So former law enforcement here, when it comes to incidents or “scene preservation” the responding officer or incident command, regardless of rank, takes charge and has more authority than even the police chief. It is purely because you have too many potential issues of scene tampering, witness tampering, or even evidence tampering. Not to mention a higher up could muck up your situation worse because they do not have the full picture. So in this situation the Sergeant was in the right according to most operational policies I’ve dealt with.

As former law enforcement, how many of your fellow LEOs showed up intoxicated on one substance or another? How many of your fellow LEOs broke the law regularly and got away with it simply because they were LEOs? How many times did you show up intoxicated or break the law and not serve time for it?

2:40 Biggest difference is in the military you're military 24/7. In this instance that Chief was off-duty and drunk, therefore a drunk civilian interferring and putting hands on a police officer. Any other civilian would've had it far worse than he did.
@iwannabethedutchman9 сағат бұрын
There isn't much difference in the military with a situation like this. Positional or operational authority can and does at times put lower ranked people in charge of brass or higher enlisted. Problem is often times the lower ranked person in charge is too afraid of reprisal to assert their rightful place on the pecking order in a situation like this.

It all depends on who's in charge and what the press wants to spin. Police politics flips between an "us vs Them" scenario to a "YOU vs us" real fast. Police try their hardest to preserve their priveleges for good reason. Unfortunately they have to umbrella these awful men if they don't want to risk losing the stuff good cops fight for. Police really need a reform with their practices on accountability and consequences. Too many officers are scared to do their jobs and their benefites are at risk from cops like this feeding into the ACAB narrative.

Also its not the same, only similar in labels. I was a police cadet as a teen, then went on to work on Marine bases as a civ for 4 years( i was there 6 days a week). The ranking system within the police department is a lot looser. The chief of police is one city means nothing in another, whereas an Admiral or General in the military is seen as a very high-ranking position just about anywhere you go, even in another country.. No Reveille ceremonies, no salute, and the high-ranking police officers generally talk to the low ranks more informally, less "orders" are given. like a friend or boss more than someone in a high-ranking position. You generally didn't say "sir, drill sergeant or mam" either as a sworn in cop as much ( us cadets had to though all the time, we were lowest rank more on the level of volunteers) it was usually more informal, like sarge, cap(for captain) or chief. Then again, it all comes full circle. Two times in those 4 years i had to assist a 3-star Marine Corps general. He was very old, but man was he the nicest, most calm person I have ever met. Very calm, talked to me like i was his neighbor or something lol Me having gone to 3 cadet academies and spend 5 years in the police cadets, I knew military time and how to talk to high-ranking individuals correctly, and also i was a civ on that base, so I'm sure that had a lot to with it too since you are supposed to treat the civs with respect to a degree if you are in the military. ( the police where im from use military time, we still had to say sir or mam, we learned to march and stand at attention, we learned ranking and etiquette with superiors, how to shoot weapons, etc. We had a lot of training, i mean a lot. Some programs are better than others. Ours was good. So YMMV with that lol)

The worst part about this is that his behavior had been going on for years and the other officers said nothing. Even in this situation from the video, the chief was clearly drunk or intoxicated….and the officers GAVE HIM HIS KEYS BACK!! They were about to knowingly allow a drunk person to get back into their car and then drive off. The only reason why this incident is different is that the chief tried to punish the sergeant, who flipped the script and decided to air out the chief. All of these cops are cowards and should be removed because the public cannot trust them.
