yea when i was on fire dept in a small town winter a majority of our calls were during heavy snow for tree on wires burning all we could do was sit there and babysit it until the power went out or the power company showed up to deal with it we would not even be dumb enough to try to put it out. most times once the breaker on the line tripped and power went out the fire did too

8:25 - yeah, no. That's not a short circuit. That's actually quite the opposite: Iced-over power lines cause the pantograph to lose direct metal-to-metal contact, causing an electric arc to form across the gap. The arc is quite hot, at times hot enough to melt a bit of the metal, which drops down as sparks.
@tookitogo8 күн бұрын
That must absolutely ruin the catenaries, no? Could one maybe have some kind of scraper ahead of the pantograph’s contacts to clear ice first?
@evgenyoms7 күн бұрын
@@tookitogo No, because its not just bare metal to metal contact. its actually metal-to-graphite contact. Trolleybus and trams have special graphite elements in pantographs which replaceable and contacts directly to the wire
@tookitogo7 күн бұрын
@@evgenyoms “No” to which of my two distinct questions? I know it’s a graphite contact. Can you connect the dots and explain why this explains the “no” to the question(s)?
@melkiorwiseman52347 күн бұрын
@@tookitogo I'm guessing that what evgenyoms meant to say is that it doesn't damage the cateneries because the damage is done to the graphite blocks instead, and those are replaceable. I'd guess that the whole reason for using graphite blocks is so that situations like the bus in the video don't cause damage which would require more expensive repairs.
@evgenyoms7 күн бұрын
@@tookitogoEnglish is not my primary language, so i used a google translate: Trolleybuses have graphite inserts that wear out when in contact with the wire. The trolleybus does not stand still, they moves, because of this the wire at the point of contact does not have enough time to heat up and melt. So this sparks does not harm the wire, but it does harm the graphite inserts, which burn out faster than usual. The wire does not deteriorate and serves for many decades. Just believe me, as a person who has lived in Siberia for 30 years. I see all these sparks and light shows every winter morning. No one pays attention to this phenomenon, but it looks beautiful, yes)) The first morning trolleybuses scrape off the frost and ice from the wires and then the movement continues in normal mode.

2:28 - "A blown fuse sounds like a gunshot..." Yes, yes it does. I live in Australia and had an 11kV line fail near my home and blew out two fuses on the step-down transformer on the next pole. It was loud enough to have been heard over 275m/900ft away inside a home, right before the power went out. For those that live in Australia, the 11kV line is the top three lines, also known as the high voltage lines, that sit above the four bottom lines which are the low voltage lines which carry 415volts

28:58 - Yeah, no. "Jacob's ladder" does not refer to such an uncontrolled arc at all. Rather, the term refers to a particular electric device, in which an arc is used in a very controlled manner to dissipate excessive voltage, e.g. from a lightning strike. Even then, the term refers to the device, not the arc. Also, what you refer to as "St. Elmo's Fire" is actually just a mini lightning. Genuine St. Elmo's Fire is a simple steady blue glow. St. Elmo's fire may or may not be accompanied by mini lightnings.

Something like this happened right across the road on a smaller scale. A dead tree fell on a hot wire during hurricane Helene a few weeks ago. The wind was moving the tree and intermittently pushing the hot wire it was leaning on against the next wire. The flashes and sound were quite spectacular. The system shut down after a minute or so of that, but the breakers were reset a few hours later. The tree tip eventually burned through and fell away from the wires. We were happy that's the only problem we had during that storm even though we're not so far away from western North Carolina and eastern Tennessee.
