’re such nice boys - hard working and so well mannered. Of course they deserve every bit of privacy and say on appearing on videos, but they’re a testimony to good parenting. Already too long a comment but I’m just very impressed by all you’ve accomplished and I hope your channel continues to be discovered by those who seek a more fulfilling life and need some encouragement. **loving the bookshelves ***consider a senior doggy when you’re ready for a pet. We have adopted 2 in the past and they were precious. No potty training, no chewing, no hyperactivity. Calm, sweet and still got around just fine.

My husband and I are both teachers and are “Weekend Warriors” on our farm/homestead. We have a milk cow, 2 steers that will be ready to butcher next winter (just did one in December), pigs for breeding and butcher, chickens for laying, ducks and geese for bug control. We also get meat chicks in the spring to put in the freezer. We have an incubator and hatch chicks to sell a new for replacement of our own hens. Last year we sold over 300 chicks. We are gearing up to put in née raised beds in our garden and starting our seeds. You mentioned you don’t have the space, but here is an option... use your rv as a temporary greenhouse or seed starting place. Good luck and I enjoy watching.

Thank you for this video. So nice to see how you are doing. I love that you know how to strike the balance between being helpful to others and keeping personal boundaries in place. People have no right being all up in your business. Sleeping arrangements are a private family decision. In pioneer days the whole family slept in one room, and sometimes for warmth, even all in the same bed. Or had just a curtain between the beds. It’s only in maybe the last 50 years that kids had a room all to themselves, and bedrooms have become used for sleep and play. I love how completely open you are about what it takes to make such a huge change in your life. It’s not for the faint of heart. In 8 days I’ll be 70 and 4 years ago I retired from teaching, moved to a smaller place, married again, and moved to Scotland. No matter where you go, you bring “yourself” along- although a change of environment/occupation can be helpful, that alone won’t solve all of your problems. Oh, one idea: if the kids don’t want to be ON camera, maybe they would like to help with the filming and editing? It could even lead to a career (my son-in-law is a videographer and does well). Love to you all, and best wishes for a lovely, blessed new year.

Anybody else checking out the books? And finding lots of familiar and I own that! High five on the self awareness and good example setting to recognize the season you are in and that it doesn’t lend itself to bringing more work (animals) to the farm. How exciting to know you’re working on infrastructure that will allow you to safely bring in more animals ( if you decide that’s what you need to do) and that it will be there when you need it. I can’t count the number of times I brought something home and had to scramble to try and get set up for it after the fact. Re: the kids sleeping arrangements- a lot of folks are used to each child having their own room- I’m old enough that I shared a room with two sisters and my three brothers shared a room. It’s all context isn’t it? Enjoy anything you put out. Blessings.

Until you can get a fence up to protect your orchard from deer, use fishing line. Tie fishing line along the tree line (forest) at about chest high for a deer. They won't jump it. They won't jump what they can't see because they can't gage it. Works like a charm. I use it here and it's done a great job.

I can 100% relate to Ben's comment about how his knife work isn't as fun as being outside, I'm in the same spot. My main gig is software development and while it certainly pays great, it's hard to sit inside when I'd much rather be digging in the dirt all day. But, as you also said, it all takes time and I have to remind myself every day that what I'm doing is in support of the homestead I'm building. One day I'll finally have the total freedom to homestead all day, it just won't happen overnight. Keep up the good work y'all, you are an inspiration.

Hopefully it’s because he enjoys what he’s doing! He has really cleaned the land there! Each day I check to see if you have a new video and if you do, I watch it right away. I’ve even watched some more than once! (Loved them)! You are great parents! I agree that your home is great! You redid it MUCH better than it was when it was brand new! Inside it looks like an ordinary home and that’s what I now consider it! When you first looked at property with NO barn or other buildings, I think how great it is that you found the place you have! It has several out-buildings! I think you were smart to have redone the one you did, as it is spacious! Just continue to enlarge your garden! Your animals are really giving you food that’s great! Our 350 acre working farm has been shut down to the public since last March and that is ongoing... You both have so much valuable homesteading/farmsteading information at your disposal spanning from between 1935 and today. Take the "best" of it as it applies to your situation and climate. You can eat the young lufas..just peel and stirfry or in soups..so glad to hear your stance about protecting your family especially the kids in tender age..there is so much graziness out there we don't need to add to it especially if it would hurt them and their future. Parenting is a challenge..doing good, we've seen enough to know they are active in the new lifestyle and that is a good thing

So good to hear from you again! Thanks for sharing - I love that you are so grounded. Especially good to hear your comments about your children... allowing them their space to grow up "normally". Interesting to hear you speak of the things that are on your mind for this year. As always I pray that God watches over you all. Keep smiling.

I had a deer problem. I bought some zest soap. My husband cut it into 3 pieces for me. I put the soap in old nylon socks hung it from the trees 2 per tree. Never had s problem with deer again. It worked!!!

Hi Meg, I understand your frustrations with seed-starting space, maybe give 'winter sowing' in water jugs and 2litre bottles a shot. It's literally just a set it and forget it kind of thing. It was definitely a game changer for me.

How was the complexion of the pigs after their spa day in the mud?😁 The neighbor’s pigs by Grandmom’s house loved the mud! People have to remember too, when you’re in the middle of building a homestead, that all members pull together and so what sharing a bedroom. There were seven of us on a homestead in Alaska and we may not have had what a lot of others had materially, but what we did have massively made up for all the other stuff! Not one of us would change that experience! So 👍👍👍 tops to you 💕❤️💗❣️🥰

I like the book shelves by the way! Go easy. I think you are pacing yourselves well. I'm amazed at how much you have done already. It took us about 5 years to get our hobby farm set up. You guys have gotten so much done so quickly! It all takes time! You have done so much already. Maybe enjoy it first before you add more?

Yup ... baby girls. I totally get ya. While you have been missed, it is completely understandable that you spend the first 3 months finding the new groove. Criminy! Y'all had some special challenges this year ON TOP of what the rest of us experienced, too! Looking forward to a new routine when you get it figured out. It's really nice to hear what you hope your plans will be AND they totally make sense. Infrastructure before production is only logical. Love you guys so much and .... Miss Buggy is so incredibly adorable!!!!!

The quality of your rebuild was better than most of the new stick built houses I see being built around here. I suspect that it should last as long as any modern house and perform as well if not better. I would want a subcompact tractor to reduce some of the physical labor required. Glad to see that you are getting your plans laid out for the coming year. I wish you well in your future endeavors.

I had all boys and my last one is a girl. She would not let me put her down as well. For almost 2 years I could not do what I did before. Gardening was impossible with my daughter. When she was two she would pull out everything that I planted. Now that she is almost 5 I am able to get back to the things I used to do. Now she has to help me but we do those things together. My girl was and is a lot of work but it’s all worth it. I just love her so much. I love my boys as well (of course) each one is different and wonderful in each of their own way.

We put whirligig's out around our fruit trees and it has discouraged deer from eating on them. With Ben's skills he could make his own and it is less expensive than fencing and they are fun.

Well, come on Ben - we just got put on a Pescatarian diet & we need a good filet knife. Lol!!! Meg - not that you can make soap - but a snuggly worked really well with my daughter. Love the blankie behind Meg.

Meg and Ben, Happy New Year to you and your family. You've made the best decision on moving out of California to North Carolina for your family. We have a running list on a grease board at home of projects we want done, along with several wood sheds, and another out building. Granted we'd love to have them done all now. It may take us several years to get them done, and that's okay because it's our life. We have this visual list to motivate us, and when a project is done it's crossed off. It's what we call life on a homestead/farm.... the board of continous projects and plans😊 I agree with your beliefs on filming your kids, and would do the same thing if I were to have a YouTune channel. Keep on keeping on Hollar Family!!! Sending hugs your way.

We miss you but fully understand you have your hands full. We will be there when you are ready. Enjoy your family there is nothing more valuable. Privacy is really imported to kids. Some channels I watch we don’t see there children at all. It’s your decision always remember that. Happy New Year from UK.
