Great take. Nobody had a good day here. Instructor demonstrated poor situational awareness and communication. Controller overreacted to a minor mistake while the pilot was actively apologizing. A point I would add is that the VASAviation animations aren't perfectly synced with the audio. We don't know for sure where the aircraft was when the exit instruction was given, how fast it was going, or whether he was still riding a wheelie as he passed C4. These details matter, since if C4 couldn't be taken safely, the pilot was under no obligation to do it. Of course he should have said "unable", but again - not anybody's best day. All the bickering about 4-3-20 is totally academic. If the FAA ever touches this, it will be resolved with 5 minute phone call reminding the instructor of all the stuff you said, which the instructor clearly already knows. I'm no expert on how ATC handles personnel issues, but I'd imagine the supervisor is going to encourage tower to worry a little more about ATC-ing, and not disciplining people on frequency.

A transmission not acknowledged, is a transmission not received. The reason you don't stop or reverse course to go back to a taxiway you just missed is because there can be multiple airplanes on the runway at the same time provided they all keep moving in the same direction and you have the separation requirements, 3000' between single engine aircraft, 4500 between Twins etc

given that they were landing and seemingly practicing something how likely is it that they didnt ignore the controller but were busy flying the plane? you know, aviate navigate then communicate.

Oh I have no doubt that this is probably the case. A good lesson though to keep those ears open and always listen for your call sign from ATC

I am a Professional pilot with 44 years experience. I have heard my fair share of rants over the radio. I found this controller took the issue a little too far. It was almost like he was trying to provoke the pilot to say something off colored back and then creating a bigger issue.

Nobody mentions the student is going to have a check ride in an hour after getting a phone number and possible deviation. How did that check ride go? I would like to hear the controller tell the DPE on how to give a check ride.

Pilot has ultimate authority. Full stop. Didn't answer ATC? Fly the plane first. Aviate, navigate, commuincate. ATC is paid to serve the pilots, and manage the world to best serve the pilots. Unable is a very strong word that usually won't be challeneged.

AIM 4-3-20 The following procedures MUST be followed after landing and reaching taxi speed. a) Exit the runway WITHOUT DELAY at the FIRST AVAILABLE taxiway or on a taxiway as INSTRUCTED by Atc.

Ignoring the controller, not good. The worst thing I saw was, they were crossing an active runway believe, to C5. Bad idea…..

Then he would have gotten a land and hold short instruction. If not he's free to cross the intersecting runway

Crossing the runway has no bearing on this situation since there was no LAHSO clearance.

and if anyone wants to claim "the AIM isn't regulatory" enjoy trying to use that as an actual legal defense. FAA v. Richards (1992) FAA v. McCune (1996) The Administrative Law Judge (ALJ) in used the AIM to uphold a pilot’s violation of a “taxi to” ground clearance The 2014 enforcement action FAA v. Leyner, also relied heavily on the AIM If there is a takeaway it is this: Yes, the AIM is “non‑regulatory.” But it is a mistake to dismiss the recommendations and standard practices contained in the AIM, an AC, a Flight Standards InFO or other guidance. FAA guidance tells us what the FAA expects, often sets a standard of conduct that we may be held to if we are charged with a violation, and in some cases, can even be used defensively. Mark Kolber is an active CFI and an aviation lawyer.

lastly, if one think's the controllers reaction is "over the top" it really isn't. imagine making someone's job unnecessarily harder to do. (which, in this case, includes ignoring a valid ATC instruction). would you put one item at a time on the conveyor belt to have the cashier complete a transaction for each item? It's not REQUIRED (read regulatory) to put all your items you intend to buy on the belt at the same time. But do you think the cashier's annoyed retort to you is uncalled for? No. you wouldn't.

What a bizarre comparison. Soft field landing is commonly practiced and a required maneuver on the ACS. The controller most definitely overreacted.
@FlywithClayton
@FlywithClayton 11 ай бұрын
There is nothing saying you can't do soft field landings, but as I mentioned in the video it is courteous and honestly just good risk management to communicate effectively with ATC what your intentions are.@@bhc1892

The Controller never confirmed that the pilot copied his exit instructions. Like the man said above, a message not acknowledged, is a message not received.

This popped in my feed but a CPC and Military controller prior to that. The only Deviation would be not following a LAHSO instruction. Which is very defined. I actually cant find anything in the 7110 just quick checking that covers this. Only that appropriate exits shall be clear as to allow the aircraft to fully pass the hold short lines. Once you are cleared to land the runway is yours minus the length of the LAHSO. This woulda been a non issue for me. Just send any traffic around. I get paid the same. Should qualify i havent done Local in 8 years.

Unless a LAHSO is accepted, the whole runway belongs to the landing airplane. If I come in too fast and I need the whole runway to bleed off speed, I'm using the whole runway. The cfi/ pilot landing could have said they'll need more runway than usual. But, in any case if the aircraft on final can't land they need to go around. Rushing a landing is very dangerous
@FlywithClayton
@FlywithClayton 11 ай бұрын
The point of this video is to communicate that. The pilot never communicated that and just sailed past the taxiway turnoff he was instructed to take. That’s where the problem came from in this situation.
@soccerguy2433
@soccerguy2433 11 ай бұрын
the whole runway does not belong to the landing airplane. They are expected to vacate at the 1st suitable taxiway. Furthermore, ATC instructed the aircraft to exit a specific taxiway. This is a valid instruction.
