Let me tell you. See, whenever one learns a foreign language his/her pronunciation is more precise than the natives... Samskrit is a highly advance language with various rules of pronunciation. One of those is, whether to pronounce a consonant independent of a vowel( eg क्) or to pronounce it with a vowel sound ( eg क/का/को, etc) When the consonant is independent of a vowel the 'halant' ( ्) is placed below it . At this time a/aa isn't pronounced . But when there is no halant the sound of अ Or the respective vowel IS pronounced. For eg राम is pronounced as Rāma not Rām. But , धिक् is pronounced as dhik not dhika. Hope you got your answer...
