I always recommend a single six to people curious about getting into plinking. If you can sit all day a plink with something like a heritage rough rider then you will have an even better time with a semi auto. I like steering the towards a rough rider or ruger wrangler. They taught me that patience equals fun. Having only six slow shots made me concentrate on making each shot count.

I have a heritage arms 22LR with the Magnum cylinder and have well over 2,000 rounds of LR Mini mags and about 500 rounds of 22 magnum through it and it is as tight and still feels like a brand new gun. These are just a very good gun if you are on a budget or not.

i love the 22 caliber bullet. i hate how disrespected it is. even the word "plinking" is almost always used when talking about the 22. its used in a "i dont take this round seriously and only consider it for fun and games." i looked around to find any other caliber that people say is "good for plinking" and found none. not even for the 380. i hear people say really stupid shit about the 22 like "it will sting, but not kill" or "has no stopping power". that shit is so ridiculous. lots of people have been killed with 22lr. and not because you had a perfect shot or put 50 rounds in them. it only takes a couple. you take 1 to the chest, youre gonna die just as dead as with any other bullet. if you dont respect the 22 as a lethal round and any gun its fired from as a deadly weapon, then you just dont respect guns period.

I have never considered the .22 to be disrespected. Quite the opposite. Some of the most expensive and most precision guns I own are .22s. I do not consider them an effective defensive cartridge.

back in 9th grade or so, i went to a boarding school far from home. i used to spend weekends with friends sometimes, and we had access to guns. on one of our outings, we had a 30.06 and a 22 rifle. his mom dropped us off in the mountains with plans to walk down to his reservation. there was no big game in sight, so when we got hungry we blasted some robins. we plucked them, roasted them on some spits we made and it's true what they say about food tasting good when you are hungry. it tasted gamey, like venison. when you mentioned your dad giving you hunting instructions i was reminded of that. my dad was in vietnam, and also earned an expert badge. i did not know that was the highest honor when i was a kid, but learned later on. funny because he ended up being a radioman for an artillery unit.

Plinkster, as a teenager, I was very much like you, albeit some 60 years ago. I was a .22 rifle shooter, an old Remington Mdl 24, bought by my grandfather and at that time, my father's rifle, which I took over at 10 years of age. I wore it out, more or less, and saved my money and got a Win. Mdl 62 at 14, and then my Browning ATD a few years later. If it stood still, moved or flew, it was fair game or target. But I am a bit older now and have become more of a pistol shooter in my old(er) age. In watching your program today, I believe you only left out one pistol that if you don't have, you need to shoot to appreciate. And that would be one of FNH's Browning patent Medalist-Challenger-Nomads. These pistols were from the wizardry of designing pistols of John M. Browning, who is in a way, also responsible for the Colt Woodsman, which he designed and sold the patent to Colt. The Medalist is one of the finest, if not the finest pistol ever designed. I was fortunate enough several years ago to buy one to go with my medley of pistols similar to the ones mentioned in your show today. I am sure you have probably shot one, or may even own one or two. My Challenger II is probably my second most favorite pistol, and then my High Standard 103. And you really need to get a Bearcat to to go along with your Single Six. Your vids should be required watching by every young person.

The ruger single six 22lr is also good for another reason: you can get an additional cylinder chambered in 22 magnum and just swap it in (just takes a few seconds) and you'll have a 22 magnum revolver.

Yep, I've had 2, 1 blued and one stainless 5.5", still have the stainless. They both came with as convertibles. It's my favorite gun period. The variety of ammo you can shoot from these things just makes them so versatile.

-- Just getting into this, but I have learned other skills, and I believe that your advice about taking your time to do it right is the best way to learn. Speed will come later, almost automatically. Almost-- one can also get into some bad habits of slowness, but if one is motivated, it's easier to learn how to do something with precision first, and then focus on doing it a little faster. There's an equivalent of the spray-and-pray approach in the construction business, and the results are rarely pretty. I think impatience is a more universal motivator than precision, and that in most cases, getting the precision thing down first will flow easily into impatience, but the reverse is less reliable. In construction, I have seen very few guys who went from fast-and-sloppy to fast-and precise, but lots of guys who went from slow-and-precise to fast-and-precise.

Probably the most accurate 22 I have ever shot is the Smith & Wesson 41. They are not cheap, but I have not found anything I like better.

My dad had the same "one shot - one kill" rule. No wasting ammo. When we would go hunting he would give us 25 shells each. When we returned from the hunt he would give us one new shell for each kill. When we wasted enough shots that we didn't have any more ammo we would have to earn a new box by doing extra chores. Enjoy your videos. I recently picked up an SR22. I really like it. I've put about 500 rounds thru it with no FTE or FTF. So far it eats everything I feed it.

I have a Ruger Mark II, like it a lot, it is much more accurate than I am, and the one my friend has with a bull barrel is simply awesome. As I get older I go shooting much less and have a harder time remembering how to reassemble it after cleaning. The latter models have a much, much better take down and reassembly system, I would strongly recommend one of those instead.

+the7thson1962 I have the Sport King with the 6 3/4" barrel. A friend of mine gave it to me, as his son had left it in the woods, and it looked like it was a total loss. I disassembled it, and cleaned the rust off with steel wool and WD40. It was a little tricky putting it back together, but, there are diagrams of the inner workings on the net. It shoots beautifully. Outside of my Ruger service six, .357, it is my favorite pistol. Enjoy!

Good advice. As an NRA Basic Pistol Insstructor, my consistent advice to students is to pick up a .22 pistol and learn the proper mechanics of pistol shooting. I love picking up my Ruger Single Six or Browning 1911-22 and working on technique while having fun. At 8-10 cents per round, you don't have to feel as though you are depleting your bank account, and there is a wide range of .22 pistols to play with. Thanks for sharing your experience!

I was in the market for a Ruger Mark 4 pistol for a while. During that search for “the right one”, I ran across a Smith & Wesson model 22S. It was heavy and bulky, but when I realized it was made right here in Maine, I had to buy it. It was well used and still dirty from use. I am glad I bought it. It is a tack driver with a red dot sight. I also have a Ruger SR22 and love that one too. Light and feels great in my hand.

I have tried several revovers and pistols in .22lr, but wasnt that good with it, mainly because I have big hands, and then there was the buckmark and that one fitted nice in my big hands en the groups improved dramaticly, so while others shoot great with different brands it didnt work when I shot them because of different size hands.

i've shot a heritage before. it was stainless steel with mother of pearl grips and i believe a 6.5" barrel. not too bad in the accuracy department, nor was it too heavy. i could justify the $150-200 for one. i kind of want the blued 9" with cocobolo grips myself. wouldnt mind having the 4.75" 9 round cylinder either.

I got a M9-22 and gave it to my son, along with a FS92 9mm. About the same weight too. I kept a heritage ,22/,22 mag and a GSG 1911 to go along with my 45 acp 1911s. I was happy with my two .22 handguns and then I found a lightly used Stoeger Luger. Not very accurate, but fun to shoot. Took it out once and then went back to larger calibers. Never was a very good shooter, but as long as I can place my 9/40/45 cal rounds in a 8 " target at 50', I am happy

What did you do, kill it with a shotgun then back up 200 yards, crank up the magnification on your 4-12x scope, and then spend all afternoon shooting mag after mag until you gave up, walked up to the squirrel, checked to make sure no-one was watching, and then shot it in the head point blank

One of my favorite .22 pistols is a Mountain Eagle made by Desert Eagle. The problem with it is the magazines were made of plastic and the feed lips wore out. I haven't been able to find any replacement mags for it so it sits on a shelf. It shot amazingly well.

Thank god, a man who specializes in 22, now as a lad growing up in New Zealand at the time it was a cash strapped country due to poor political direction, I grew up in country, we had wonderful dark soil but meat was hard to come by, it was nothing for my dad to wake me at 5 am I had a 22 rifle & he had a 4-10 shotgun & this is how we put meat on the table. my dad was a policeman so god help you if you handled the weapon wrong & he told me that one shot does the trick if you shoot right, don't waste ammo & make sure you clean kill that animal each time no suffering ( he was a dog handler ) so I hope you can shear my points on 22 , yes it will kill almost anything if used correctly, but here is my question, in terms of high impact kill there seem to be a move away form 22 hornets or magnums, why is this so or is it just me.. it has been a lot of years since I went hunting but there is not much mention of the type of ammo anymore, ?????

Excellent video - thank you very much for making it. I've got 3 22 rifles, but no pistols yet. Unfortunately, I'm here in a very anti-2A State, and Ruger, S&W (and many others) have fallen off of the "roster." I just passed on old Woodsman that I had been considering - it has been for sale for several months for $500 on a firearms website that I frequent. Decided to go with a more modern semi-auto instead, and will probably go w/a Buckmark Plus, followed by a Sig Mosquito the following month. Maybe I should reconsider the Woodsman, which is still for sale.

My very first pistol 31 years ago was a Jennings J-22, chrome W/ pear handle, so I don't have the heart to part with it even though its a jamming machine! But the answer is Ruger SR-22, very reliable, accurate & fun to shoot & cheap to shoot...eats all the bulk ammo you can put through it. I don't even bother cleaning it till I have about 500 rounds through it!

My favorite .22LR pistols....FWB AW93, Pardini HP, Hammerli SP20, Hammerli 208/210, Hammerli 162, TOZ-35, and a High Standard Victor 10X Bob Shea. Out of those, it's a tossup between the AW93 and the SP20, and the 208 vs. the TOZ-35. I just can't appreciate a Ruger anything pistol past a cheap way to make a repeatable bang sound when the trigger is pulled, or a very quiet sound in the case of a suppressed Ruger. Yes, I've owned them, and I've sold them all. They were traded in one the pistols listed above. I've shot the Browning Buckmark and the Colt Woodsman, along with numerous other entry level .22LR pistols when, you guessed it, I was getting into target shooting. Even the cheap High Standards are the same. They are what they are, but they are NOT target pistols. They're plinking guns. I'll reconsider that position when I see them punching paper at ISSF competitions, as I'm always looking for an edge regardless...but I'm confident that'll never happen.

Most average guns are in the $300 to $600 range. So lets just be conservative and say he has $25k to $40k in guns in his 30's. Now, that is what a new car costs, so it is not impossible, I am just wondering how he and so many others are spending this much on their hobby. I'm not hating, just curious what they are neglecting to afford them.

Lets assume you started making money at 20 ish when you got out of college. So $40K divided by 15 years means that you are spending over $2,600 a year on average. This does not even address ammunition costs, range fees, accessories, storage, cleaning supplies, etc. Unless you are making over $100k a year, that is a significant chunk of your annual budget. I'm making close to $70k a year and I cant justify spending that much on my hobby (as much as I would LOVE to). Do you guys just let your kids go without braces and sports gear? hahaha just kidding on the last part.

I'll agree with the Browning and the target Ruger. In my opinion, the single six is best suited to a beginner, it is the least likely of the bunch to have an unintentional discharge, because it has to be manually cocked before each shot and it's impossible to waste a lot of ammo with as long as it takes to reload. I use my S&W Model 18 to teach younger or first time shooters. Same idea as a single six, but I believe starting with a double action teaches better trigger control.

We are Ruger Mark 2 and 3 fans although when I bought my son and I new Mk lll's the takedown nearly drove me mad but I found aftermarket replacement parts to convert these to take down the same as my Mk ll's. Ah, thank you TandemKross for making my Mk lll civil! I do like your Browning .22's but to clean them you have to remove the top strap? Love your SS scoped Ruger. With the scope you can clearly see how accurate these .22's are but for regular shooting I leave the scope power down to x1.5 or x2 power.
