When Bird Watching Goes Wrong

We finally found what was knocking on the service van, and got that fixed.
Then we headed out to Sand Hollow State Park to recover a Volkswagen beetle that had become bogged down in Sand.
The nice lady that was driving the Volkswagen bug had been out watching birds all morning and was ready to head out when she got trapped in the sand.
The final segment in this video is a high school, cross country mountain bike race that my son Kaulin participated in.

This lady did great with following instructions and rope control. No big jerks, great throttle and braking. And yea, beetles are light and they can get pretty far down dirt roads till they get in trouble. We need to lift that thing strip off some of the panels, and put in oversized tires. :)

Nice recovery with a lovely client. It seems you make friends everywhere and hard to call it work. However, you do make it look easy and I didn't realise how dangerous it could be until a recent video of a beach extraction where an out of alignment tow flipped the tow vehicle on its side. Jeeps straight six is such a wonderful power plant for a little truck, @5:30-5:50 listening to it rev’d up, 😌it’s so solid. My 94 5spd 4.0L H.0 XJ ran perfect for the 246,000 hard miles we racked up and it asked for almost nothing in return except simple maintenance.

What was shown was the ring gear used with automatic transmissions. Ring gears don't have enough inertia to serve as a 'flywheel'. It is the torque converter bolted to the ring gear that provides most of the inertia and is the primary component acting as a flywheel on automatics. Aftermarket ring gears are available, but for a failure like that, I question if the engine and transmission are out of alignment, resulting in flexural loading on the ring gear.

Rick Owens I had one do that on an old 71 ply fury. He's right about it makes a lot of noise. I baby'ed mine for over a week. Got one from a salvage yard, little work. I seen that part and thought, 'I been there, amazin that thing acctually still drove.

@@gregparrott They were called flexplates back in the old days. I'm not even sure about some of these new cars they build. Makes ya wonder if they made out of plastic....LOL.....

@@jamesmoore3346 Yep, I go back to older days as well, swapping out Powerglides for switch pitch TH400s, on to an M21 4 speed and eventually a Doug Nash 5 speed. But now, 8 and even 10 speeds come standard. For Chevy, the ring gear came in 2 sizes, 153 and 168 tooth (for big blocks and higher compression engines)

hey Matt I love it you do show your family side on some of your videos. I was a AAA driver my first recovery was a 1/2 ton chevy pickup 125 ft down the inbankment on it side. I was in a old 480 homes wrecker with only 75 ft of cable and 20 ft of chain. It take me and another drive 1.5 hrs to get it back up on the freeway. I can relate to the chevy video that you and the boys did that no one thought you could get out.

Sand is just a different animal when it comes to off-roading. I found that using very slow, even throttle (just barely enough to get it moving) works best.
