@@CombatSelfDefense I highly recommend it to anyone who are new to martial art or want to change styles. I transferred from Taekwondo to MMA to join in combat sport industry ( which I was not known much about it, I was 19 back there ) around 8 years ago. I was not successful and was humiliated because of my Taekwondo background as useless skillset for MMA. I was broken and saw myself as a complete loser. A couple year later, I experienced a situation I had to defend myself with multiple attackers and luckily I survived. I realized something similar to that diagram. Gym, ring, street and real battlefield are different realms and I wish that I knew it sooner so I didn't waste my time to live so pessimistic like that back there. Nowadays, I train for fun and self-defense ( with a modified MMA fighting style after aforementioned experience ). Probably if I meet anyone who is interest in martial art like I did, I will present to them this diagram and your channel to guide them to their suitable path. Thank you

I've often had puzzled expressions when people ask if I teach self defense, and I tell them that I teach fighting, not self defense, because self defense is a legal term used in court, and that I've never been to law school. And they REALLY get confused when I tell them that if they want to learn true self defense to go to their local police station, and ask the police there how do people get in situations that require a physical confrontation in the first place.

Honestly ive always felt that how restrictive laws are when it comes to self defence play a large part in this as well. Becuase even if you dont flatline them you still run the risk of going to jail just because they wanted to counter sue you and in some cases actually win. So the law is indirectly saying your only allowed to either run for your life or just stand there and let them have their way with you, because trying to do anytbing else puts you at risk of getting locked up. And at that point learning any sort of self defence becomes pointless.

@@CombatSelfDefense I do not agree with Solaris....if you can throw a hard jab and a good cross, that will take care of most self-defense problems. As advocated by Jack Dempsey in his 1950 book. He stated truthfully that practicing just those two punches on a heavy bag is all you need to handle most thugs. Of course it takes months of hitting the bag to develop those punches. Most people, and I would bet most "martial artists", can't punch their way out of a paper bag. And you might as well learn the hook and uppercut also.

Isn't the same principles used in firearms training, but people do it under pressure. Weapons fighting is a lot different than Empty-hand. Even high skill UFC fighters have been injured or killed by nonskilled combatants with weapons. MMA is just superior unarmed combat, absolutely. But weapons can bridge that gap quickly😮

Force multipliers are real. A stick that can take hitting bone full speed without breaking is a murder weapon. That's why the most important skill you can train for self-defense is situational awareness. If you are arguing with a guy who, in his head, "just wants to rough you up to let off some steam" and you pull a knife or baton, you've abandoned all hope of de-escalation. This is now a real fight, possibly to the death, and you're hoping he backs down. If you're arguing with a guy who wants to actually hurt you and you think you're just having a heated argument, you won't know you're fucked until it's too late.

Most sensible video I've seen in ages! Most self-defense schools and dojos don’t even address the legal implications of physical engagements. Luckily most practitioners will never engage in physical confrontation on the streets as the probability of that happening are very slim. If that was not the case, prisons and cemeteries would be full of “self-defense” practitioners.

@sasoriko

Self defense is not a fight. The assumption is you will be outmanned, outgunned, and not have the initiative. The likelihood that you will have the chance to do anything at all is slim to none and the aggressor has already initiated violence. This is when all your avoidance and de-escalation has failed. At that point this guy is telling you to not use your tools to survive (knife, gun, lethal techniques). If the Rittenhouse trial has shown us anything it's that self-defense is alive and well in this country.
@hopelesslydull7588
@hopelesslydull7588 10 ай бұрын
He is saying a lot of things in this video, and none of them was that. Proper self defense that comes after avoidance and de-escalation is not murder. If you break 3 bones and knock the guy out while you have minimal bruises, it won't matter who threw the first punch or how outmanned you were, you're going to jail. Also, lethal fighting techniques can't be pressure tested in training properly because they're supposedly *lethal*. You either are practicing slowly against a willing participant safely or against a static dummy. You shouldn't rely in a fight on any technique you can't practice properly. Most importantly, most people who spout self-defense use it in a setting for one on one fights they didn't physically initiate. Rob is saying that yelling self-defense isn't going to get you out of your manslaughter charge.
@sasoriko

@@hopelesslydull7588 "He is saying a lot of things in this video, and none of them was that." Might want to re-watch the video 6:52 "If you break 3 bones and knock the guy out while you have minimal bruises, it won't matter who threw the first punch or how outmanned you were, you're going to jail." In our crooked injustice system a DA can charge you with attempted murder if you're the one with 3 broken bones in the hospital and the other guy has minimal bruises. "Also, lethal fighting techniques can't be pressure tested in training properly because they're supposedly *lethal*." Pressure testing looks a lot different in self-defense scenarios. We don't train "techniques" that kind of thinking will get you killed. Also you're wrong if you want to full on pressure test you can certainly do that and it's encouraged it just requires a lot more communication and consent and rest time and psychological rest and reassurance. It also is helpful to have professionals on hand especially when doing mix gender classes and when weapons are involved. It's really a mission, but it's the best way to train. He is correct on the LARP aspect because in training we're only pantomiming gross bodily injury often substituting objects for body parts to apply full force, and moving very gently with your partner when you have them in compromised positions. Some positions are so dangerous we initiate them and immediately let go. Having been on both ends of real world violence both at home and abroad I'll say that this video is 10 minutes and 24 seconds that I hope helps someone somewhere, anyone who listens to this guy I pray that the extent of their experience is on their mats and in their mma cages and whatnot.
@hopelesslydull7588
@hopelesslydull7588 10 ай бұрын
@@sasoriko You have to hear yourself when you say "moving very gently with your partner" and "initiate them immediately and let go". If I only ever trained uppercuts where I was moving very gently and only ever tapped without follow through, no one would think I was ready to use an uppercut in a real life scenario. A decent fighter with good spacing and footwork and amateur level jabs and crosses could walk over most aggressors in the world. Having something like a tactical pen or flashlight is a force multiplier that could still fuck someone up with much lower risk of killing their aggressor. Especially with something like a gun for personal self defense when you're not at home, you are planning to be able to retaliate in self defense further from 7 feet away from your aggressor. Any closer, a knife would be better. That scenario will be less than 1% of the times that de-escalation has failed, where being randomly assaulted without prior warning is already a very small chance for the vast majority of people. If you're outnumbered and getting jumped and you don't know if they are planning to kill you, you were fucked before you pulled your knife or gun. Something put you in the sights of these guys, so having the gun would be a tactical preparation, not everyday carry. For most whom the threat of being outnumbered by people who will do more than just kick your ass or whom live around people who will stab you for no reason, absolutely carry guns and knives, but those are the *overwhelming* minority of people in the world. Everyone else probably shouldn't, mostly for the reasons Rob said in the video.

@@hopelesslydull7588 Bwahahaha. If you're out here using uppercuts to save your life you must be both the size of and training like Tyson Fury. There are also major drawbacks to that choice of technique, but to each his or her own. "A decent fighter with good spacing and footwork and amateur level jabs and crosses could walk over most aggressors in the world." This just shows your ignorance. From the perspective of someone who has, for years, trained and trained with people who 'have' to use violence in life you are living a fantasy. Show me the effective use of a jab in real combat. Show me a person being mugged jabbing his way out of it. Show me a woman being assaulted jabbing her way out of it. There are billions of videos on KZbin. I can guarantee not even the likes of Valentina Shevchenko is going to "jab and cross" her way out of a violent assault especially as the assailant is most likely one or more larger men. "Especially with something like a gun for personal self defense when you're not at home, you are planning to be able to retaliate in self defense further from 7 feet away from your aggressor. Any closer, a knife would be better. That scenario will be less than 1% of the times that de-escalation has failed, where being randomly assaulted without prior warning is already a very small chance for the vast majority of people." Let's get real. When someone has targeted you and has already decided to use violence, most people are so many decisions behind the initiative they're not going to be able to react. They're going to have to wait their turn. And on their turn you want them to use a flashlight??? Bwahahaha. There are many data driven reasons why people should not carry weapons for self defense. This is just a bad argument from a person's feelings. The facts are different. My argument is that most people are going to have a greater need to train for non-consensual violence than consensual violence. "For most whom the threat of being outnumbered by people who will do more than just kick your ass." You live in this fantasy world where violence isn't lethal. Where you have both a high view of your uppercuts and crosses, but a low view of how much damage an ass kicking leaves in its wake. I have countless stories of people who are maimed for life from what you consider to be effective techniques delivered in one of your aforementioned "ass kickings." Working in the medical field I can pull records to prove the data points that this isn't unique. This guy in this video is both young and fit. When I was young and fit I echoed similar sentiments. A lifetime of combat and violence and sports and martial arts and a car accident and just life have made my crosses and uppercuts less effective than they were 20 years ago. I'm at least 20 pounds lighter than I was 20 years ago. I'm at least down 20% (generous) of my testosterone from 20 years ago. My vision (to see danger coming) is worse than it was 20 years ago. My strength isn't what it was 20 years ago. I'm not as fast nor can I run as far as I could 20 years ago. Should I train more. Yep. Should I get in better shape..? Yep. Should I become a hard target? Yep. Should I have insurance for that 1% chance that I get a chance to use it when I need it?

By the time you're in an aggressive confrontation, you're already in a lose-lose situation. The best self-defense is being at the right place at the right time, all the time. Choose to live in a good country, in a good city, in a good neighborhood, in a good job environment, avoid going to bars or any gathering that attracts dumb people, avoid getting drunk, don't be friends with stupid people, learn how to de-escalate arguments and you'll be fine.
