Hey guys, Living Traditions uses a large clear beverage container that has a spigot to collect their milk in. They let it separate then just open the spigot and let it out til you get to the cream. I think its a 4 or 5 gallon dispenser. I found some on Amazon. It may be much faster and just as much cream as the ladle method.

You know Meg, you are a girl after my own heart. I was like you. I had five children and I loved cooking and taking care of my family. And like you, I made everything from scratch. And just like you, I had good quality equipment, and just like you, it never looked pretty because I was so busy cooking and using it that I didn't have time to scrub my pots and pans to make them look good. Sometimes in the winter time I would spend a few days scrubbing pots, but that was rare. But what I gained is that all of my children can cook, and I mean they can cook any kind of cuisine from all around the world. They are all self sufficient. They have always been practical and know how to keep a house, wash their own close, clean the house, wash the dishes, and some simple repairs. I lost my oldest son at the age of sixteen who drowned. But living, I have two boys and two girls. My oldest living is 42 and my youngest is 37. At one time I had five kids under the age of ten, and until the last, I always had two in diapers. Diapers of which I washed. Didn't do the Pamper route when everyone else did. I loved my life. Turned 67 this year, and my mind is willing but my body is not able to physically do all of that anymore. But I have loving children to do for their mom. I am truly blessed.

I grew up where we just skimmed it off the top by hand. After refrigerating it was pretty easy to see the layers between the heavy cream, the light cream and the skim milk. Heavy cream was always removed. Sometimes the lighter cream was removed but some, or all, of the light cream was left with the milk and before pouring a glass we would shake it up so the light cream would temporarily mix back in with the milk. I alway loved that. Of course if we needed to make butter or ice cream more of that light cream would be removed. My preference would be to do it manually to save time and more importantly for me reduce the things I would have to clean up - I hate doing dishes. Good luck.

@TheHollarHomestead A suggestion for EASIER and LESS EXPENSIVE cream separation: Use drink dispensers with a spout. Let them sit in the fridge, then open the spout and the milk portion comes out into a pot. Stop when you get to the cream portion (i.e. close the spout) then you have your cream separated easily and can make butter, etc.

Yes, that's the method we used. Just glass lemonade style jars from Walmart. We did replece the plastic spigots with stainless steel spigots from Amazon. Cheap...easy...cream separates all by itself. Also some cows produce more cream....we owned one cow that was a 50/50 cow! Half her "milk" was cream.

@@marylouise890 The portion left in the dispenser is the cream. The milk that you take out is usable to make cheese and is still drinkable. After you make cheese, the whey that's left is still a useful product for many things, including feeding to pigs and chickens. Some people make kefir or kombucha from it, I think.

We had a larger separator, held 2 gallons, and the motor may have been larger. We had goats so waiting for it to separate was not an option. We would heat the milking from the night before while we were milking then run it after the milking. To save a step the milk was filtered into the separator as we did each goat. There was a hollow set screw that the cream came out of which could be adjusted to the thickness of cream we wanted. At the peak of our operation we were milking 20 goats. My favorite was to simmer the whey sown until the water was all gone and the sugar would carnalize then mix that back int the curds.

The Gridlessness channel ( I may have their name wrong. . .) got a used separator exactly like the one we had and it worked like a charm for them. Them old fashioned mo-sheens did the job! Yeah, I would return it and put a detailed review on Amazon and trust me you will get a refund. With the mini split in the kitchen/living area I recommend washing those filters out daily. Easy enough to do right in the sink. This will help the life of your motor. Those filters are catching all the kitchen grease that is airborne etc. I have a mini split in the same type of area in my place and I used to burn out motors constantly and found out it was due to the lack of airflow from the kitchen gunk buildup on the filters. Now I wash them daily and no longer replace the motors.

Boy! I remember when we had a cream separator. It has many small parts, is a chore to clean. We had seven cows and felt we NEEDED it. Lol. We probably got tired of washing it and it lowered our butterfat so much that we got a much lower price for our milk. Coupled with the fact it was so easy to skim off our needs , we stopped using it. Mom washed it for the last time and then it became a unique decoration in our milk house. Lol. But hey, since you don’t ship your milk, it’s very likely you will use it more than we did.

We have the same separator and it took us several runs to get it dialed in. Just like you, at first I thought.. oh boy I just wasted $300 😳 Just last week I did an experiment where I hand skimmed the milk prior to running it through the separator to see if it was worth the effort of washing all the peices. I was amazed at the amount of cream I got from the hand skimmed milk. I kept it seperate when making butter. The hand skimmed milk had a little higher yield per quart, but not significantly. The other thing I found to be time saving was to use one of my 5 gallon pots for heating the milk and the other set down in the sink to collect the skim milk. That was super helpful in not having to switch out bowls.

I remember back in the 50's living on my parents' farm we used to have an old "hand-cranked" cream separator. It worked great! Never any hassles with it... just a few parts to wash and clean after use. I wonder if "Leaman's General Store" sells any of those hand-powered separators today?

When I did the farmliving-thing, we had a hand-run thing (Alfa Laval) that was REALLY efficient. It was hard to get it running in the beginning, but as faster it got, the easier it was. And quick! Maybe 10 liters in half an hour?

How cute was Buggy giving her Daddy a kiss….cuteness overload😘😘!! Trial and error is the name of the homestead game! I have things I’ve bought thinking it would really speed up a certain process…just to discover it didn’t work as well as I anticipated!! The lesson is we were doing it the best way for our situation! I love how y’all are so real and honest and you give us a video that helps everyone🥰🥰🥰🥰!!

Really nice Vid guys! the Rhodes did the same thing in the beginning with their cream separater. the really good cream separaters are Thousands of $$. Not worth it! I put off replacing or installing something (double door thru wall doggie door) & it ends up being easier than i thot.

Check out the one the Rhodes have, I don’t recall them having to heat the milk and it’s refrigerated so they do a lot at one time.

What a bummer about the separator! 😡 🤬 😡! I use a ladle. You can also use one if those sun tea jars as long as it's ine that completely comes apart for goid cleaning. I still think the ladle is most efficient. Blessings sweet family, julie

I had wondered if a separator was really necessary. I think not for me. Thanks for another informative video. ❤️

Refrigerator beverage storage container with large fill cap and dispensing spigot. Let the cream rise, drain the "skim" out of the spigot. Taa Daa! You can get a three gallon container for under $20. Worth a try.

when yer in there (ac unit) clean the radiator. it continuously processes cooking air. i can see its coated in oils. could be massive electrical inefficiency.

you should try and find an old hand cranked cream separator., like from the 1940's I bought one years ago for $75 and if works great and doesn't take long to separate milk at all, You can also electrify them quite easily.
