It is all a learning experience. I've had issues with my thirty year old Century welder which has always worked well. I have a new Titanium welder from Harbor Freight that I'm still getting used to. This is my second old Mustang that I'm building into a street rod. At 71, I'm still learning.

My opinion is you stop learning when you're dead. And then you go and learn some more.

Don't feel bad... I usually chuck the part out the door of the shop when it goes bad... I will say that the newer welders with the synergic function are allot easier on thin steel. And to add to that modern inverter welders without it are actually harder to use on body panels than transformer welders. All has to do with the way they start the arc. Even more fun is rebuilding the inside panel of that corner.

Good to show the bad with the good so we can all learn.

Like I have said for years anytime that you are working and actually doing stuff then things are going to happen, they just are. Brush it off and press on...

That's what we did. In the next video coming up I mentioned that the difference between a Craftsman and everybody else is that a Craftsman knows how to cover up his mistakes LOL

I just drive a couple of hours to pick up a hood for my 68 Impala that’s in worse shape than the one I have. BUT. It was $5, and it’s got the same metal, and lots of it. Also, i have lots of template pieces I can borrow. Probably worth the time/effort.

That's kind of how I view stuff like that

That was a pretty good tip, regarding using a donor car with a bend in the metal to match your car. Thanks again for another professional video.

Thicker metal is better. You can start your arc on it without blow through then move slightly onto your car metal without putting too much heat into it and warping your door too much.

I was kind of worried about the mismatch and depth of metal with the Galaxie panel

@@AutoRestoMod Metal is flush on the outside, but if 2 similar metals are the same, too much heat on either panel will cause bad warping at least if not continual blow through. Plus the main panel should always be protected. Thicker panel can take more heat and the weld pool can be moved onto the thinner panel with good penetration and less likely to blow through. On the surface they will still be level.
