Because someone like this isn't obsessed with true crime the same way normal people are. They obsess about the wrong aspects of the crime for the wrong reasons. They're obsessed with the potential experience. They're obsessed with the perpetrators not the victims, with the act not the consequences, with what it would feel like and what emotions they might go through, with how they'll process their thoughts before, during, and after. They put themselves in the aggressor's shoes, not the victim's or family's or detective's.... "Normal" people obsessed with true crime are obsessed because we can't comprehend how people are capable of such things. We obsess because we want to learn things like recognizable patterns of behavior or societal impacts on the internal psyche. We want to try to understand how and why such evil and pain can exist. We want to grieve for victims with their loved ones... I think when you obsess with true crime for "normal" reasons, it's easier to pay attention to the logical and objective details of cases

most of these kind of people are secluded and isolated people. something like their whole world is like the four corners of their house. this kind of thing should not be possible in todays ERA in which can find so many things to read and watch on the internet. maybe she is the kind of person who even if she has all the freedom to do anything, they just don't know what they want or what to pursue until someone guide them. you know... the kind of people who are destined to be a worker for the rest of their life. Yet, so far judges and LEOs here have long been known for not carrying out already-sentenced death penalty on criminals (yes judges do sentence capital punishment but haven't officially executed any for more than a decade due to severe protests regarding protecting criminals' human rights and blah blah), so I think she too will be caged up in women's jail and spend the rest of her life in prison.

I’m glad you said that being interested in this genre doesn’t make us weird. These channels have definitely made me more aware of my surroundings and people I have limited contact with. @@Cuyt24first of all, ptsd is a trauma response that can happen to anyone for ANY reason. everyone’s brains work differently and some people are more or less likely to develop ptsd, depending on their genetics, upbringing and other factors. there are people who went through wars and horrific abuse and still have never developed ptsd, while there are many people who experienced things that most people wouldn’t consider particularly traumatizing and yet they have ptsd from those events. the “severity” of the trauma doesn’t make anyone’s ptsd more or less valid. it’s best to not assume and to have empathy for everyone. second of all, the trauma of that taxi driver seems quite severe. it’s not just about the blood on his hands. it’s about witnessing someone’s murder. it’s about the intense feeling of being unsafe that obviously lead to him quiting his job. i doubt that anyone would quit their job like this if it wasn’t for an obvious reason like a trauma. again, it’s best to not judge.

I became my mom’s full-time caregiver six years ago. When she was first hospitalized, I happened to stumble upon Forensic Files on satellite radio. I would listen to it on the drive to and from the hospital. It was interesting on an academic level and took my mind off of the tough situation I was in. It also helped me to remember that I am fortunate because I am safe and loved. As we learn on these shows, not everyone can say that. As much as I like true crime shows now, I would never hurt anyone. I spend my life doing just the opposite: helping someone who is ill. I don’t think watching true crime can change a persons moral compass. This girl had a broken one. I don’t know if there’s even a way to fix that.

That's not the case at all. Ted Bundy was the opposite! He was very sociable, rather popular in school and afterwards, did well in sports and had an active social life, including dating women. What was the "turn"? I think it was when his girlfriend (maybe fiancee?) broke up with him. That rejection seemed to set the wheels in motion. Crime writer Ann Rule actually met Bundy, knew him personally, before shr became a crime writer (she was in the police back then) and well before Bundy's crimes came to light. Rule found Bundy to be pleasant, likable, considerate - he might have even saved a few lives, as he and Rule were volunteers at a suicide hotline center. Bundy could appear charming, thoughtful and caring, likable and easy to talk to etc.

He has said himself that he possessed a mask, a veneer that he could adopt at will to blend in and get people to like him. I’m no psychologist but I know people are capable of going “chameleon” with their personalities and can truly transform then into the opposite of their true selves. This, according to himself, is what Bundy was capable of. I also have experience with this because, I chameleon myself too. However, I have no ulterior motive in doing so. I feel so bad for grandfather who blames himself for this individuals psychopathy. It is well agreed upon in psychiatry that the basis of personality occurs before age seven. Even the first two years of lack of hugging and affection as an infant and toddler can be to blame for sociopathic tendencies (lack of empathy). To boot, she had a learning disability and was probably bullied. As we know, these circumstances lead to such awful outcomes.

That is such a wild case. I like how the law protects the identities of victims and also could potentially provide ability for offenders to be rehabilitated and have a life after jail time. But also that they will disclose identities of those who they feel could be a danger to public. I was thinking as the video progressed how if Jeong hadn't been caught this could have continued into a serial.

@@mimik222 "Mental health" is not some sinecure. The US has a lot of mental health services and the recidivism rate is high - much higher than South Korea's. Back up your claims with facts instead of making assumptions and bashing another country.

I live, own and manage a restaurant here in Seoul but my parents and younger sister moved to Busan a few years ago, i can tell you that this made me so scared because my younger sister is in university but she tutors high school students for a little spending money. This made my over protective elder sister (mama bear) instincts grow exponentially. I told her I will give her the amount of spending money she would make to tutor if she stops all tutoring that is not on campus.

I think true crime is important, and I think you do it just right. You provide an empathetic view of the criminal and a sympathetic view of the victim. It's important to understand people who commit terrible acts, to learn from it, and hopefully be able to avoid creating more of them.

There is nothing wrong with being "very lonely". It doesn't lead someone to murder others. Our society has emphasis on having at least moderate amounts of friends in order to be accepted into society. Some people just don't like company of other people. I mean, being a loner wasn't a motivation to kill someone, right?

My sincere condolences to the victims family. How terribly sad. To know that your loved one was brutally murdered and then the aftermath is unthinkable. To the grandpa, it's not his fault but his life will never be the same. Taxi driver quit job probably due to the trauma. I can't imagine being in his shoes.

Ugh. I can relate to being "the quiet kid" in class and being the odd one out. I used to pretend I was emotionless because I thought I'd be seen as weak otherwise, AND I was big on true crime. Plus there was a lot of hatred festering inside of me at that time. Still, I could never do what she did.

Hope she never gets let out. I consider myself a loner, i just prefer my own company. I have very little friends except for my close family who are everything to me and I enjoy watching true crime (of course) but to plan a crime and commit it you have to be very evil. I think it makes it worse if media label her as a weirdo loner. There are a lot of loners and most are happy well adjusted people. I feel terrible for the victim and her family.

There's a big difference between an introvert who enjoys their own company and doesn't like to attend parties, and a quiet girl who doesn't respond appropriately to human communication (many are given the label of autism). You underestimate people's ability to differentiate between the two types of people. Introverts are quite common in our society. But people like Jeong are seen as "creepy" and people tend to stay away from them, as they do not give good vibes. You know the type. The ones who do not seem to show emotion, and have been always like that from young or from birth. Even though they must be lonely, they make no effort to socialize or make friends. Stop behaving as if introverts are being victimized by society or by the public when these crimes happen and the media reports on the perpetrators. There are many types of serial killers/psychopaths - extroverts and introverts. Your claims of being victimized by the media because you're an introvert is as ridiculous as an extravert claiming the same when the story of an extravert psychopathic serial killer comes out. I myself am an introvert, although for some reason, people have told me I am an extravert after they meet me, and am surprised to see I call myself an introvert. I guess I prefer my own company most of the time and have been very shy as a child, but when out at parties, I try and make an effort to socialize (although I get bored quickly doing so).

Parents owe a huge responsibility to the children they bring into the world. They need to much better with the child’s upbringing because it’s obvious it stems deeply from her childhood. We all need to do better as a society to reduce the rate of criminals being formed. The church needs to do better as well, preaching about the love of Jesus that has the changing power to bring love into the world and reduce crime overall. This is just both unfortunate and sad. My heart goes out to the victim and family.

I worked in South Korea in '97 and traveled throughout the country and to different large and small cities. I lived and worked in Taegu, near to Busan but never visited there. You captured the sense of safety within the country, along with its combination of commerce and beautiful nature well. Another great bit of storytelling and analysis!

I'm the same age and born the same year as her.. makes you really wonder that there's people out there who is crazy enough to take a life.. Poor grandfather tho, I have sympathy for him.. I was raised by my grandparents and of course not all the time they could be present especially on an age where you're suppose to start standing on your own feet. I've had compassion burnout which led me to depression and isolation. Only difference is, I had good support and that one loving friend to keep me out from those sad times. I'm still a true crime fanatic but I don't have such obsessive thoughts, to think about such things is truly horrendous. Crazy world we live in these days :(

UPDATE: In November 2023, a South Korean court gave a life sentence to Jeong Yoo-Jeong who told police she murdered a stranger "out of curiosity".

This case was shocking to the people here in South Korea.. the level of evil that is this young woman is alarming! But kudos to the taxi driver for reporting this woman.. the culture in this country sucks when it comes to stepping out and helping someone because of the Samaritan Law but this man did the public a service by stepping up and going against the culture norms 😊

True crime content did not create serial killers. I believe that these videos help us to be more aware. My parents are paranoid, and I believe that their paranoia has kept them and me safe. Psychopaths may be watching true crime, but there are far more regular people watching and learning from them. Stay safe out there!

Same! I feel like those true crime shows prevent us from becoming too gullible and trusting of many we don’t know too well. I watch them mostly because I worked in law-enforcement, but I also want justice for the victims who are featured in those shows. R.I.P Gian, my heart goes out to your family. I think she needs to be kept away from people, i really feel for her grandfather. I'm 61, true crime is not a new thing. Cop shows etc have always been popular. My mum brought a magazine back in the day, i think it was called "True detective" she hid it in hid room, my sisters and I would sneak in and read them just the same, they were more graphic and real than anything today. I do like you channel, i started watching you when you covered a neighbours case from Perth Australia and have been hooked ever since. Cheers

Hi Adrian thanks again and wow this one was sad...to murder a stranger because she wanted to know what it's like to kill...speechless...I feel so sad for her grandparent's who raised her and felt like they needed to apologise...her parent's however should have been in charge (though sometimes not having your parent's in your life can be a bonus)...I sure hope she gets life for what she did...she was almost skipping along the sidewalk with that suitcase (that made me feel sick she has no remorse)...and that taxi driver was very brave I'm glad he phoned the police straight away...sleep time but I needed to watch this before shutting my phone off 💜🇦🇺
